Mike Huckabee Defends ‘Merry Christmas’ Ad, Says Cross Imagery is Incidental

Border

Dec. 18: The TV ad features former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee in a red sweater in front of what appears to be a white cross and Christmas tree. (Huckabee for President, Inc.)

In a new television ad debuting Tuesday in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee does the unthinkable - he wishes early voters “Merry Christmas.”

Wearing a red sweater and standing before a glowing Christmas tree as “Silent Night” plays in the background, the former Arkansas governor asks viewers if they’re “about worn out of all the television commercials you’ve been seeing, mostly about politics.”

Behind Huckabee appears to be a white cross, which may be intersecting shelf lines or a window pane and slowly moves to the right on the screen until it’s behind his head.

But the ordained Baptist minister, who has been riding a wave of evangelical support with his open religious appeals, said Tuesday that it’s just a bookshelf and defended the ad.

“If we are so politically correct in this country that a person can’t say ‘enough of the nonsense with the political attack ads could we pause for a few days and say Merry Christmas to each other,’ then we’re really, really in trouble as a country,” Huckabee said, speaking in Houston, Texas.

In the ad, Huckabee says, “At this time of year, sometimes it’s nice to pull aside from all of that and remember that what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ.”

“I hope you and your family have a magnificent Christmas season. God bless you and Merry Christmas.”

Catholic League president Bill Donahue said Huckabee went beyond wishing people a joyous holiday. Donahue said he was especially disturbed by the cross-like image created in the background of the ad, saying he believed it was a subliminal message.

“What he’s trying to say to the evangelicals in western Iowa (is): I’m the real thing,” Donahue said Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “Fox and Friends. “You know what, sell yourself on your issues, not on what your religion is.”

Huckabee said the bookshelf is “nothing more than a bookshelf” and shrugged off the controversy: “I will confess this: If you play the spot backwards it says, ‘Paul is dead. Paul is dead.”‘

He was joking about the Beatles’ recording of “The White Album” and the urban legend that if a portion of the album is played backwards, the words “Paul is dead” is heard, a reference to the very much alive Paul McCartney.

Meanwhile, rival Mitt Romney launched a new TV ad yesterday slamming Huckabee, the ex-Arkansas governor, for commuting the sentences of 1,033 criminals - including 12 convicted murderers. “Huckabee granted more clemencies than the previous three governors combined,” says the 30-second Romney attack ad.

“The difference between us is that I did something he never had to do. I carried out the death penalty 16 times, more than any other governor in my state’s history,” Huckabee told reporters in Los Angeles before attending a Beverly Hills fundraiser. “That’s hardly soft on crime when you make that tough decision and actually carry it out.”

Romney’s state of Massachusetts does not have capital punishment.

The Romney-Huckabee spat continued throughout the day Tuesday.

“Interestingly, Mr. Romney has commended President Bush for the pardon of Scooter Libby, yet he brags that he never gave one as governor,” Huckabee said in Houston.

Returning fire in Columbia, S.C., Romney reiterated that Huckabee is “liberal” on crime and immigration.

Asked about the Christmas ad, Romney said, “We recognize the diversity of faith and we unite over our commitment to religious liberty, and I hope Governor Huckabee, like all of us, is supportive to the diversity of faith and the liberty to worship God as they choose, and I trust that he and the other candidates will do just that.”

Not surprisingly, Huckabee sounded Monday as if he wanted to declare a holiday truce among the Republican presidential contenders.

“I think the country could use a little good will and peace on earth a little more than they can some tit for tat in the political arena,” Huckabee said.

FOX News’ Carl Cameron, Serafin Gomez and Shushannah Walshe, and The New York Post and Associated Press contributed to this report.

I thank Mike Hukabee for being true to our christian beliefs and not caving to a few people.
Regardless of your denomination, I believe most Americans are sick and tired of the ACLU and others telling and forcing the people to conform to their mentality.

NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE GOV. HJUCKABEE IS DELIVERING, HOWEVER I ALWAYS GET A CREEPY FEELING WHEN POLITICANS “USE GOD” FOR SELF SERVING PURPOSES.

Go Huckabee! What a guy–I’m definitely going to vote for Mike come next November, and I know a lot of other people who will be too.

Comment by Todd Hubbard

I’m gonna vote for him all the way to White House. He is the man we need!

Comment by Pastor Joe

How refreshing to hear someone say what he feels without being afraid of sounding “politically correct.” Go Mike, you got my vote. Not just because you have a nice commercial, but because you are authentic and real. You give America hope and make me proud to be a Christian and an American. God bless you and have a Merry Christmas as well!

Mike Huckabee seems like a good guy strong values, BUT he will NOT be electable nationally becuase he is running on the fact that he is a Christian. What else does he have to offer us? Strong faith is important, but we also need someone who is going to be able to lead our country, stabalize our economy, and protect us from terrorism. Mitt Romney is a man of faith and integrity, but he also has the experience, knowledge and capability to lead our country towards a brighter future.

Comment by DB

Its amazing how he is being attacked for using the word God and Christmas. Even Fox says he ”does the unthinkable - wished people a merry Christmas’, What has this country come to? Mike is the ONLY REAL person in the race. All the others are two faced slimey sales men (including Hillary).

GO Mike, Kill the IRS!!!!!

Voting for Huckabee next November! I believe you’ll be writing him in.

Huckabee is not a conservative, he is a populist. He wants the federal government to run everything, he wants to force Americans to live the way he wants them to live, and increase taxes since he believes that the federal government is the answer to everything.

He’s Jimmy Carter reincarnated, 32 years later and with a change in political affiliation. I can’t see much difference in Huckabee, Giuliani, Clinton, or Obama, they all want to control the people with the government, or with themselves.

“Give me Liberty of give me death!”

It’s odd to me that Democratic Canadates go in to churches all the time and get to speak.( I thought you would lose your Tax free status for being political) but if a rebublican happes to do something even remotly christian they get jumped on by the media and others.

UH, Mike, Elberton, GA you are TOTTALLY off base. Mike does not want to raise taxes he wants to abolish the IRS, who is robbing the people of their hard earned money. He is the ONLY true conservative. Mitt is a slimy salesman, just look at him he looks like he wants to sell you a used car.

Mike believes in SMALL govt. and he says the govt. should stay out of our lives. You are being feed false info from the media who wants to bury him because he’s not the typical politician that they can put in their pockets. Hes not shoving religion down our throats just because he is a Christian. It amazes me that the dems only argument against him is that he believes in god. WOW…I really hope a dem is not in office next year. The dems want High taxes and BIG govt……help stop that by voting for Mike!!

I feel that Gov. Huckabee really is playing the religion card with this ad. It has taken me some time to admit it, but Huckabee is skirting the issues and deflecting his record by using his religious faith as a smoke screen. I frankly was disappointed with his overtly, “vote for me, I’m a Christian” ad, and I guess what bothers me about it so much, is that in a way, it really is pandering to those of us who are Christians. Even the subtle window/cross in the background was cheesy. I feel like this is a critical time for voters to know where the candidates stand on important issues facing our country. I’m glad that Gov. Huckabee is a Christian, but so is my uncle (who also happens to be a minister). Just because my uncle is a fantastic God loving man of faith, doesn’t necessarily qualify him to be President of the United States. I feel that if Gov. Huckabee had a strong record and platform, he wouldn’t need to resort to the “warm, fuzzy” commercials based solely on emotion, as opposed to concrete information that is pertinent and relevant to show us why he is capable of running the most powerful nation in the world. Also, this ad just reinforces to others who don’t wear the label “Christian” on their sleeves, that Huckabee is still just a Southern Baptist Minister with lots of folksy quotes and Chuck Norris glued to his elbow. I believe voters will have a very hard time seeing him as a representative for ALL Americans as our President. I really believe this ad will do him more harm than good. Especially on a national level. It just reinforces the whole “right-wing evangelical zealot” impression that even I, as a Christian, have begun to feel uncomfortable with. I feel that as a Christian, I am intelligent enough not to be treated as a child. I will study and read a candidate’s platform and make my decision, not just becuase someone wishes me Merry Christmas. I’m glad Romney sticks to issues and doesn’t just try to win a “guilt” vote like Huckabee does because I am a Christian.

FACT: Mike Huckabee supported in-state higher education benefits for children of illegal immigrants.

FACT: Mike Huckabee opposed a federal raid of 119 illegal immigrants at an Arkansas Tyson poultry plant, 107 of whom left the country either voluntarily or through deportation.

Why? Hint: its not the chicken but the special interest corporate money.

FACT: Mike Huckabee opposed a bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote in his own state.

FACT: Mike Huckabee and his administration pushed for legislation to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

I am going to back up DB here. All I ask is for those who “think” they know Mike by watching the slander ads that they follow him instead, watch him, listen, read his website. Really pay attention. I think you’ll change your mind on thinking his BIG govt/tax ways.

Comment by Todd

I think that even I could run for President if all I had to do was wish everyone a merry Christmas! He raised taxes in Arkansas and released murderers. What is his policies? Probably just to wish us all a merry Christmas.

Comment by Rick K.

Fox News this morning had Bill Donahue from the Catholic League organization ripping Huckabee for the Christmas ad. He totally contradicted himself by first talking about how Christmas is under attack and then he’s speaking against the Huckabee’s ad. HUH??

People are claiming that the ad is being used for political advantage. In my opinion, Huckabee was just trying to wish people a Merry Christmas. Besides, he already has the Christian vote. I can’t stand when people decide publicly to critcize someone’s heart.

It turns out that Bill Donahue supports Guiliani. Can all the Catholic Huckabee supporters out there send this Bill Donahue character a letter to stop being so bias and contradictory. And since when is he a speaker for all Christians?

Due to the blatant stance towards Guiliani or Romney and not giving Huckabee a fair share, I’ve found myself turning off the “Fair and Balanced” shows and watching more shows on MSNBC and CNN.

When Huckabee wins the GOP nomination, will FOX continue the insults or stand up for the one TRUE conservative that has not flip-flopped!!

Comment by Randy Richardson

Show me one candidate who does not have something in the closet, anybody.
I don’t think you’ll find one. So what do we do? Pick the lessor of the evils.

Comment by Rebecca Merliss Sieg

I heard on Fox News this morning that the newscaster was asking her guest if he thought Mike Huckabee was pandering to the evangelicals. Frankly,I am offended by that kind of question. The gentlelman with whom the newscaster was speaking said that he was Jewish, and that the mention of Christmas did not bother him. He did say that Huckabee had stepped over the line with that add. Personally I believe even if Mr. Huckabee loses the nomination, I am very proud of him for sharing his Christian beliefs on a national level, which is what all Christians should be about.

Comment by Nathan J.

Why can’t a presidential candidate wish everyone a Merry Christmas without being ridiculed? The people who are upset about it are supporting other candidates and view it as disingenuous. I support Huckabee, but if Mitt or even Hillary wished me a Merry Christmas or Happy Ramadan or Happy Hanuku, ect., it wouldn’t make me mad. We should be able to express our religous beliefs freely. The constitution grants us the “freedom of religion” not the “freedom from being offended.” So if your offended by this add, you chose to be offended.

OK, Steve and Coco have obviously heard the slander add by Mitt ‘the flip-floppying salesman’. But take the time to research these false points and you’ll find mitt is just trying to slander Mike. Why can’t a politician have an ad that wishes everyone a merry Christmas? Why is it considered evil to wish someone a merry Christmas these days? Should he be saying hail satan? Would that satisfy your need to remove all traces of Christianity from the world? Whatever happen to freedom of religion without persecution? The ad was just a holiday ad. Obviously the dems and sadly the mitt fans are going to use it to thrash him……very pathetic. Mitt does NOT stick to the issues as Coco says, he flips on them! Mike NEVER said vote for me cause I’m a Christian. Why do you spin this stuff and take it out of context, when it is simply NOT true. This is why I will vote for Mike because he doesn’t spin and flip flop like all the other candidates, and their supporters.

Steve. Please go to Mike’s website,,,,all of your ‘Facts’ or dispelled as excaudated and out of context ‘Lies’

Comment by sue pak

Too many americans have been forgetting the true meaning of Christmas. It is shocking but great surprising. I feel the country finally tries to make the actualization of the IDEA of Fathers of County.

Comment by Matt Prihoda

This is nonsense! I saw the Huckabee add before FoxNews tried to tell me what to think about it. I didn’t notice “a white cross” or anything overtly religious about it. I thought it was a nice guesture from a man trying to be an ordinary man instead of an ordinary politician. Think about it. Huckabee doesn’t have a whole lot of money. So why spend it on this kind of ad? Because he’s genuinely wanting to wish the people Merry Christmas and spread some good will instead of the typical political garbage.

Fair warning, Fox News. You are rapidly losing your credibilty by Huck-a-bashing. If you want to be Fair and Balanced, return to doing it. If you want to be the mouthpiece of the Republican Establishment, keep up what you’re doing. Mark my words, you will lose audience share. We can see how this is going. The “puff anyone but Huckabee” network is becoming tiresome.
But as for the ad: I don’t need Fox News to tell me how to react to it. I reacted and I suspect the majority of people reacted the same way I did. Here’s my reaction: What a real guy! This is great.

I am a thinking Republican primary voter, and I will approve this Presidential ad myself: by voting for the man who made it.

Comment by Ken H.

I really do not understand why FNC seems openly biased against Huck. He is the best candidate in the race in my opinion. It is not a liability to speak of Christian values in this country.

Comment by Nancy

What is so “unthinkable” about wishing people a Merry Christmas? Joy, Love and Hope to all of every faith.

Comment by Jessica

Wow, so now we can’t even wish each other a Merry Christmas? Who cares if you’re a politician? Christmas is Christmas, regardless. Watch Huckabee in interviews and read his Web site, rather than only listening to what his critics say. I saw him on Larry King Live, and I felt like he genuinely addressed all the questions. No playing dodgeball for him. What a breath of fresh air to find a candidate that actually answers the question that’s asked! My vote goes for Huckabee.

Comment by bb

I don’t agree with all of Mr. Huckabee’s policies, but I am drawn to the fact that he is “for” something as opposed to “against” things. I have always believed that if you don’t have the courage to stand up for your “morals,” the rest really doesn’t make any difference. For those out there that dissagree with me, sorry, but “I like Mike.”

Comment by Mike Teichert

Huckabee is slick. I guess that’s what comes from growing up in Hope Arkansas. His little cross in the background was intentional just like his slip about Romney’s religion. THe more I get to know this guy the more I’m reminded of that other guy from Arkansas.

Comment by Winghunter

The Huckster really went out-of-bounds in this ad. There’s no question he’s manipulating the emotion of the season to gain more religious favor with voters…it will rightfully backlash on him as we are no ones fools.

Anyone who correctly refuses to merely listen to what he’s saying today to research what he has done and said in the very recent past will drop any possible consideration of his run in a flat second.

Two top elected republican officials from Arkansas who know this man well traveled to Iowa to make sure the voters weren’t taken in by the Huckster’s con artist reinventions of himself.

Comment by Winghunter

For those folks stumbling along in blindly suggesting the Huckster is merely wishing everyone a happy x-mas I have only one question;

Where was his commercial last year?? How about an e-mail, postcard??

Please, think about the games that are being played on you.

Comment by Jennifer

I think thats its wonderful that he speaks about the LORD!! Look around us, If people had more faith and love for the LORD, we all know it would be a better place. Just because he has faith dosen’t mean you have to BASH him. Maybe you should think about what you are saying, before you say it, because not only are you bashing him your bashing the LORD. The reason why there is Christmas is because of the LORD and he hasn’t FORGOT that reason. SOME people have values and faith.

Comment by Joseph, Grand Rapids, MI

I want to believe that Huckabee is doing this for the right reasons, but I don’t think he is. On one hand he saids he is not running on religion, but then makes the comment he did to Mitt Romney about his faith, etc. He is trying to appear like the Christian leader, but I think this is going to back fire on him. I am all for living your religion, but sometimes ones testimony of Christ should be in less of what they say and more of what they do. Huckabee wears his faith too much on his sleeve. He is actually creating a divison between republican voters. Lets not forget that States like Utah which have voted for Republicans year after year, and it may not be too wise for Huckabee to affend 75 % of the population in the biggest red state in the union. I just feel like Huckabee may be able to pull off Iowa, but nationally he will lose to the Democrats. Besides when one really takes a close look at Huckabees record it looks a great deal more Blue then red. His surge will fade and I predict he will not get the nomination.

Comment by Pat VanOrden

All this hoohaw about a ‘cross’ behind Huchabee’s head in the commercial! Get real, it’s a bookcase (see the decorative stack of ornaments in the upper left corner), with the tree cleverly placed for the appearance of a cross, without the fact. All the people who seem to be so outraged, are certainly giving Huckabee a ton of publicity for his money!!!!

Any president that will fight to keep the IRS around is corrupted by tax revenues. Mike is fighting for Americans by fighting the IRS. All the spin in the world and attacks on him for believing in God will not change that. Mitt is a slick salesman that will flip flop on anything to make the sale. Do we really need a mega millionaire sales rep representing us and allowing the IRS to continue to rape the people. Mike is a REAL person fighting for real Americans.

Comment by Faye

Great add. The cross is a fact and represents the very footing of our forefathers that founded this country.

Comment by bill malich

Many of my friends and I are very concerned about the future of our democracy. The people in DC who allegedly represent us are more concerned with keeping their jobs and special interest groups. As I see it, we make the target for them very large when too few of us vote. We need a heavy push in November to get out the vote. The target will be quite a bit smaller for these creeps. Fox News, and all of the talk show hosts should get behind this effort.

Comment by bill malich

I receive a lot of mail soliciting money to help battle the ACLU. I have to ask: Why don’t the reps in Washington we elected protect us from an organization that is trying to take down the Boy Scouts, and Christian values, to name just two. The ACLU is an enemy to this democracy.
The dopes in Washington just don’t get it. They are far more concerned about pandereing to special interest groups and hanging on to their jobs than they are about doing work like Immigration, taxes, and social security. We must turn out for the next election and send these prople a message.

Comment by bill malich

Regarding Mike Huckabee - he’s got a lot more guts than any one I’ve seen so far. He certainly has more guts than anyone in Congress.

Comment by A pete

I remember another guy from Hope Arkansas that liked to deny the obvious. Don’t deny your true intentions. Admit to them and be a man of integrity, stand for what you believe in, don’t try to play it both ways. Do we really need another President that can’t seem to tell the truth about his real intentions? Those of us who have eyes to see reality can see He says one thing but does another. Look at Huckabee’s fiscal record, immigration record, and record on crime. Now listen to what he says. Hmmm? Lesson here, don’t drink the water in Hope. Seems to cause people inadvertent lying.

Comment by Pat VanOrden

All this hullabaloo about a ‘cross’ behind Huckabee’s head in the commercial! Get real, it’s bookcase (see the decorative stack of ornaments in the upper left corner), with the tree cleverly placed for the appearance of a cross, without the fact. All the people who seem to be so outraged, are certainly giving Huckabee a ton of publicity for his money!!!

Comment by Dianne Barkey

I think this is absurd, the background is clearly a window frame, I photography studios use these all the time. I had almost this identical background for one of our family portraits. People need to spend more time on real issues and stop this insanity.

Comment by Chris Mark

Huckabee supporters who view this ad as a simple, harmless, Merry Christmas wish to all need to stop drinking so much Evian.

I do not trust Mike Huckabee. My vote is with Mitt or Rudy.

As a Christian myself, I’d rather have a pro-abortion, pro gay rights New Yorker as president than a dishonest pandering opportunist like Mike Huckabee.

Comment by John Lawrence

Mitt Romney is a slick operator, the flippest of the floppers, and a classic opportunist, but Mike Huckabee is a genuine human being who connects with people. People are just liking what he has to say. Reminds me of Reagan who was the but of jokes, but now his is recognized as a pretty significant Presidency. I love the fact that Governor Huckabee has the guts to challenge the “politically correct” crowd. The cross all the paranoids see in the ad pretty much looks like a window pane to me. Such nonsense is beyond the pale. GO MIKE GO!! It is entirely thrilling to see what a solid guy like Mike with a sound record can do, and without any money, by simply connecting with the voters. We’d be proud to have you as our President, Mike! I’m a long time Republican, but I’d never vote for the likes of Romney. And by the way, Merry Christmas!

Comment by Mitchell

Will this guy ever stop with religion? Doesn’t matter that he’s Christian. What’s he going to do on the issues that matter? He’s soft on crime. He raised taxes. He was constantly before the ethics committee. Weak on immigration. Please tell me what this guy offers other than his religious rhetoric. This ad is the latest in his attempts to deflect having to defend his record. If Huckabee is my party’s nominee, it’s going to be a long four years with a Democrat in the White House.

Comment by Patricia Estes

I have watched Fox News for years and have always thought them to be fair and balanced, but in the case of Mike Huckabee it seems as if they are not and seem to be knocking him all the time. His Christmas ad is lovely and he seems to be a true Christian not afraid of all these devils who keep kicking him. He will be getting my vote, and I might just start watching CNN instead of Fox.

Comment by John Wallace

Suddenly a moral conservative who is not beholden to the guardians of corporate greed becomes a viable presidential candidate and the Fox/Drudge crowd is shaking in their boots. This man has nothing in common with “the other guy from Arkansas.” He’s the one that cleaned up Arkansas politics. Of course, the attack surrogates “know” that the cross was intentional. They “know’ it because they invented “slick.”

Comment by Bob Rountree

Mr. Huckabee represents the true America–an America that was founded on God and the principles that have distinguished us for all these years. Look at the countries of the world that have forgotten God and ask yourself a question: Would like to be experiencing their level of decay and hollowness as your standard of living.

Mike Huckabee is the man of the hour to lead America back to its path of true greatness.

Comment by David John

Why would anyone need a subliminal message when the intended message is so clearly on the surface? As to whether this uses religion for political purposes — perhaps, as much as any politician uses his or her region, ideology, appearance, demeanor or any other factor — other than record or policy — to bond with potential supporters. There is no separation of religion and politics in this country. There is no explicit separation of religion and government, but we have adopted one as a convenience. Apparently we have sufficient other bases for dividing ourselves in the political arena.

It is a sad fact that anyone making a public statement must be so careful about every potential meaning a listener might read into it.

Comment by DJ

I totally agree with David on this.

Merry Christmas, Mike. You have my vote and I’d love it if you win. I’m so glad that Mike is proud to say “Merry Christmas” and that he is a Christian, in addition to being a very intelligent person.

Sure Huckabee talks a good talk, but he walks a crooked walk. Listen to what he says, now please will, you Huckabee “believers” LOOK at what he does. It’s all in his record.

Comment by DeAnn

What a big reach to call a window pane a “floating cross”!!! This is getting ridiculous!

Comment by BarbaraMartin

Hurray for Mike Huckabee! I am so glad to hear a politician not caring about being “politically correct,” but rather speaking from his convictions. All of these loud, noisy voices that jump on his case aren’t speaking for the large majority of the American people, but from their own narrow-minded liberal perspective. We Christians need to begin to speak up, and drown out these false purveyors of what is “right or wrong.” We are Americans, and matter too. It’s a wonderful thing to love our Lord, and love our country too!

Comment by Kimbo

It’s a window pane!!!! Quit being so Christophobic.

I wish FOX news and the rest of the conservative media could see that Huckabee is the choice of the grass roots Republicans and get behind him. We are not going to vote for the same ol Billionair Boys club of trhe past. We want a fresh start and Huckabee is it.

Comment by Don C

MERRY CHRISTMAS! I HAVE NOT MADE MY MIND UP AS TO WHO I AM VOTING FOR YET. SINCE THE RECENT UPRISING OF MIKE HUCKABEE I DID GO AND CHECK OUT HIS WEBSITE AND SEE WHAT HE SAYS HE IS RUNNING ON. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU ALL DO THE SAME WITH EACH CANDIDATE, WATCH THE DEBATES, AND LISTEN NOT ONLY TO WHAT THEY SAY BUT HOW THEY SAY IT. ANY INTELLIGENT AMERICAN CAN SEE WHO IS SINCERE AND WHO IS PLAYING TO WHAT HE/SHE THINKS YOU WANT TO HEAR.
NOTICE HOW LIMITED THE “ATTACK ADS” WERE UNTIL THIS GUY “WHO DIDN’T STAND A CHANCE” STARTED BEATING EVERYONE. THAT ALONE SHOULD OPEN SOME EYES!!!

Comment by Don in Harrison TN

I have donated money twice to Huckabee, but I am backing off until we get a real clarification and probably an apology for his “Bunker mentality” remarks about Pres. G.W. Bush. I personally think that the decision to go to war was correct based on intelligence at that time, the surge is working, we haven’t been attacked since 9-11, the economy has done very well (thank you), George & Laura are light years ahead of the Clintons in terms of morality and ethics, etc etc. Huck’s remarks have made me take a closer look at Romney, and I wish that Duncan Hunter was making a better showing!

Comment by Licia Lu

Just a tip for anyone who posts “facts” on here about Mike or any other politician, believing all of the b.s that the media feeds you doesnt make it a fact. you have to do some real research before making a judgement. i agree with the person that said ALLLLLL politicians have some skeleton in their closet, you just have to pick the LESSER OF THE EVILS. Mike has my vote.

Comment by Fred Flintstone

Good for him. What is wrong with wishing people a happy Christmas. What is the deal with the Catholic League guy. Subliminal message!?! Maybe he ought to take a look at the symbol and figure out what it means.

Comment by Hasan

Are you people crazy? The reason that it’s not proper and ‘unthinkable’ to wish people a Merry Christmas is because America is based off of diversity and he should be wishing EVERYONE a happy holiday season, not just Christians. They wouldn’t air this commercial in New York with a heavy Jewish population or Michigan with a heavy Muslim population because he is just trying to connect with the majority Christian population in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. It’s not genuine, it’s a marketing ploy; and to use your religion to gain ground is disrespectful in my opinion.

Comment by Ron

The country IS headed in the wrong direction and the majority are ignored with idiotic feelings that we all might “offend someone”. We get all worked up about this crap. Boo fricken Hoo!

So to all of you out there (who have thick skin and don’t whine about everything) Merry Christmas!

To the rest of you pansies, “Happy Holidays”

Mike Huckabee is going to be our next President. He can offer America true change and can deliver it the same way teddy roosevelt did. By getting the american people behind him. If you truly want change to come to this nation, taxes, foreign policy, domestic agenda, and the end of political correctness (RIGHTSPEAK) then you should get behind Mike Hucakbee. I am a very astute historian of politics and the things that we need to change in this country can only be changed by the american people. Hucakbee is someone who can reach out to the most americans and bring together a strong coalition of support for his ideas. Just remember that we ge the best when we expect the best.

I believe that God is what Christmas is really about. Maybe if people would get their head out of the clouds and think… Christmas is a time when Christ was born. The second thing is the gift of giving to those that are without. I stand firm on this ad. I support Mr. Huckabee in the fact that this nothing more than someone trying to be human and show everyone that. The cross is nothing more than a bookshelf behind him. I believe that God has a way of showing he is around by little miracles. The cross seems to me to be shining, that to me is a sign. To everyone else they think its planned. Only God himself can do this. After seeing this ad I’m a voter. I have really been trying to decide who is the better candidate. I know who I will stand by in this election. “He” meaning God always has my vote and in my mind he has picked Mr. Huckabee to represent the spirit. I believe it is a wonderful ad.

Huckabee is trying to contrast himself against Romney and trying to label himself the “Christian candidate”. It doesn’t paint a very flattering picture of Huckabee or the people who are managing his campaign. Romney hasn’t distinguished himself positively either as earlier in the campaign he stated he would never have a Muslim in his cabinet if elected President. It’s too bad McCain is so old he’s the only one of this bunch that even remotely could have a positive impact on issues that really matter when it comes to running a government.

I think that Huckabee is trying to appear that he is the only REAL Christian. How can one dismiss that he is not. I think he needs to run more on his policies, which I have many questions about, rather than the fact that he is a Christian. Many said Romney did the first attack ad in the campaign. I suggest it was Mike Huckabee by saying that he was the Christian candidate. To say such a thing is to assume that his main competitor in Iowa, Mitt Romney, is not. However, he has never been questioned about that ad. It is not that I dislike Mike, but come on, the American people are smart enough to vote for someone based on the issues, not simply the fact that they were once a baptist minister.

I guess if Mike was just trying to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, I don’t fault him for it. Merry Christmas, Mike. I am a Christian, but I feel uncomfortable with the fact that when I go to Mike Huckabee’s website it appears that most of his ads play the Christian card.

Merry Christmas to you to Mike.

Why is the left framing the Republican debate? The truth is that as Mitt’s numbers went down in Iowa, Mike’s went up. Obviously, there are at least a few people that aren’t racist religious bigots that hate Mormonism supporting Mike considering they supported Romney before they changed their mind. The truth is that Romney is going to lose in Iowa because he was against abortion, before he was for it, before he was against it… conveniently arriving at his political stance 2 years before the primaries…

Also, the total tax burden that Mitt Romney imposed on Massachusett’s was greater in his short term than Huckabee’s 1% increase over 10+ years and despite the fact that after 2001, the tax burden on the states was doubled. Its a miracle that he didn’t have to raise taxes higher than 1% to tell you the truth, and that is why Time named Huckabee one of America’s top Governors, not Romney.

It is nice to a candidate with such good views, most candidates do anything to smear each other on TV. Huckabee is not like that. I feel that he is the right person for the job and i do hope that he can get this country out of the econimic mess it is in. We need the middle class re-established in America. Go Huckabee

Love what Huckabee said…is this country not one founded on
Christ’s teachings and His Word…the Bible! Thank God for
Huckabee’s courage to stand up for what is right and true.
It is either Christ or Chaos! Look around the world if
you do not believe this to be true.

I am so sick of Fox News making a mountain of something that is not even a mole hill. I cannot believe that you made news out of a bookshelf in the back ground calling it a “floating cross”- how ridiculous. I hope you realize that you are perceived as being foolish and making news. I used to love Fox and Friends, but I was sickened and saddened at how this visual Christmas card made by Huckabee was turned into the latest scandalous political story. All of the tv morning hosts turned this into a scandel that did not exist. I am glad he wished me and you a Merry Christmas-thats all it was- get over it and get back to reporting NEWS- real news.

Why can’t a canididate express his or her faith in public? Why do so many misinterpret a very simple Christmas greeting? Everything we say is twisted and understood in so many ways. This is the education we receive from the modern media. This is the education of secular teachings in our schools even at the university level. People, stop digging into to words and twist there meanings. We are like a society living in fear and we are not a communist country. We are living in a real socialist fear and only a very few pushes this agenda in the nation. Please remember, we are a free people, believe what you want, but be real to yourself before we judge others.

The man said Merry Christmas and expressed its meaning to him by faith. If you would like to see Santa at the mall Sunday morning that’s fine. That is your expression of Christmas, please have fun and enjoy that freedom we all enjoy. If you have a Christmas tree as many Christians do, please enjoy it with your family. But don’t rub dirt on a man with just a simple message. It’s all about love, not hate. Merry Christmas.

I was waiting for someone to drop the Hope comparison. But the comparison stops there, Mr. Clinton and Governor Huckabee couldn’t be more different. Good grief, how sad that someone wishing everyone a Merry Christmas is controversial news. It is getting rediculous that people feel that they have to run people down in stead of just disagreeing. Everyone is always looking for a spin. I happen to believe that Mike just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and it should be left at that. Merry Christmas and God Bless us everyone.

Love the commercial, It is the truth, The true meaning of Christmas, ” The birth of Jesus Christ”. Finally, a politician running for President that will stand up and say that. Our country needs Mike. This country was based on value and morals by our ancestors. We need someone to uphold them!!! I am on Mike’s team!!!!!!

Huckabee is nothing but a moderate democrat in sheep’s clothing. Just forget about his religion and look at his record on crime, taxes, spending, ethics and immigration! He is as slick as Bill Clinton, but not half as smart. His Bible college education is fine if he’s running for pastor, but hardly qualifies him to run the largest business in the world, the federal government. We need someone with the skill, education and smarts to stand up to congress and bring the federal government under some semblance of control. Nobody in the race from either party can compare to Mitt Romney on the qualifications that count. AND he’s a good man too, with no hint of personal or public scandal!

Not a fan of Huck’s on the issues, but I think it was an outstanding ad! The Huckabee campaign has run some very good ads lately. I love the one with Chuck Norris!

I was comfortable with G.W. Bush’s faith and the balance I perceived that he placed between not sacrificing his faith, and being the President of a country with religious freedom. I do not feel that same comfort with Mike Huckabee! This ad, while seemingly innocent, is obviously meant to make us Christians feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I’m not going to vote for Huckabee because he tells me Merry Christmas, or has a sly reference to the crucifix in the background. It makes me feel like I’m being pandered to and I do not enjoy it. Huckabee is beginning to step over the line between not sacrificing one’s faith, and selling himself based on his faith. I am conservative, I am Catholic Christian, and I pray that my faith deepens with each day I’m on this earth.

Awesome! In times when so many groups, the media, courts, politicians, etc., seem to be so down on Christians / religion, Mike Huckabee is one of the few politicians who actually have the stomach to still say Merry Christmas! After all, what a Christian does is tout his or her faith, for all the world to see, regardless of the consequences. People like Mr. Donahue, who rather than saying they are proud to be Christian, are a disgrace to the Catholic (Christian) faith. The sheepishness of these people is one of the reasons why Christianity is taking such a bashing these days. However, Mr. Donahue seems to be much in keeping with the direction in which the Catholic church has gone in recent years. Heaven forbid a priest would get up in church and speak what the Bible says about homosexuality, or anything else the Bible considers sinful. I came from a Catholic background, and left the Catholic church because all they ever do is ask for money, and water down the Christian message . The Catholic church, like so many other people, is into political correctness. After all, telling people to live a moral life is offensive to many. THIS is truly whay people are against Christians and the Christian message. People don’t want to be reminded that there is a God who will one day judge them for the things they do now. It’s simpler just to try to squelch that kind of thinking, so they don’t need to think about it themselves. Don’t think about God, or what He commands, and you can live however you please, and answer to nobody but yourself. This country was based on Christianity, and the majority of people are still Christian. This includes Rudy Guiliani, Mitt Romney, Barach Obama, and even Hillary Clinton. There are several of these folks who proclaim to be Christian, yet clearly don’t walk the walk. How many of these folks are pro-choice? How many are for gay rights? These issues are clearly moral driven issues, yet these “Christians” ignore what the Bible tells them is correct, according to God. And these people also say as little as possible about their faith. Why? I’ll tell you why: because they are afraid to do what is madated by their very own religion: tell people you are Chrstian, and bring others to faith. This is anything but a Christian. I have to give it to Mike Huckabee. He claims his Christianity proudly and boldly, even in a time when it is not popular. You think he does not know making such statements could hurt his chances to become the Presidential nominee for the Republicans? Honestly, I think it will help him. After all, I think most Christians, such as myself, are sick and tired of watching our society telling us we can’t say Merry Christmas, have a Christmas display, put up the Ten Commandments in our schools and courthouses, say prayer in school, etc. It is obvious that the chipping away of our Christian based values has led to a clear decline of our overall societal values, and this goes all the way up the chain to our highest levels of government. I would like to see someone with real morals and ethics get elected to the office of the President. I think Mike Huckabee is the real deal, and he will be a formidable opponenent in the race for the Presidential nomination. I’m all for the guy who has his honesty and straight-forward attitude, and speaks with integrity. GO MIKE!
