Clinton, Romney Win Nevada Caucuses

Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney took home wins in the Nevada caucuses Saturday, both racking up a greater number of votes than their opponents combined.

With 98 percent of Democratic precincts reporting, Clinton had 51 percent and Obama had 45 percent. John Edwards had 4 percent.

On the Republican side, with 100 percent of caucus sites reporting, Romney had 51 percent followed by Ron Paul, who made his strongest showing yet with 14 percent. John McCain took in 13 percent, Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson took in 8 percent, Rudy Giuliani took in 4 percent and Duncan Hunter took in 2 percent.

It was not immediately clear what impact the Nevada win would have on Romney’s campaign. Interest was low among the GOP candidates, but Romney made a last-minute push in the state, and in a race with no clear front-runner he’s defended his against-the-grain strategy, saying he could stomach a loss in South Carolina, which voted on the same day. He came in fourth in the first-in-the-South primary.

Romney cast his campaign as a quest for convention delegates, a race that he is currently winning and which relied in part on grabbing a good portion of Nevada’s delegates. He took 17 of the 31 available delegates there, The Associated Press projected.

The former Massachusetts governor was one of the few Republicans with any campaign presence in the state. Paul also aired television ads in Nevada. Romney heard about his victory while on a plane to Florida.

“I’m not looking just to get a couple high-profile victories; I want to get delegates and I want to win this nomination,” he said.

Democrats focused on Nevada much more heavily.

FOX News exit polls showed Clinton won with big leads among female, senior, Hispanic voters and union members in the state. Polls showed 52 percent of women, 61 percent of seniors and 64 percent of Hispanics voted for the New York senator, whose victory in New Hampshire was achieved on the backs of some of the same voting groups.

“We had a great campaign here,” Clinton said after winning Nevada. “And I am particularly gratified that the people of Nevada have given us such a positive send-off. This is one step on a long journey throughout the country …”

Clinton captured the popular vote overall, but Obama appeared to edge her out for national convention delegates at stake, taking 13 to her 12. The state’s Democratic Party released a statement later saying those delegate counts could change as national convention delegates have not yet been directly awarded.

“Just like in Iowa what was awarded today were delegates to the County Convention. No national convention delegates were awarded. The calculations of national convention delegates being circulated are based upon an assumption that delegate preferences will remain the same between now and April 2008. We look forward to our county and state conventions where we will choose the delegates for the nominee that Nevadans support,” said party chairwoman Jill Derby.

Obama won the lead-off Iowa caucuses Jan. 3, and Clinton followed that with a victory on Jan. 8 in New Hampshire. The Democratic candidates next face off in South Carolina, where polls show Obama has an edge ahead of the state’s Jan. 26 primary.

Seeing a tight race, the Democratic Nevada campaign had heated up in recent days. Accusations of dirty tricks flew on all sides, and Obama’s rivals stepped up criticism of him for questionable tactics allegedly being carried out by his union supporters.

Bill Clinton repeated charges Saturday that Obama’s supporters — which include the powerful Culinary Workers Union — were using voter intimidation to rack up pledges for the Illinois senator.

Clinton told FOX News that eight caucus-goers he knows of on The Strip were told they could only register for Obama. He said only when he intervened were they allowed to caucus for Hillary Clinton.

“I think all the votes should count the same,” the former president said, decrying the caucus rules that were in place Saturday.

A recent federal court decision permitted nine at-large caucus sites for hotel and casino workers on the Las Vegas Strip — immediately following the decision a union supporting Obama began running a Spanish-language radio ad blasting Clinton’s supporters for backing the lawsuit that tried to block the caucus sites. The Clinton campaign hammered Obama for not denouncing the radio ads. Edwards did the same.

The Clinton campaign issued a lengthy statement Saturday afternoon saying it “won a huge victory by overcoming institutional hurdles and one of the worst negative ads in recent memory … our campaign also received numerous reports of strong-arm tactics designed to discourage our voters from caucusing.”

The Obama campaign circulated a memo ahead of the Nevada returns saying a win there would be a “significant upset,” and claiming the allegations of voter suppression were “outrageous.”

“The conduct of the Clinton campaign in recent weeks essentially makes the case for why we need Barack Obama — it’s the same old-style say anything or do anything to win, divisive attacks that have prevented progress in this country for so long,” the memo said.

Obama’s camp also said its backers were receiving telephone calls that made repeated reference to “Barack Hussein Obama.” And the campaign claimed more than 200 separate incidents of “trouble” at caucus sites, where allegedly doors were closed up to 30 minutes early and registration forms ran out so that people were turned away. More than 114,000 voters were estimated to have caucused to choose the roughly 10,000 delegates to the state convention.

Having finished a distant third, Edwards pledged to stay in the race.

“This is one of those times that I hope the old saying ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’ turns out to be true. We’ll find out,” he said in Greenville, S.C. “”I am not finished with this fight. I am dead in it.”

Republican caucus-goers were much fewer, with roughly 35,000 voters meeting. Many of the voters said they were most concerned about the economy. Much as he did in Michigan, which he also won, Romney campaigned on the economy in Nevada. A day after President Bush called for a stimulus package worth up to $150 billion, Romney issued a plan of his own calling for $230 billion in tax cuts — it included a reduction in the lowest income tax bracket, tax cuts for working seniors and tax-free savings for the middle class.

The campaign released a statement Saturday claiming the Nevada win helps solidify his status as a change candidate.

“Today, the people of Nevada voted for change in Washington. For far too long, our leaders have promised to take the action necessary to build a stronger America, and still the people of Nevada and all across this country are waiting. Whether it is reforming health care, making America energy independent or securing the border, the American people have been promised much and are now ready for change,” he said.

Though earlier polls showed Romney had only a moderate lead going into Nevada, exit polls showed Mormons also contributed to Romney’s landslide.

Romney is a Mormon, and about one-quarter of Nevada voters share his faith. Exit polls showed nearly all Mormons voted for Romney in Saturday’s caucuses.

Campaigning in Columbia, S.C., Thompson teased Romney when he heard the news of his Nevada victory.

“Imagine that! Glad he could pull one out,” Thompson said.

FOX News’ Steve Brown, Aaron Bruns and Shushannah Walshe and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Word coming out from Nevada, is that Hispanic voters would not vote for an African American candidate, in this case, Sen. Obama. This may confirm, the utterances we, in the African American community often hear from the hispanics. If this turns out to be true, it is rather unfortunate that, that community is lacking in basic objectivity, but rather rely on premodial sentiments, when casting their votes.

If exist poll confirms this, we in the African American community should take note, and make sure we repay the hispanic community in its own coins. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander. When a hispanic candidate runs for office against a white candidate, or candidate from another ethnic group, we should support the other candidate against the hispanic. They would need us, more than we need them. Alot of hispanics are illegals in the US, and they would at sometime, approach blacl elected officials for support on favorable immigration reform legislation, and other legislation on farm workers. Let us make sure, we deny them such support.

If they cannot afford to give us fair consideration, it would be foolish, very foolish for the do-gooders and apollogists in the African American community to keep giving their votes away. African American voters, should take note. How can we go on treating them fairly and favorable, and every bloody opporunity hispanics get they use it to screwed blacks, hard. Whenever, a Hispanic candidate is running for elective office, we should repay them in their own coins.

Maybe the syrian fundraiser being prosecuted , who gave Obama a sweetheart deal for his property and raised money for him, can be secretary of state. It is time the media exposes this guy Obama for what he is. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it is a duck. The duck being a racist with muslim affiliation. Don’t believe me, just google the rev. jeremiah wright and louis farrahkan. The republicans will destroy Obama in a general election and I will be voting with them .

Well, word is that Hillary Clinton has won the Nevada Primary, thanks in most part, to Hispanics, who vowed, they would not vote for a Black candidate, in this case, Sen. Obama, even, before they caucus!!

Blacks should take note. How can we go on treating these hispanics fairly, supporting their causes and candidates in electionS, yet, whenever they get opportunity, they screw us, and tell us to go to hell. That was the sentiment of most of them in Nevada, when the Culinary workers union decided to support Sen. Obama. It is unfortunate for them, because, it is either they are lacking in objectivity and political intelligence, and instead, rely on premodial sentiment, or both. Either way, that is unfortunate for them. They are the group with millions of illegals in the US, and they seek immigration reform and favorable farm and undocumented works’ immigration policy. Not if we in the black community have a say in that. Let’s see them get their issues in these areas. WE WILL REMEMBER THEIR WORDS IN NEVADA IN 2008. The do-gooders and apollogists in the African American community should take note.

Let us bear this in

Hillary Clinton will take this country where it needs to be. For 8 years now we’ve been heading in a direction where jobs are scarce, people are losing homes, and people can’t even afford to go to the doctor. What I think is sad is that people, men usually, can’t seem to put their ego aside and vote for a woman. Everyone knows that Hillary helped former President Bill Clinton A LOT

Maybe if and i hope maybe! if Mrs Clinton ends up as president the next generation who now crave that futour and will prevail and Obama will rightly be in place he deserves to be in the White House !!!!!

Obama has been constantly attacked by the aggressive Hillary/Bill tagteam. When they thought that Hillary was the defacto Democrat nominee nothing was said, but when Obama won Iowa the attack dogs were unleashed, and the mudfight began. Im right with you Warren, I cant beleive the number of people who are voting for HRC, based on association with Bill, or her alleged ”Career in politics”. Shure, her husband has been quite the politician, but when , prior to her post in congress, did She herself hold office???
Anyhow, the only real Dem anyone should vote for is John, and the distance the press is keepin from him should make the reality of his campaign that much morer real. The big dollar press, and big dollar washington are in bed together, and they want their big dollar candidate in the house next year.
John Edwards has denounced big money for Four years, has been one of the few candidates who has said anything about change of policy in Washington to BAR lobbyist’s and all the ‘Special” favor they command out of Washington.
An old republican friend of mine once said ” keep big money happy, and everyone will be happy” so far , it looks like big money cant get happy enough, and it just keeps costing little money (average America) the most.

I think the Clintons are very dishonest to claim that voters were made to vote for Barack. They implied the unions had forces the voters to support Barack when it just wasn’t true. We didn’t hear these claims before the union endored Barack. It wouldn’t have bee an issue if she had got the nod from the union.

I voted for Bill Clinton, but he isn’t running for office, and seeing the kinds of dirty tricks they like to pull I don’t think I would vote for him now. You learn a lot about people when they feel threatened. I learned the Clinton’s are willing to act like Republians, and do what every they feel they need to do, right or wrong to farther their own ends. I always thought people would see through the Clinton’s game but clearly that haven’t.

Bill Clinton isn’t running for office, and voting for Hillary isn’t a vote for Bill. I’m a Dem, and Iwould vote for the GOP before I cast a vote for Hillary Clinton, Bill or not. America needs to wake up. The low and middle class needs to wake up, the Spanish community needs to wake up. How can a rich white woman who has been a part of the problem in this country truely relate to the issue and the needs of every day people.

We need change in this country more now then ever. Change doesn’t come easy, it doesn’t come free. The old establishment (Hillary and the Republicans) will claim to want change, but they don’t. Thay only started talking about change after Barack. A vote for Hillary is a vote for the same old same old in Washington. If you don’t want to vote for Barack, vote for John Edwards, vote for John Mc Cain, vote for anyone but Hillary Clinton.

She didn’t have the guts to deal with her unfaithful husband and she will never have the guts to deal with our enemies. Please tell me the women in this country have more sense than to vote for this puppet on a string!

Comment by Mike

When are the women, hispanic, and old people going to realize Hillary sucks. She has the worst chance against a top republican in the general election. Do her supporters even know her policies or just like her cause they think she has the most experience or because she is a woman. I think she will be bad for her country if she wins. Her ideas suck. She had the worst economic plan out of all the candidates. She switches up her position on issues too much. She is way too divisive and won’t fix Washington this way. This list goes on and on. Wake up Hillary supporters. She isn’t Bill, and has the same experience as Obama. My problem with her is she is a liar, and will say anything to win votes. Her campaign plays dirty politics. Vote Obama or if she wins the moniation, vote republican please.

Comment by Summa

Hillary Clinton is shameless. She and Bill have used the most underlying and demeaning tactics that they have often accused the GOP of being famous for. I supported Bill Clinton is his bid for presidency. I am a staunch supporter of Senator Barack Obama. No matter the outcome. At the end of the day. If she was the last candidate standing. I would never support Hillary not even in a dog race. She lacks integrity and morale, and I believe that Bill really does not want to see his wife in the White House what else could possibly encourage him to stoop to an all time low.

Comment by Mike

Rick1, Clinton is one of those criminals in the white house. She tries too hard to look strong which isn’t a good image for her. She comes off controlling and only cried because she was afraid of losing her legacy of becoming president. That is very selfish in my eyes. Obama seems to care about people more than her. She speaks to these different races and tries to push issues in their community, but it’s all politics, and she won’t do anything when it comes down to it. I don’t think her win gives her a bounce at all. She was projected to win, and didn’t win by a significant lead. Obama will win in SC, you can’t count him out. Edwards is only a spoiler and should just get out of the race. He would help Obama because his supporters hate Hillary. She is not a likeable person period.

Comment by fred

So with Hillary in the White House the whole country will turn itself right around. We will no longer see any corruption in the White House as well. I mean she is the only capable candidate out there right? Also the Clinton’s are such fine upstanding people. What a bunch of bull. Just because they are unable to convict you doesn’t make you any less of a crook. I have known since Hillary came to NY that her plans were to run for President. She was just waiting for her opportunity. Her goal before leaving the White House was to find a Democratic stronghold, establish herself in a political office, and then run for President. As far as the economy goes, I believe that the economic policies of the previous administrations have an effect on the present administration to this day. While we had ‘great prosperity’ when Bill was in office, what he left was a mess. So we want to return to that. Sure the economy was great, but the Tech sector was in a bubble which burst in 2001. From which we have yet to recover.

Comment by Elia Armacanqui

It is ashamed how people vote without conviction. Hillary is the spokeswoman of the corporations and the Washington establishment. She does not represent ordinary people like you or me. Please open your eyes. Where is your critical thinking? Did you forget the flip flap lady? She changed her mind many times according to her convenience. For instance, when the N.Y. Major suggested granting drivers ID’s to undocumented people, Hillary supported at first. However, when conservatives were outraged of course, Hillary changed her mind, as usual, and opposed the Major’s idea. Aren’t we the pedestrian have the right to have drives with the proper ID’s and car insurance?

Obama is the man of conviction, honesty. and leadership. Vote Obama!!!! and we will have an intelligent and right person in the White House. We really need a true change in the White House. Hillary is as experience as Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush. Are you ready to vote for any of them for a president? I am Latina and I want a CHANGE in Washington politics.

Hilary’s Experience

Lets start at the beginning. Hillary headed the Young Republicans at Wellesley College and was a self described Goldwater girl. For those who don’t remember, Senator Goldwater was one of only six Republican Senators who joined Southern Democratic segregationists opposing the historic voting rights act of 1964 inspired by Martin Luther King.

Wal-Mart

Hillary Clinton served on Wal-Mart’s board of directors for six years when her husband was governor of Arkansas. Also, the infamous Rose Law Firm where she was a partner handled many of the company’s legal affairs.

Hillary Clinton was paid $1,500 for each Wal-Mart meeting she attended and accumulated at least $100,000 in Wal-Mart stock, according to Clinton’s past federal financial disclosure forms.

Hillary Clinton had kind words for Wal-Mart as recently as 2004, when she told an audience at the convention of the National Retail Federation that her time on the board “was a great experience in every respect.”
Of course Hilary Clinton now claim she used her position to urge the company to improve its gender and racial diversity, but neither she nor Wal-Mart will release minutes of the company’s board meetings during her tenure.

“There’s no evidence she did anything to improve the status of women or make it a very different place in ways Mrs. Clinton’s Democratic base would care about,” said Liza Featherstone, author of “Selling Women Short: The Landmark Battle for Worker’s Rights at Wal-Mart.”

Hillary Clinton takes credit for the Bill Clinton Administration’s accomplishments when touting her experience advantage over her rival Obama.

OK, lets list the important ones that had long lasting affects:

N.A.F.T.A. and the W.T.O. - Clinton championed and passed these disastrous trade deals that have destroyed our middle class and sent our good paying blue-collar jobs away.

H1B Visa. - Clinton championed this program that allowed U.S. corporations to import high skilled foreign workers to replace American people for a fraction of the pay. Clinton allowed in hundreds of thousands of these replacement workers to the great benefit of a few superrich contributors.

Ballistic Missile Technology to China. – Clinton reversed the ban the State Department had imposed on the transfer of this dangerous technology, signing a waiver to allow just one company to do it. The Loral Corporation. Coincidentally that company is run by CEO Bernard Schwartz who had been the biggest contributor to Bill Clintons reelection campaign.

I won’t mention any of the ridiculous scandals that also plagued the last Clinton Administration. The Clintons directly led to the Republican takeovers of the Presidency and both Houses of Congress with their shenanigans.

Hillary has Terry McAuliffe running her campaign. This is the sleazy guy who walked away with several MILLION DOLLARS of UNION PENSION MONEY. Court documents show McAuliffe put up only $100 for the purchase, while the IBEW pension fund put up $39 million. McAuliffe received a generous 50% stake in the partnership and emerged with $2.45 million from his original $100 investment. The pension fund lost money.

McAuliffe also ended up with several million dollars from the Global Crossing fiasco that left thousands of honest peoples life savings gone.

As I tell my children, “you can tell a lot about a person by the people they associate with.”

The Clinton’s take credit for the economy of the late 1990s. That was of course because of the Internet boom that started in 1995 and went bust in 2000. We all made a ton of money. Everybody paid income tax on that money. That influx to the treasury also led to an income bubble for the Government. At least on paper, we had a short-term balanced budget. BIG DEAL!! That was a fluke the Clintons had nothing to do with.

The Clinton’s have proven to be a disaster for working people because of their policies.

This workingman believes its time for change, not a return to past failures!!!!

If Clinton is the nominee, I will vote Republican or third party. There is no way I am supporting a campaign which allows such reprehensible behavior from it’s supporters, volunteers and workers!!!!

Once a Democrat states that illegal aliens WILL NOT GET Amnesty, will I choose one. Until then, I’m looking at Republicans, even though I do not care for their pandering to the religious right.

I hate that everyone seems to be on different sides of the race race. But I do see alot of black support for Obama, and it just seems prejudiced in a way. Like that person above that said the hispanics should have helped out the minority candidate, that is semi reverse racism. I am for Hillary. She has earned the support of blacks, whites, men, women, hispanics. Some may vote for her because she is a woman, but because she is a qualified woman, not just a woman. I think that when the real mud slinging comes out in the election, Obama, who I like and respect, would get knocked down due to his inexperience and past experiences. Hillary has already been through all that. They cannot say anything we do not already know. I think that if Hillary doesn’t choose Bill Richardson for her VP, then she could choose Obama. He is a great speaker who can earn his right for the presidency along with his experience. The democrats could then control the White House, and help the Supreme Court not become too right wing for the next 16 years. Obama has a great chance in the future, but Hillary is the real choice if you want the democrats to win.

Second in Nevada. That’s not too bad. Who you gonna call? RON BUSTERS! Maybe I’ll get a chance to be covered on Fox News now.

Have been watching the nevada caucus off and on all day….The fox news announcers seem to skip right over Ron Paul even though he is tied or beating Mccain? They skip right over him and start speaking about Mccain and Thompson………………….odd.

I am sad that HRC won NV. I was hoping it was the end for her. I support Obama and Edwards and find her politics to be less than honest; an understatement. What I find interesting is that voters do not consider her antics to be outrageous. Has the public become that numb? Why do dirty tricks always prevail? Anyone care to explain…?

Hillary only got a few thousand votes, and how many million live in Nevada? Embarrassing for the Democrats.

Ron Paul is in 2nd with more 97% in. More votes than Gulianni and Huckabee combined. How can it be? He’s not even in the Council of foreign Relations, or on FOX News!

Craig, It’s fox news. at one time like in 2007 my home page was set at fox news, but now that I know they skip news, I don’t trust them anymore like I did. Skiping over Ron Paul is wrong.

To all you Kool-Aid drinkers, let Ronald Reagan be our teacher. We need to go back to our Constitutional heritage. No more socialist ideals, just plain ol’ free market capitalism is the answer. Go Mitt!

What is wrong with Republicans supporting McCain who has been in Washington for what, 18 years ??? and not done a damn thing to solve America’s problems and he is determined to give illegals visa’s, greencards or citizenship. I came here legally and there are millions of skilled, tax paying, non criminal people waiting in line to get here legally. McCain is a phoney. The only candidate who must be in the oval office is Mitt Romney who will actually fix the things that McCain and others cannot and will not. Where’s the funded fence McCain ??? You do NOT have a good record of achievement so stop decieving everyone.

As a relative newcomer to Utah, having lived much of my life in Ohio and Maryland, I saw Mitt Romney in action during the 2002 Winter Olympics. He gathered an excellent team around him, encouraged volunteerism in a most inclusive and outreaching manner, and persuaded business leaders, government leaders and individuals to contribute in a way that was truly electric. He has a way of lifting people and encourages them to be the best that they can be. He gets people to work together in ways that are collaborative and results oriented. The whole Olympics worked smoothly and beautifully, and almost everyone involved would love to do it again. I think that we need this guy to break down the adversarial barriers that exist in Washington. I personally would rather have a leader who can learn and grow, listen to others and gather information before making decisions, and be willing to admit it when he is wrong, than a guy who is stubborn and entrenched. We need what Romney brings to the table, especially with the economy, which in case you haven’t noticed, is in a mess. I think that the Mormons voted for him because most of them agree with his politics. There is also another popular Mormon Democrat in Nevada, and we all know who he is, that most Mormons would not vote for. Thank You Michigan and Nevada, you got it right.

Let’s elect someone with competance this time
Mitt Romney turns around U.S. businesses for a living and he does it better than anyone. The dollar is falling, our home values are plumeting, the Economy is in Recession and headed down fast.
Mitt will put the Interest and Saving Tax rate at ZERO
He will not tax us by giving AMNESTY to 12 Million people who are here by breaking our laws.
He will CUT out unneeded SPENDING in WASHINGTON and balance the budget so you kids will not have to have a backpack to carry dollar bills to the store to buy PopTarts.
He will INCREASE our MILITARY so we can be SAFER in an already UNSAFE WORLD
lastly, he is a man of integrity, no drugs, no scandals, 37 years faithful and married to his wife Ann, 5 Sons who love and support their DAD, Someone who we will not have to worry about embarrassing us while in the Oval Office!
A Patriot, who represented ALL Americans with honor while leading and running our OLympic Games in Salt Lake City.

LET’S ELECT SOMEONE COMPETANT THIS TIME-LET’S ELECT MITT ROMNEY!!

Ron Paul has repeatedly out-scored Thomson and Giuliani as well as McCain yet Fox continues to ignore him and his campain.

If concervative radio, t.v., and internet blogs continue to ignore the only true conservative (Paul), they are going to be unpleasantly suprised in November!

Comment by Taylor

I’m surprised at the number of Ron Paul supporters posting today. I thought they had all turned tail on Fox News when RP wasn’t included in the debates. Short memories?

Comment by Marti

It has been soooo hard for all reporters, but Hannity, to give Mitt Romney any credit or time. Why? You mostly say that he is so rich, is this something to be ashamed of? He has also received lots of money from the ‘common folks’! He has also received more votes that any other GOP! Please be ‘fair and balanced’ more than you have!! Hope you do.

John, I think you’re watching too many Romney attack ads. John McCain doesn’t support amnesty, and he never has. But, you know who did support amnesty? Ronald Reagan. So back off the Mac, buddy.
