Strange Whisper Before Romney Answer Perplexes Debate Viewers
Forget Dennis Kucinich’s claims about seeing UFOs. The new unsolved mystery of the campaign trail is the “whisper.”
The blogosphere was abuzz Friday morning over an audible whisper that cut through the mix during the GOP presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla., the night before.
It’s unclear who it was, but the voice could be heard after moderator Tim Russert asked Mitt Romney whether, as a fan of Ronald Reagan, he would “do for Social Security what Ronald Reagan did in 1983.”
Right before Romney answered, somebody seemed to whisper: “He raised taxes.”
And then Romney responded, as if taking the cue, “I’m not going to raise taxes.”
So where did the whisper come from?
A fellow candidate? A techie? An earpiece? Brian Williams? (Williams was also moderating.)
The former Massachusetts governor didn’t appear to be wearing any kind of wire or earpiece - but bloggers and those who comment on their Web sites are scratching their heads over where the voice came from.
Web site The Raw Story wrote in a brief article about the incident Friday that some are accusing Romney of “shenanigans” - like waiting for a prompt before answering the question.
The Romney campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment from FOX News.
Jeremy Gaines, a spokesman for debate sponsor MSNBC, said in an e-mail to FOXNews.com, “We heard the same thing you heard. There was obviously an open mike which picked up the whisper, but we have no way of knowing who did the whispering.”
The whispers about the whisper are reminiscent of the Internet speculation in 2004 over whether George W. Bush was wearing a wire during a debate, after photos showed what appeared to be an unusual bulge on his back.
Bush denied he was getting a feed from his aides, and laughed off the rumors.

Good try! An extremely successful CEO and consultant can’t answer questions for himself? NOT LIKELY!
My guess is that someone else on the stage whispered that and Romney responded because he heard it and figured the viewers had also heard it and he didn’t want someone else putting words in his mouth.
The funny thing is this isn’t very funny. Ive listened to various clips on you tube and the actual video of the event and if you listen very carefully you can here what Romney says next, right after “I’m not going to raise taxes” He says “what I’m gong to do is” is also what the mysterious voice seems to say. If there is a professional out there that can isolate that EXTRA voice then maybe we can get some answers.
Why do you even report stuff like this? Are you a news organization or the National Enquirer?
Ok now youre reporting on what the conspiracy bloggers are saying?
Maybe you should go back to the “Republican candidate X is in 3rd and cant win” articles.
Why not just go ahead and endorse McCain. I mean you report and we decide.
Why is Clintons face so RED and his hands so lily WHITE? in the video sitting behind the speaker. ?? Make up ?
Maybe you could do an article on how Ron Paul thinks 9/11 was an inside job.
I mean now youre reporting on what the bloggers are saying.
Maybe you should go back to the “Republican candidate X is in 3rd and can’t win” articles.
This is garbage Im never clicking these stupid campaign updates again.
Why not just go out and endorse McCain. I mean you report and we decide right.
Wow - another media stunt to smear Romney. All of the negativism by the media (especially the left media) should be taken as an obvious tactic to try and get rid of the best (right) conservative candidate. “Never take advice from the enemy”. ROMNEY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even if he was taking feeds, who cares? It’s not like he won’t have aides and advisors when he’s president.
BORING.
Isn’t it interesting that all people can come up with is strange whispers to try to come up with anything to derail Mitt Romney…
