Democrats Warn of Coming ‘Train Wreck’ as GOP Moves Closer to a Nominee

With John McCain closer than ever to being the Republican candidate for president, Democratic leaders are sounding the alarms about a worst-case scenario in which their party has no apparent nominee until the national convention in late August, leaving them with just over two months to mount a general election campaign.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, speaking on the floor of the Senate, warned Friday that it would be a “train wreck” for the party if Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton cannot break their deadlock soon.

“Here is the coming train wreck,” Nelson said. “If one of our two leading candidates does not get a majority by the time that all the primaries and caucuses are over … then we go into a period during June, July and all the way to the end of August at the National Democratic Convention, a period of enormous uncertainty and turmoil.”

He said part of the turmoil would be the backroom deal-making of “superdelegates” — elected officials and other party leaders who come to the convention uncommitted to any candidate — and the fact that Florida’s and Michigan’s delegates will not be seated at the convention. Those two states were stripped of their delegates for holding primaries before Super Tuesday, in violation of party rules.

Clinton won the primaries in both states, and seating their delegations would benefit her.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has said he fears an intra-party showdown at the convention in Denver. Dean, who calls McCain a “media darling,” has warned about the party having no presumptive nominee going into the convention.

He recently told a New York TV station, “The idea that we can afford to have a big fight at the convention and then win the race in the next eight weeks, I think, is not a good scenario … I think we will have a nominee sometime in the middle of March or April. But if we don’t, then we’re going to have to get the candidates together and make some kind of an arrangement.”

He didn’t say what that arrangement would be.

The Associated Press reported that DNC member Debbie Dingell said the national committee is asking Florida and Michigan to consider holding caucuses — but Nelson, who has endorsed Clinton, said “you can’t undo an election with caucuses.”

Three days after Super Tuesday, delegate tallies by The Associated Press show Clinton with 1,045 delegates and Obama with 960. A candidate needs 2,025 delegates to clinch the nomination; both candidates are about halfway there.

McCain needs only a few hundred more delegates to guarantee victory; Mitt Romney’s exit from the race on Thursday left McCain as the odds-on nominee, although Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are still officially running for the GOP nomination.

Republicans who have clashed with McCain in the past have begun to accept his candidacy, even though some conservatives — like Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, who endorsed Mike Huckabee Thursday night — say McCain and his moderate positions will never be palatable to the right.

And McCain has already started his general election campaign, focusing on Obama’s and Clinton’s positions on Iraq and taking them on in tandem as a singular threat to conservatives.

He continued his assault on the candidates Friday, after speaking at a national security round-table in Norfolk ahead of Virginia’s primary Feb. 12.

“All I can say is that they want to set a date for withdrawal,” McCain said. “There would be catastrophic consequences … There is a fundamental misunderstanding on the part of both of them as to what’s at stake and a failure to recognize that our strategy under General Petraeus, called the surge, has been succeeding. That, I think, will be a major issue in this campaign.”

Obama and Clinton have tried to return fire — Clinton complained yesterday about his economic and military policies — but their quest for delegates keeps them focused on each other.

This leaves McCain in the enviable role of statesman, senator and party figurehead, observers say, unshackled from the once-consuming battle among a dizzying field of Republican candidates.

Democratic pollster Doug Schoen told FOX News, “With John McCain the Republican nominee, if he can get the right in line with his candidacy, and the Democrats remain divided, it’ll make a Democratic victory more unlikely in November.”

McCain’s National Finance Co-Chairman Fred Malek said McCain will now be able to show leadership on Capitol Hill, and not just the campaign trail.

“While Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are out on the campaign trail kind of fighting each other on things, John McCain can be back in the Senate leading the charge on issues that are really important to the American people.”

Despite tasting victory, McCain said he will not discount Huckabee, who said Friday that it’s not a lock for the Arizona senator.

“An election is about a choice, not a coronation,” Huckabee said in Kansas.

McCain fended off discussion of potential running mates, as rumors continue to swirl that Huckabee could be a contender.

“Governor Huckabee is still in this race and he is a viable candidate and I am sure will continue to show strength,” McCain said in Norfolk.

FOX News’ Mike Majchrowitz and Mosheh Oinounou contributed to this report.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that DNC Chairman Howard Dean suggested Michigan and Florida hold caucuses in order to seat their delegates at the convention. That is incorrect. We regret the error.

Hillary Clinton should win the election for president! Good Luck Hillary!!!

While I understand the desire for Florida and Michigan to regain their delegates, the decision has been made and changing it now only causes problems. If they were to be seated, the vast majority of delegates would go to Clinton. The problem is that the elections in each of those states might have been a lot different if candidates had actually campaigned. At this point, we should just move forward and adjust for next time.

Don’t worry, a McCain nomination is a guarantee win for the Dem’s. No one wants a 100 year war and the possibility of the draft.

Comment by Chris

Florida and Michican should not be allowed to decide the primary …This would not be fair to Obama since he was not allowed to hold Rallys there …Clinton did sneak a visit there for a supposed fund raiser…..So to let these states have a say will only make people mad and vote republican….

Comment by margaret talbot

All delegates from ALL States should be seated..
This is the votes from the PEOPLE…
Not the so called Super Delegates…

People vote and that is what should be counted…

Once again we will see that the Liberal Democrats can’t work with each other let alone be bipartisan and work with the Republicans. Romney did the right thing. To bad for the liberals Hillary won’t get out. She will eventually beat Obama, but won’t have enough time or money left to beat McCain. Conservatives may not like McCain, but they hate the Clintons enough to overlook their disagreements with MCCain. Obama has abetter chance of beating MCCain. This should be entertaining!

the only train wreck would be if obama or hillary are elected president.

Here is the solution. Democrats vote for McCain in November! Problem solved.

Comment by Ed Strinko

The DNC Punishment of the democrats of Michigan and Florida was unfair and wrongheaded. A brokered convention is not such a bad happening if handled correctly. I propose seating all Florida and Michigan delegates as uncommited. Super delegates and uncommited delegates would have no vote on the first ballot. Each candidate could be nominated, make speaches and campaign. Most likely the candidate would be selected on the second ballot and it would be a fairer process than any other.

Comment by D E

You are wrong Patrick. There will not be a draft and no one wants the most honorabel of young people today, to be there or have died in vain. McCain is our next president. Deal with it. Huckabee people, you are causing a longer war, Hucks needs to get out.

Oh for petes sake Jeffery. Grow up. If we have to be there so what? Why don’t you cry about us still being in Germany, Korea etc.
Just because we want to quit dose’nt mean the enemy does. Would you rather have us wagging a finger at them begging them not to attack us? Yeh, right. Didn’t work for Bill.
Look at history. We have always been at war. War is normal. Peace is an accident. It’s the nature of man since the beginning of mankind.

Don’t fool yourself Jeffrey. Republicans will do anything they can to see Clinton and Obama lose. And while no one wants a 100 year war, there are millions who approve of the war… the media just doesn’t give them air time. As far as the draft… freedom is not free.

The Dems are spinning their wheels if they honestly think there could ever be a majority for either candidate.

I guess they’ve never heard of the truism that ‘A house divided cannot stand’.

Those two candidates have egos too large to ever consider the other as a running mate for Prez & Veep.

Pass the popcorn. The fall of the House of Dems is near.

Comment by Russty

If McCain sees Huckabee as a “viable” candidate, why can’t anyone else?

It is NOT a matter of McCain getting enough votes by the convention, it is a matter of STOPPING him from getting 1191 delegates. Once to the convention the conservatives will have to choose. Huck or McCain. It will be interesting, but the Dem’s will have VERY LITTLE ammo on Huck. With Romney’s 270+/- delegates that could go either way they could toss the election.

If all 50 states had their primaries on the same day, we wouldnt be running into this problem. Besides its not fair to states that hold primaries later on like in May. The candidate would be the nominee before those states even vote. I never like that because everyones voice isnt heard. The primary election can be held the same way the general election is held. Give each candidate 5 months to make their case to the America people why they should be the nominee and then have a national voting primary day…..Its less confusing and everyone would have their say in the election. Thats the democratic way!

It all boils down to a choice. Either Socialism (the dems) or democracy ( the republicans) and who controls congress and senate.
I can see the dems back room boys making a deal. I can understand why they are afraid of a brokered convention. What a riot that would cause.
The dem party made all those rules about Super delegates, etc. now when they don’t like the outcome they want to “fix” it. And they call that democracy? Oh thats right. We aren’t a democracy. We are a Republic.

What’s the Democrats problem? When politics had some sense in this country, candidates were only selected at the conventions. Maybe the Democrats will bring us back to that after screwing up the primary process in 1968. Anything that will reduce the enormous waste of time and money in our electoral process, which reached its apex of ridiculous these last two years, will be welcome. Cordially, Duane Clarridge

Comment by mark masters

What do you think these two are doing. They are already speaking on theire positions on most issues, they are campaigning right now. I believe that if you are voting democratic you will have a very good idea who your canidtate is by the time these two are done. If you are undecided weather you are voting democratic or republican then you still have an oppertuinty to see your choices in these primaries.

Comment by Jerry

The Democratic National Committe made a decision, short sighted as it may be, to not allow Michigan or Florida to seat their delegates for voting easrlier than what the DNC wanted. To now turn around and allow them to be seated would be unjust in as much as not all candidates were able to campaign in these states nor chose to waste money where delegates would not be counted. To now allow these delegates to be seated would be tantamount to allowing voter fraude in the same manner that the Judge making a ruling in Misouri during the last general elections that the poling places must be forced to stay open later than the normal cut-off time to allow people, and I may add too lazy to get out on their own during the normal 15 hours that the poles were open, to vote and not be disenfranchised. The Constitution of the United States forbids (and the Supreme Court upheld) that changeing the rules on or after election day is not permitted. To allow caucuses to take place of the already held elections would also constitute fraud no matter who wins. Enough with the sour grapes. What is done is done and maybe the DNC will think twice before they anounce and institute another bonehead plan like this one.

Comment by Chris in San Diego

McCain better pick the “right conservative” running mate to bring the party together. If he tries to pander to independants and moderates he will most certainly alienate his base and he will get crushed.

I still think he gets crushed in November. He has left a bitter taste in the conservative base.

Mitt Romney in 2012!!!!!!!!! At this point still won’t vote for McCain unless Romney endorses him publically or Romney is on the ticket.

Good luck McCain. Even if Romney or Huck are on the ticket McCain still loses. Dems are fired up and the stupid republican House and Senate screwed up for the last 8 years. I think people want a Dem president. Have you seen the vote totals Dems = 18 million Rep = 12 million. Also, All the big states Won by McCain they are overwhelmingly Big Democratic States. He won’t win a single one. Like New York, California, Conneticut, Delaware.

Sad to say but the Reps have lost there best chance with Romney. Fate will play out and he will be back to unite the party in 4 years. Hopefully by then bigotry will be gone and people will realize he is the “conservaties conservative.” Listen to his withdrawl speech — he means what he says, even at a time when he has lost the bid for nominee.

Comment by Dan M

Really doesn’t matter who the democratic nominee is, or when. The American people are not going to want to surrender to bin Laden, or higher taxes. McCain will win this election easliy.

Comment by Mike

Well if they just counted Florida and Michigan it wouldn’t be close….. Or who ever win the state get all the delegates then it still wouldn’t be close,,,, It clearl that Hillary can win the big states that have diversity in which you got to have in NOV….. and this where Obama dont have right now he can’t carry NY, Fl, Tx, Ca where Hillary can….. Obama have to show me he can win the bigger state.. All those RED states in won in the Primary like GA, SC, AL etc,,,, it wont be there in NOV……

Comment by Adealia Artist

Hillary will win the fix is in. The Democrats do not want a Black man for president. They will use super delegates and seat Michigan and Fla. if they have to in order to make sure Obama is not the nominee. They know that soon the Latinos will be so big a voting block they will not longer need the Blacks. White racists they are.

I will not support John McCain as long as there is another Republican choice. If Huckabee stays in, he will get my support. If he drops out… …well let’s pray he doesn’t and can build momentum. I would like to vote in November but it would betray my principles to vote for Mr. McCain.

Comment by Jamie

Republicans should learn to care about people that are not in their party. They should also learn that just because you don’t agree with Rush, Hannity, or any other spokesperson for their movement that it doesn’t mean that you are not pro-America.

Democrats need to learn that you can’t solve the worlds problems by passing out the government’s money to help people that don’t want help. They also need to learn that hand-outs are killing the us. The middle class suffer when Democrats do this. Both parties are really only out to do what is in the best interest of the people in their party and that is sad. That is why I am an independent.

Since people died for me to have the right to vote I always excercise my right to do so. My two choices were Huckabee or Obama. The reason I chose one of the two was because I think although they will never admit it, they both hubber somewhere in the middle. Neither are completely right or left. They both understand what it means to unite and that no agenda will be realized unless the commander in cheif of this country can unite congress.

The two front runners as of February 8, 2008 (Clinton and Mccain) are hated by both parties so much, that neither will be able to do anything.

Sincerely,
Average American

Jeffrey, the ONLY ones that have brought up the “Draft” in the past 10 years are DEMOCRATS in Congress. Now that they control both houses of Congress, you have more to fear from them than from McCain.

Comment by SNT

“Don’t worry, a McCain nomination is a guarantee win for the Dem’s. No one wants a 100 year war and the possibility of the draft.”

This is one of most ingnorant comments I have heard in awhile. I don’t recall anyone that has proposed a draft, not even the current administration. Nor would be needed with record numbers of militray recruiting, and the brave men and women who choose to go back to combat for the good of our nation.

This is not the 60’s. Surrender in a war that involves one of the worlds largest oil reserves, is not an option. Why would any sane person think of withdrawing, with Iran creating nuclear weapons next door or worse leaving to Al Qeada. Stay off the kool-aid.

And the Democrats will wonder why they can’t win anything. A Democrat lead House has can not even follow what they ran on. I agree with Obama “We need change”. Unfortunatley for him, that change involves less Democrats.

To suggest that McCain actually wants a 100 year war, or a draft, is not only silly but incorrect. McCain actually sees clearly that threat that exists in the world today. Apparently Obama thinks that by bringing the troops home now, somehow this threat and all that it represents is over. If this is the case, I find it dangerously naive. And if Obama does somehow win the Presidency - how are we going to feel watching him sip tea with Hugo Chavez at the White House?

Train wreck
How can the democrats lose? Let the people decide quit whining. If Hillary gets it you win. If Barack Obama ding dong wins you win. And if McCain wins the democrats win.
Its the republican party that should be crying. They have no candidate. John flip & flops so much and cuts deals with the Dems. So be happy guys you can’t lose.
Which candidate will unite the country again. ClintonBush tore it apart. Hillary won’t help. Perhaps make it worse. The republican party is a mess and if Hillary wins thats sure to unite the republican party. So do the dems really want Hill? I smell a witch hunt if she wins the oval office.

Latest poll i read stated , who would Mcain do better against in the General election,Clinton or Obama, it states Clinton,51%,Obama 49%,i think the more and more people hear Obama, they realize he has no platform,no experience what so ever, and if it hadn’t been for the press drooling over his every word, and going GAGA on TV over him,and blasting Hillary for every word she says, this thing wouldn’t even be close,it would of been Hillary in a landslide!!! Shame on you!!! I am not even a democrat and i can see all of this!!

Comment by Louis

The only solution is to count the delegates from the Florida and Michigan primaries. The people in those states have already voted and the Democrats should respect those votes. You can’t say that the votes of the people don’t matter which is exactly what the Democrats are doing to Florida and Michigan. Nor is there any reason for a “do over” vote in those states. Everyone had an opportunity to vote and there was a fair election.

Jeffrey writes…

Nice propaganda Jeff. McCain has NEVER endorsed a draft and he said we MIGHT have a military PRESENCE in Iraq for 100 years…you know kind of like the military presence we’ve had in Japan, Germany, Korea, etc for the last 60 years. He never said we would be at war for 100 years. Typical liberal spin I know but it’s a pretty weak one. And the Democrats accuse the GOP of scare tactics. LOL

It’s funny how democrats are always fear-mongering about the Republicans bringing back the draft, when the democrats actually submitted bills to congress just last year seeking to do just that.

We all know Hillary is hated by Rebublican Conservatives. But we are neglecting what Rebublican could and will be throwing at Obama–Like what they did to Kerry.
All they have to keep on repeating is the Obama story- unfortunately only the published facts.

. Father -Step Father were Muslims.
. Attended Madrassa in Indonesia when a child.
. Smoked Pot and Cocain when a youth

See, this is dirty, playing a race card. But being true it will be hard to defend– particularly if repeated again and again, like what they did to Kerry

This was predictable. I had earlier predicted that Ms. Clinton, aided by Mr. Clinton, would self-destruct. In short, the democrats would consume their own. There will be a train wreck in Denver. Probably be as ugly as the democratic convention of 1968 sans the Chicago police force.

Obama would be a far more onerous challenge to the republicans. Ms. Clinton carries too much baggage (Mr. Clinton). I really like Senator Obama as a person. He is bright, energetic, and has that Kennedy appeal to him. I just regret his policies and philosophy are way too liberal for this conservative republican. Damn! Wish he were republican (and conservative).

Don’t you just love it. For a party that fought President Bush for the last seven years because they said he didn’t want all the votes to count, this is just wonderful. This is an invitation to all the Democrats in Florida and Michigan, if they don’t value your vote you are welcome to join us Republicans and elect McCain the next president of the United States. Anyone who can survive 6 years in the Hanoi Hilton can stand up to the other party and do great things for this country.

Now the Republicans just have to win back Congress. If you have seen the polls on Congress approval lately you’ll see the Republicans will likely win that back too.
When will Democrats finally understand they don’t have a clue what the Average American believes. Kind of funny since they ACT like the only party that understands…why do so many people vote Republican then?? You all need to do some serious soul searching…we don’t all have California or NY values.

Hillary did not at all campaign there in FL or Michigan. Those delegates should be seated and they will count. Holding another election is not the right thing to do. Split the Michigan delegates but FL, those should go by the vote that was already done. Hillary didn’t campaign and Obama was there also for a fundraiser. The difference, Obama bought commercial air on a National Station which aired his campaign promotion in FL, breakin’ the aggrement that they were to not campaign. Hillary did no such thing. So despite his tacky tactic, it didn’t work. He still lost FL. Hillary ‘08!!

Exactly when is Barack Obama going to let us all in on what his policies are. All we have heard from his camp is how wonderful it is to be part of the Obama campaign and how wonderful he is. He is an outstanding orator but I for one would like to know exactly what he intends to do if he should become president. If we face a war is he going to run? If Israel is attacked by Syria and or other Middle-eastern countries is he going to help? We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the world. France has lower corporate taxes than the US. Business needs a break to be able to invest additional dollars in new infrastructure. What is Barack going to do to help corporations create jobs.

If we have a recession like it appears we are headed for, what are Barack’s economic policies and how does he intend to stimulate the US economy? I am seriously disappointed at the latest bipartisan stimulus package that is going to stimulate the Chinese economy but do nothing for our own. We have to barrow the $150b from China and the people receiving the money are going to spend most or all of it on good manufactured in China.

Obama has forgotten how much his black brothers and sisters suffered during the Reagan years. He is the beneficiary of black racism to begin his political career with in IL, yet he praises REAGAN AND THE REPUBLICAN’S IDEAS FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS. We just don’t know whom Hillary is running against, a Repblican or a Dem. a trueful man or a hypocrite.

Comment by Paul K

I am a Republican and objectively if you democrats want to win in the Fall, Obama should be your choice. The Repubican base will be much more likely to mobilize against Clintons. One big problem though, I don’t think Hillary will just step aside gracefully. The Clintons are power-hungry. I’m going to enjoy watching this play out.

But What you Fail to relize people is that democrats and republicans don’t care about the people anymore. You talk about the peoples voice being heard well now is the time I saw america Unites and takes back the govt from politicians Look at the Golden Fleece plan if you don’t think politics is out of hand . It’s not about the good of america it’s about the good of them!

The Democrats have already lost Michigan and Florida anyway in the national election. By not allowing them any delegates they are simply saying we do not care about these two states. I believe that both Michigan and Florida will be won by the Republicans in the Presidential election and that means a win for McCain.

Comment by AJG

Hillary is too unstable to be President and McCain is more of the same. Obama is the only choice. Granted he is a socialist but lets face it the banks, international companies etc have betrayed the people of the United States. The Republicans had a chance and sided with China, Mexico, illegals etc over their own people. Bush is a moron who has ignored our Heath Care Crisis, the coming failure of Social Security, let of dollar go down etc. Lets give socialism a chance at least the wealthy and powerful will not longer be allowed to LOOT America. We the people own them nothing.

Maybe both parties should work together and solve our real problems. Out of the total population of millions…how many are more concerned with taxes, social security, wasteful spending, and the US infrastucture rather than a national health care program, or other social issues? Polls are so selective in nature and usually do not reflect a true result. Polling in NY will get different resuls than FL and CA and TX…etc….polss should take a overall approach and prorata to represent the entire set of views. For example, people in ND or SC, or WA should have a voice in all polls just as the large population satetes….we all get one vote but their voice is not heard in many cases. Most statistics are still revealing that the majority of Americans do indeed have health care and no American can be refused emergency health care. In addition most states provide and many drug companies provide some type of care and RX plan….in addition to federal programs. All three of these leading candidates should not rely on the biased polls but seek their our facts from independant sources……Ever climbing taxes, Social Security failure looming, and the wasting of tax money with prok barrel spending and local project in lieu of national issues are harming America. In the coming few years, the Baby Boomers will retire….there goes a large portion of the tax revenue, and huge increase in Social Security/Medicare cost. We, as a country, need to fix the currently broken programs and plans and at least delay any new “entitlements” at such an emormus cost. Do you get it candidates?

Here’s the solution: Clinton/McCain ticket… er, McCain/Clinton ticket… I can barely tell them apart.

Since the polls show that Obama has the best chance of beating McCain, Bill/Hill should do what is best for the party…. drop out

For a minute I thought you were going to suggest something more drastic!

Comment by Jerad

I think we need to elect Hillary this year. Let her mess things up for 4 years and then we can get a real conservative in the White House.

Hillary 2008!!!

Mitt Romney 2012!!!

Comment by Big Daddy

Hey Dems

Get ready for another 4 more years of Republican rule.
Silly libs, when election time comed you offer nothing to WORKING, PATRIOTIC, MORAL AMERICANS.
While people may not love McCain, if given the chaice between Clinton & Obama he will easily win. The United States will never be the Socialkist country you so desperately hopes it becomes.

SF 18Z has an excellent point. Congress has an all time low approval rating, and since more Democrats are in control of both houses of Congress, chances are pretty good that the Republicans will gain some control back in one or both. The Democratic candidates are making lots of promises on solving every person’s individual problems, where exactly is this money going to come from in a Recession. We need a fiscal conservative who will veto Pork projects. I wonder who would do that better?

Comment by Ron

How can they not seat the delegates from Michagan and Florida. Does the democratic party who only four years ago proclaimed “every vote counts” pretend that these elections never happened, and the these votes don’t count.

Comment by Zarras

If Iowa and New Hampshire can have their delegate selection events early why can’t Michigan and Florida? This certainly tilts the political playing table unfairly to IA and NH.

Comment by Sharon

The Democrats must choose the candidate with the most delegates as their nominee. This is not a gambling session! The people’s votes must be counted. The fact that the candidates are so evenly matched and the race is so hotly contested is good for democracy. McCain was all but coronated by the Republicans; however, Clinton and Obama have no choice but to battle it out to the finish. May the best woman win!

Comment by Great American

What a bunch of hogwash!

Republicans are not rallying around GW and definitely not rallying around McCain because GW’s endorsement.

Wake up and smell the coffee! The RNC is in deep trouble and Huckabee is the last chance we have to gain the RNC back.

As for 2008 Obama or Hillary or Even John Edwards will whip John McCain handily and I am a republican that has followed the party line up until our Front Runner became a liberal.

Democrats your time is now and you will have to work really hard to screw it up.

Comment by Shane

They both stink just about as bad! I guess it makes little difference.

McCain might as well be a Democrat, so unless Huckabee can somehow pull off the nomination, we get a Democrat any way we go.

God help us all!

“Hillary will win the fix is in. The Democrats do not want a Black man for president. They will use super delegates and seat Michigan and Fla. if they have to in order to make sure Obama is not the nominee. They know that soon the Latinos will be so big a voting block they will not longer need the Blacks. White racists they are.”

This comment is ridiculous. Whites, blacks, mexicans…..whatever. look past the races and try to focus on what is important.
