McCain Apologizes for Radio Host’s Obama Comments at Rally

John McCain apologized Tuesday for disparaging comments about Barack Obama made by talk radio host Bill Cunningham at a McCain campaign rally in Cincinnati.
Cunningham, a radio host at WLW-AM, had warmed up the crowd at Memorial Hall with comments about Obama and Hillary Clinton, likening Obama to a “hack, Chicago-style” politician and saying the Illinois senator would “saddle up next to Hezbollah,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il if elected president.
When McCain addressed the crowd, he apologized for the remarks. “I regret any comments that may be made about these two individuals (Obama and Clinton) who are honorable Americans,” he said. “We just have strong philosophical differences, and so I want to disassociate myself from any disparaging remarks that may have been said about them.”
Though McCain apologized for remarks directed at both Democratic presidential candidates, Cunningham’s comments were directed at the Obama camp.
Cunningham had delivered remarks that painted a grim future for America if “Barack Hussein Obama” is elected president. He mentioned Obama’s middle name three times.
“Obama just came back from meeting Ahmadinejad; he’s got a meeting the next week with Kim Jong Il of North Korea. Then he’s going to saddle up next to Hezbollah; they’re going to have a little cookie-and-cream party. All’s going to be right with the world.
“When the great prophet from Chicago takes the stand, and the world leaders who want to kill us will simply be singing ‘Kumbayah’ together around the table of Barack Obama, it’s all going to be great,” Cunningham said. “Things are going to be wonderful.”
Cunningham ended his stump speech with “if you think about immigration, think about terror, think about success in Iraq, there is only one man who can get the job done, John ‘Wayne’ McCain for president.”
McCain later took the stage and apologized for the remarks.
“I will take responsibility in any offense that was inflicted,” the Arizona senator said.
Asked whether the use of Obama’s middle name — the same as former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein — is proper, McCain said: “No, it is not. Any comment that is disparaging of either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is totally inappropriate.”
McCain said he didn’t know who decided to allow Cunningham to speak, but he said he was sure it was in coordination with his campaign. He said he didn’t hear the comments and has never met Cunningham, but “I will certainly make sure that nothing like that happens again.”
Bill Burton, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, applauded McCain’s remarks.
“It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues,” Burton said.
Last fall, McCain faced criticism for not immediately repudiating a voter in South Carolina who called Clinton a “bitch.” McCain chuckled in response to the voter’s question, but didn’t embrace the epithet. A few minutes later, he said he respected Clinton, a New York senator and colleague.
At one point on Tuesday, Cunningham compared Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Madeleine Albright, who he said “looks like death warmed over.” He also commented on the difference between former Ohio Rep. Rob Portman, whose wife is named Jane, and Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, who is gay. “Jane’s the main difference. But that’s a different story,” Cunningham said.
As Cunningham finished, Portman, who has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate, took the microphone to introduce McCain.
“Willie, you’re out of control again. So, what else is new? But we love him,” Portman said. “But I’ve got to tell you, Bill Cunningham lending his voice to this campaign is extremely important. He did it in 2000, he did it in 2004. It was crucial to victory then and it’s even more important this year with his bigger radio audience. So, Bill Cunningham, thank you for lending your voice.”
Speaking to reporters later alongside McCain, Portman said: “I was backstage so I didn’t hear everything he said. Bill Cunningham is a radio talk show host who is often controversial so it does not surprise me that he was controversial.” He added: “That’s, I guess, how he makes his living.”

Republicans have to resort to this because Obama is being given a free pass by the press and he refuses to address any issues. Even the press says they are giving him a free pass. Saturday Night Live had a parody on it and it is all over the news. Obama is running on a platform of “change” and “hope” with no substance and the Republicans have no other option but to make fun of him, because his image is all he has. If his image is flawed and then his campaign is flawed.
You Obama people need to go to his web page. I’ve read all of the issues that he has and they are all relatively the same as the other candidates with minor differences. For example, he wants to lower emissions and lists the year 2016 as a deadline. The other candidates state the same thing but they list 2020 and 2030 as deadlines. Obama has nothing to guarantee that it is even possible to lower emissions by 2016, but it won’t matter because he will have served 2 terms by then and be gone, so he can’t get questioned on it anyway. Who can possibly say what year we have the technology to do this? He just picked a more aggressive date than the other candidates to make himself look better. He has no idea if he can meet that deadline or not.
He wants to withdraw troops from Iraq. Al Qaeda will simply take it over and kill everyone that cooperated with the USA, just like they are doing now. They have killed the families of police chiefs and other officials that supported the USA. Then they will regroup and come after us. You can’t reason with someone whose only goal is to kill you and themselves for 72 virgins.
Also, the guy’s middle name IS “Hussein”. What do you expect? I know you are going to say that not all Muslims are terrorists. True, but all terrorists HAVE BEEN Muslims. If you have a name like that, people are going to make fun of you. Whatever brain-trust billed (no pun intended) a shock jock on the stage of a political arena should be busted down to the individual who sweeps up the auditorium after the rally. It is quite clear why McCain had to apologize. He can’t let the race for president of the United States be based on race only. That will give Obama ammo. Obama is trying everything he can to use “race” as a issue. He will call McCain racist and all the Democrat’s will fall to bow at the great Obama’s feet. As a republican I am somewhat ashamed that this type of rhetoric is being spoken and the inferences it expresses. I don’t really care for McCain and am disillusioned with the present rep. party. But at least McCain apologized, but right now I still don’t think I will vote for him. I would never expect him to have this idiot Cunningham speak for him again. I may not agree with Barack Obama on many issues but I like his style, and if he can get rid of Clinton, well that earns him a couple of points in my book.
The problem with McCain as I see it is if he will apologize for the truth, regardless of who, will he apologize to Bin Laden for having to kill the troops? I remember when Nixon apologized to the north Koreans for shooting down our aircraft!! Are we on that road again? Strength not apologies create respect!!!!
What is wrong with calling an individual by his name. Names can tell us a lot about the person.
A name like Hussein causes an alarm flag to go up. as far I am concerned. I think many Americans feel the same way.

I’m getting pretty sick of the big issue of the “Hussein” business. The dude’s middle name is Hussein, if that is all the electorate can focus on, then this country does indeed have REAL problems!
There are a ton more things to worry about in this election than a candidate’s middle name for crying out loud! The fact that his middle name is “Hussein” is the only definitive thing we’ve actually heard from or about him. Let’s get on with the business of finding out all we can about the candidates and make good choices based on these facts.

All details may not be in on the lobbyists’ issues. New reports are emerging today about stress on our military due to long, multiple tours in the Iraq war and continued lack of equipment on the ground there, and McCain seems to be sending mixed messages on the war in Iraq. Let’s have a debate as Huckabee is calling for - McCain/Huckabee/Paul. Let’s delve into these issues and claify some things before McCain captures the nomination.
