Obama Calls Grandmother ‘Typical White Person’ in Radio Interview
Barack Obama called his grandmother a “typical white person” in a radio interview on Thursday, raising eyebrows among some of his critics only days after he sought to bridge racial division in a major campaign speech.
Obama had pointed to his mother’s mother in his speech Tuesday as an example of someone who harbored fears of blacks based on racial prejudice. The Illinois senator revisited his relationship with his grandmother on Thursday in an interview on 610 WIP, Philadelphia Sports Radio.
He denied his grandmother held hatred toward blacks, but described her as a “typical white person.”
“The point I was making was not that my grandmother harbors any racial animosity — she doesn’t,” he said. “But she is a typical white person who, you know, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, there is a reaction. That has been bred into our experiences that don’t go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way.”
On Tuesday, Obama described his grandmother as a woman who was at times fearful of black men.
In the speech, he said: “I can no more disown [Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother, a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her by on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.”
The remarks weren’t the only ones focusing on race and the campaign on Thursday.
Geraldine Ferraro complained that Obama had lumped her in with his controversial pastor, whom she called a “racist bigot.”
Obama mentioned the 1984 vice presidential candidate on Tuesday in his speech on race and his relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whose heated, anti-U.S. sermons raised questions about the company Obama keeps.
“To equate what I said with what this racist bigot has said from the pulpit is unbelievable,” Ferraro told the Los Angeles newspaper, The Daily Breeze, on Wednesday. “He gave a very good speech on race relations, but he did not address the fact that this man is up there spewing hatred.”
Ferraro, who left Hillary Clinton’s campaign finance team after saying Obama wouldn’t be where he is if he were white, said she had “no clue” why Obama included her in his speech. She said Obama’s relationship with Wright raises questions about his judgment.
“What this man is doing is he is spewing that stuff out to young people, and to younger people than Obama, and putting it in their heads that it’s OK to say ‘God damn America’ and it’s OK to beat up on white people,” she said. “You don’t preach that from the pulpit.”
The Wright controversy lit up shortly after Ferraro left her post on the Clinton finance committee following her initial interview with The Daily Breeze on Obama’s success.
In his speech, Obama drew a comparison between the two individuals.
“We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias,” he said.
Speaking in Philadelphia, Obama then argued that the issue of race cannot be ignored and that to over-simplify and focus only on the negative aspects of the matter would distort reality.
Overall, Ferraro said Obama’s speech was “excellent,” aside from the part where her name was mentioned.

There is no difference between Obama’s association with his pastor (Dr. “Wrong”) than David Duke’s (the once Grand Wizard of the KKK, former member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, and former candidate for the Republican presidential primary) association with the KKK. The only difference is that according to the liberal press, it is an abomination for a white person to be a bigot but perfectly acceptable for a black person.
The conduct of any that provokes hatred, incites divisiveness, and only promotes a division of races of all people in our country, rather than moving us together as “One Nation” is intolerable. The Rev. Wright and David Duke (and other like them) tear all Americans apart. We have become a people of hyphens. Because of these people we are not “Americans” but “African-Americans”.
We need to stop the use of “Hyphen-Americans” and become once again “One Nation, Under God with liberty, and justice for ALL”. We should ALL be outraged when anyone ignores racist and bigoted behavior. It is obviously a major character flaw that anyone, such as Senator Obama could actually ignore that behavior for over 20 years. He has either ignored it or he really does concur with what is being said by his pastor from the pulpit. What should we believe; the facts or what is being told to us? Can anyone truly believe that in the past 20 years this reverend has only spoken his hateful message once? Can we really be asked to believe that in the past 20 years the only time the reverend has used anti-white and anti-American language was the one time Obama was not in church?
Only a fool could actually believe that. Therefore, Senator Obama must think the American people are all fools.
Obama you should apolizies to Ms. Farraro and you know why because you’re a liar and I think you’re drinking your own kool aid with dope again….I will never speak negative about my native grandmother
It is almost impossible to pin Obama down he would say anything to deceive people. Just look at his lies; Had only 5 hours legal work for Rezko, just can’t recall ‘anyone’ knew Rezko was under investigation, just did not accept lobbyists money, oh Rezko contributed only @$148k and we have given it all to charity, now turns Rezko helped raise $250k, oh we did not have any meetings or contact with the Canadian on NAFTA; didn’t happen. Oh never heard my pastor make any controversal statements , oh was I in church when my pastor make comments I thought was controversial ‘Absolutely’.. There is no end to Obama lies,, wait for more! Guess what I never supported the war in 2002 oh, by 2004, I am on same page with George Bush on Iraq.. Oh I would tell American people about my patrotism from my heart.. not by wearing the pin etc,,, story, story..hmmm Oh, there are thousands of football fans who do not put thier arm across thier heart while watching a foot ball game.. Where did this Obama really come from???
Men and iam talking to all men.I hope we have learned a lesson, we should never ever let a woman come close to becoming a president in the democratic party again.never ever, see how women behave? they cant lose gracefully. They are both behaving Ferraro and Clinton like we already in a general election.I will never ever vote for a woman again my life, lesson learned!
While I do not condone any sort of hateful remarks on behalf of Mr. Obama’s minister, the thought of Geraldine Ferraro thinking that her comments were not offensive is absurd. I do not think that America is caught up in a great intrigue over the fact that Barak Obama is black. I think Americans are more intrigued over failures of our present leadership (i.e. oil being over $100 a barrel, using our government money for a war and bailing out investment companies hurt by a coming recession, more and more Americans losing jobs every day, and the help for the mortgage crisis being a $600 check) and are ultimately seeking alternatives. Given the severity of these failures, I would give Americans a little credit for having the sense to be colorblind now and not give an advantage because voting for a black man is suddenly in style. Just starting out in Obama’s foundation at multiple Ivy League institutions, he was not admitted there because he checked the African American box and an admissions officer thought it was neat. Regardless of agreeing of disagreeing with Obama’s politics, the thought that anyone would claim that race gave him some kind of an edge with his career up to this point is downright insulting.
talk about gender;;;;;;;that;s who been screwed forever”’;;;;;;;think where obama would be if he was treated like hillary;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; nut house,,black one
Oboma and his wife has been brainwashed for 20 yrs and thats why his wife said that this was the first time that she was proud of America because she wanted to be the first black 1st lady, she has lived hare all this time and enjoying the freedom that living here both getting an Education while hating to be here.
Look out if Oboma doesn’t get elected as to him, his wife and the bigit reverand will say we are all racist.
I would like to know what he means by “typical WHITE person”? I took that to be very offensive. I felt that he is telling me that all white people are racist and are afraid of black men. That is simply obserd. But you don’t see the media “harping” on it like they would if McCain or Clinton had said it. I think that the Media is so afraid of being called racist (GO O’RIELY–who isn’t afraid to speak his mind) that they try to avoid affending ANY black person on camera. Obama’s campaign looks for any reason to play the “Racist Card” whenever they can. Heaven forbid we say something negaitive about Obama and show who he really is in fear of “Offending Him.” We have no fears in slamming McCain and Clinton. On a different note, have you noticed that the media basically decides who wins this election. They have the power to sway the vote by the coverage they give. They never show you anything good about a person they only show you the negative. I guess that is why MIKE HUCKABEE never got any coverage. He had only GOOD things to say about him and that is just not news. I VOTE FOR MIKE HUCKABEE. Americans want a great leader write in MIKE HUCKABEE FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ms. Ferrero should, indeed, be angry about her comparison with Obama’s racist pastor. The two are nowhere even remotely comparable. Ms. Ferrero is merely stating the same thoughts that many of us have about any black achievement—-is it legitimate on the part of the person, or just merely the result of the set asides, lowered standards, preferential treatment or just plain out pandering for the sake of Liberal guilt or political correctness manifested in the decisions of a stacked court system? To even begin to compare the two, shows that there is a genuine lack of understanding of the effect of well orchestrated, malicious, vicious and purposeful hate speech hiding under the protection of clerical gowns and someone stating a considered opinion. Ms Ferrero was expressing a private opinon based on her own experience in politics, not trying to inspire hate, rebellion, defiance and disrespect for the very country whose paternalistic policies at the expense of many working Americans has kept these black race haters and race baiters alive—an exercise which Mr Wright does routinely.
Obama’s “explanation” was even more pathetic. I was waiting for him to tackle the actual problem. Instead, I was treated to the usual old song of “poor little us, we’re so hard done by” and the usual victimization, justification and rationalization excuses. While Obama drew other specious rationalizations and even insulted his own grandmother( again a private conversation was opposed to the rantings and ravings of a very public figure who goes out of his way to preach his racist agenda and demean , degrade, destroy and denigrate anything good about this country), I waited for him to do what should have obviously been done–end his relationship with this professional hate monger. It was clear that he feels that his original “explanation” is enough. For “White” America, it was no explanation at all. It is now plain that Obama has no intention of disavowing his hate-mongering pastor, yet still feels that he can represent all Americans. Can reasonable people afford to take that chance?
The sad thing about all of this is that it’s taken so long for the lies, distortions and deception to be discovered. Had Obama been honest from the get go, it’s unlikely that he’d have such a commanding lead in the delegate count as he does, but if you’re a Democrat/Liberal, truth and honesty mean little, the end justifies the means, and personal ambition is all. What still remains, however, are the facts.
FACT: Obama deliberately chose and Afrocentric church with a pastor who was known for his anti-white, anti American diatribes. Something had to resonate inside him to bring him there.
FACT: Obama stayed in that church for 20 years. something, and not only youth ministries, had to keep him there. Can someone remaining in a situation like this one NOT be influenced by the invective and hate spewed from his pastor’s racist mouth? Reasonable people who disagree with this sort of hate speech —-LEAVE THE SITUATION!
FACT: This pastor married him and his wife ( someone who only recently became proud of this country), baptised their children, and still continued to spew his hate into their ears.
FACT: Despite his denials , Obama knew what his pastor was and what he preached, if not, why did he choose to play hide the pastor when he announced for election?
FACT: Obama’s speech did nothing to change the situation. When you play the “poor little us” game, its clear that you have no intention of making thre hard choices but are looking for excuses to justify not making them. Do we want this man as President? The Liberal rag press is now comparing him to Lincoln——WHAT A JOKE! LINCOLN HAD COURAGE TO MAKE MANY HARD CHOICES!
I believe that we live in a provident , noble nation. Our history tells us that. I believe that we have all been protected from a man who has turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. To elect this man would be a travesty, but we all should remeber this “when you dance with the devil, you have to eventually pay the piper.”
I may not have liked Ms. Ferrero when she ran for Vice-President, but she never lied, connived, or deceived the public like Obama has. Just a few thoughts !
a great profit has said, a leader will arise that will show the face of one, but truly is of another, young men blow themselves up after a few years in religious schools in the middle east. what true beleafs can 20 yrs make and teach to hide on the private side of a public face. i am glad that im not the only one that sees this point now. obama has got to be stopped at the vote before he gets true power.
