NFL Schedules Season Opener on Night of McCain Nomination Acceptance

Border

The NFL’s Thursday night season opener will match the Super Bowl-champion New York Giants and the Washington Redskins, with the game possibly starting an hour-and-a-half earlier to avoid clashing with the Republican National Convention.

The game is now scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT on Sept. 4 — the concluding night of the Republican convention — and will be televised by NBC. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Wednesday that the NFL is talking with the network about changing the game’s starting time to 7 p.m.

The Super Bowl winner traditionally hosts the game. The Redskins’ participation was confirmed by a person familiar with the NFL schedule who spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced it.

The highlight games of the NFL’s first weekend will be announced Monday during league meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. The rest of the schedule will be announced later next month.

Who cares? McCain is going to lose anyway. I’d rather watch something interesting, like the paint on my wall dry.

Comment by richard vayghsan

your headkine should have read McCain schedules acceptance speech to conflict with NFL opener.

get it right troops. nfl trumps politicians anytime, anyday.

Comment by KenZ

Does the NFL REALLY need to schedule a game on Thursday night of the Republican Convention??? I mean, really, use some common sense people!! This damn Country of ours is so obsessed with focusing on money rather than traditional values; it’s DISGRACEFUL!! ENOUGH ALREADY!!

Comment by ginny

Ummmm…haven’t you been calling him the “presumptive” nominee all along? Are you paying attention to the FEC scandel? Don’t be so sure of yourselves in predicting the future!

Comment by connie

Let Mccain have his day for the Republican Convention. Reschedule the NFL event.

Comment by claudia schultz

Who cares, I’m a conservative that isn’t going to vote for McCain anyway. If I’m going to vote for a Liberal, I’ll vote fpr Obama. Fox, you have really lost it. Your news show is a laughing stock . It’s more like Fox Comedy program. What happen to the old real Fox.

Comment by gin

Your kidding, right?

Comment by Chris

This isn’t right. It would never happen if it was the Democratic Nomination Acceptance.

Comment by Bill A

Sounds good to me. To bad it isn’t on during his speech…..

Comment by David Jennings

are they going to ask us to vote for obama or clinton during the halftime show? I know nbc is the tank for the democratic candidate but please, not the nfl too.

Comment by Adam

I know what I’ll be watching.

Comment by Nancy MacRae

NBC’s BIASED is BLATANT!!

The only thing I watch on NBC (Nothing But Chatter) is the weather report, and it is usually WRONG!

Comment by Jane

I love football and do hope the time will be changed from 8:30 to 7pm. If the time isn’t changed, then football misses out! I must watch Senator McCain on the most important and well deserved night of his life. Lord, the man has earned it! From POW to POTUS! Only in America! Now that’s loving your country.

Comment by Adam

Great!!! Since McCain is a huge disappointment to conservatives everywhere there will be something to watch!

Comment by D

Oh well! It will be played repeatedly on the Republican stations the remainder of the night and the next day and for upcoming months.

Comment by Nathan

So if it gets re-scheduled the season opener will start at 4:00 on the west coast? I’ll still be at work. The NFL needs to keep in mind life exists outside of EDT… Maybe the RNC should re-schedule.

Comment by Earl Sjoberg

If you conflict with the acceptance you are going to turn off many nfl fans. I will think again of ever watching a game on NBC again. Sounds like someone is trying to sabatage the Convention. We don’t need NBC anyway if they won’t change the schedule then I will change mine.

Comment by JimW

The NFL should stay far away from even showing a hint of political favoritism by competing with an event such as a major political convention - either Republican or Democratic, or both. While I am a fan of the NFL, it would cause me to reconsider my support.

Comment by Don from Naples, Florida

The NFL should hold the season opener when it’s schedule permits, without regard to politics. The RNC should be smart enough to figure out how to use that schedule to its benefit- that what this great country is about!

Comment by gary

The National Football League should reconsider their timing for the opening season. They have placed fans in the middle of being a good citizen or a football fan. This seems very careless on the part of NBC but then they are part of the “main stream media” which tends to try and sway opinions about presidential candidates. When they can’t be successful at swaying opinion they just don’t cover the news!!!!!

Comment by Connie Fitte

I love football and look forward to the first fall game. However, I think Senator McCains, exceptance speech should diffinately supercede the game. I need to hear what my next President plans to do.. So move the opening game to another night. Thanks

Comment by Karen Lee

I am disappointed in the NFL’s schedule. I am a fan of the NFL season, however, how long has the NFL and the networks known of the Republican Party convention dates and the importance that the people in this country not be distracted by popular events such as this. I think there should be a ruling not to allow interferance with this kind of an event.
You better believe, NBS (and other networks) wouldn’t do the same with the Democratic convention airing. Is this just another way to not give McCain press? It seems over the course of this election air time has been quite lopsided. It feels like this is a calculated scheme.

Comment by setag

I’ll be watching convention not football if there’s a conflict — FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Comment by Steve

Don’t change the game time…we need something as an alternative to these pompous windbags who are systematically stealing our money and and constantly lying to us.

McCain is largely responsible for $Billions in additional losses by the Savings and Loan industry (Keating Five), erosion of our 1st Amendment rights (McCain-Feingold), decimation of our Federal Courts (gang of 14) and undermining of the President on National Security issues (public statements about Waterboarding and Guantanomo Bay). In addition, he’s ignorant of the fact that tax cuts have always generated higher revenues and he’s guilty of class warfare with his references to “tax cuts for the rich”.

Let the game go at its normal time. Otherwise, if I have to watch McCain, Ill need a puke bucket beside my TV

Is this really a shocker to anyone? If this was the same night as the Democratic Nomination acceptance there would be protests and media coverage 24/7!! All this clearly points to the continued lack of respect and apathy that is strewn towards the Republican Party.

Notice how the insurgency has started to rise again in the “green zone” since talk of a reduction in troops in Iraq. I guess if we get a Democrat in the White House we can then “cut and run”. Once the terrorists think we can be intimidated I am sure this will only embolden them to further acts of violence against the West!!

Comment by Nancy Porter

I think this is a Democrat conspiracy……..

Comment by David Oliver

Why would an acceptance speech by possibly the next President of the United States be improtant!! Why not consider renaming the two houses of congress to AFL and NFL so that our children take a interest in our Government. Change the game to another night - maybe the to a night important to Hollywood where nobody would care. NBC you will always be on the bottom - your lobottomy is complete.

Comment by Mike Johnson

I’m just sorry that we have to watch the Giants that night…lets go Bears!

Comment by Don Huffstetler

Well - let’s see - a football game or the fate of the nation. A tough one - huh?

Well, that figures! Afterall, football is much more important than choosing the leader of the free world, right?

Comment by SONIE

DOES IT REALLY MATTER?

Comment by Mike fischer

I much prefer the earlier start time. I start my work day at 7AM and can’t stay up to watch night games past half-time. It’s too late. I would watch the whole game if it started at 7PM.

Comment by sports fan

I’d rather watch football! Leave the original time alone, if anything needs changing, let the politician’s change their schedule.

Comment by Jane

Isn’t that something! I wonder if the NFL would show their game if Obama or Clinton had their acceptance speech schedule for the same night. I bet they wouldn’t. Come on, change your game night.

Comment by Barbara

Now, do you think the opener would be a different night if it was the Dem’s convention?

Comment by Curtis

Hey everyone is saying how Politics is a contact sport. What better way to start both seasons. Go Carolina…

Comment by Jim Bloom

Again the a major network will do whatever it takes to lessen the importance of the Republican Presidential Candidate. The NFL should step aside and move the game to Friday.

If the choice is football or politics, I’ll even go for football.

NFL league meetings are in West Palm Beach, Fl, not Palm Beach, Fl. They are two different places.

Comment by James Lanius

NBC brings a new form of biased editorializing of the news to the table; editorializing by conflict scheduling. Leave it to left-wing NBC to try a subterfuge and of course deny any awareness of the connection and its political impact. To deny can only mean they are grossly unaware of current events (read that as stupid), or they are lying.

Comment by michael fitzgerald

I think the word predictable just about sums it all up!

Comment by John Rothra

NFL season opener . . . Republican convention speech . . . I wonder which one will dominate the ratings? I’m confident it will be the Redskins/Giants game. Now, if this was the Democratic convention, the NFL might lose in the ratings race, but against the GOP, the NFL will fare much better.

Comment by Good Story?!

Let me guess, this is the direct result of the liberals? Or maybe, just maybe, it’s the media’s way of defending Barack Obama?!

Comment by J.O. Williams

FANTASTIC! Now, there will be something INTERESTING to watch!!!
Thank you, NFL!

Comment by Jimyz

I’m ready for some football!!!

Comment by Robert Richter

Something smells and it ain’t the NFL.

Comment by Craig

GO McCAIN !!!!! ALSO, keep in mind that when Obama was sworn into his current office - he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Kuran (Their equivalent to our Bible, but very different beliefs)

Comment by Charles Scheufele

With NBC political bent that can be expected. My guess is that was done with a purpose

This might actually help the Republicans because people will make glances at the convention without burnout. I don’t perceive the season opener being that much of an attention getter that no one will watch the convention.

Comment by J miller

Why would this time be a surprise? Anything that the public media can do to come against the Republicans seems to be justified. I think it stinks! Of course from my point of view it’s not a toss up I don’t watch football.

Comment by Michael

Alright! Now I’ve got something entertaining to watch instead of getting ticked off watching McCain wrip off his base while running as a democrat…

Comment by randy zitzman

nfl is so stupit no moor mondaynight games no moor saterday games i will warch the big gye not football

Comment by Mike

It’s so typical. Republicans can’t catch a break on TV. I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that the Dems’ acceptance night has no conflicts whatsoever and all the networks that aren’t covering the Dem convention show reruns during the time slot.

It’s amazing how seemingly sensible, capitalist entites, such as the NFL want to bite the hand that feeds them. I hope they like their TV revenue money being confiscated, which is what will happen if Osama Obama or Billary is elected.

Comment by A disappointed fan

I can’t believe the NFL has made this decision. Even if they move the game to 7:00, everyone knows it won’t wrap up until close to 11:00. This would never have happened if it was to be the final evening of the Democrats convention. It’s well known that the mainstream media will do anything to support the Democrat party, but am surprised that the NFL would be such a obvious pawn in their game. Wonder what back room deals were offered to pull this off?
