Sen. Leahy to Sen. Clinton: Give Up
BURLINGTON, Vt. — Sen. Patrick Leahy is suggesting that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton abandon her White House run.
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and six-term Vermont lawmaker said there is no way that Clinton is going to win enough pledged delegates to get the nomination. Leahy told Vermont Public Radio, in a show that aired Thursday, that Clinton ought to withdraw and should be backing Sen. Barack Obama. But Leahy said that’s obviously a decision only Clinton can make.
In a statement issued Friday, Leahy — who has endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination — said Obama’s lead appears to be insurmountable and that Obama’s endorsement by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is the latest sign of how the race is going.
“Senator Clinton has every right, but not a very good reason, to remain a candidate for as long as she wants to. As far as the delegate count and the interests of a Democratic victory in November go, there is not a very good reason for drawing this out. But as I have said before, that is a decision that only she can make,” Leahy said in the statement.

Obama or Clinton getting the nimination makes no difference. John McCain will be the next President.
There is no way that Hillary is going to give up - she’ll take it to the end and do whatever it takes to win. The threat by major donors to Pelosi is just an indication of the methods she’ll use - extortion, threats, buying off. Whatever it takes.
I thought my vote counted. I suppose it doesn’t.
What is it with these Democrats who want to surrender and “give up.” I’m expecting Senator Reed to announce any moment now “The campaign is lost!”
Sentor Leahy is right, Hillary should give it up now.
Looks like the beginning of the end …
Hang in there, Hillary!
Mr. Leahy should realize that neither Obama or Clinton will have enough delegates to secure the nomination. All delegates, not just superdelagates, can vote as they please according to the law. The DNC would like change the rules but we will see if any delagates have the guts to make up their own mind. Pledged delegate is like a politician saying “I promise”.
Senator Leahy doesn’t get it… Hillary Clinton will win the Democratic Nomination because the Super-Delagates will push her numbers over the top. Obama is “damaged goods” now, and it’s only going to get worse. He cannot win in the general election, and the Super-Delagtes are the only people now who can save the Democratic Party from utter defeat in November.
Hillary…Get Out Already!!
I hope she stays in the race right up to the end.
The more she talks the more we can see what kind of person she is.
She is just the kind to do whats right her and NO one, but her.
The Clintons have all ways put there interest first…
Buster
Mr. Leahy, why don’t you give up? I think 6 terms in the senate is enough for you.
Will Hillary see the writing on the wall? I think not. She is definitely not very Presidential! Lord help us if she was dealing with other countries!!
I think Senator Leahy has served one mysogynistic term too many. Why should either candidate concede before the primaries are complete and the Michigand and Florida vote finalized? It’s bad enough we ultimately have the electoral colllege deciding who should rule our great country. The people’s voices should be heard…come on Senator!!!
i agree she should get out but bill wants back in the white house so bad he will drag this out to the bitter end
Sen. Leahy needs to “get a grip on reality” and stop making ridiculous statements like the ones illustrated in this article. Barack Obama only has a VERY SLIGHT LEAD over Hillary Clinton and NEITHER CANDIDATE can win enough pledged delegates to get the nomination on their own - this will have to be decided at the Democratic Convention per the DNC’s own rules. So, why should Sen. Clinton drop out? That is an absolutely ludicrous suggestion, especially when you consider the fact that Sen. Clinton is the only Democratic candidate who is actually winning the key battleground states which are necessary to win in a general election. While Obama has a very slight lead over Clinton, Clinton has proven she is by far more electable, and she should, therefore, not drop out of the race.
Hillary is too caught up in her own self interests, ego and a quest for power to care about what is best for the democratic party. With her chances of gaining the nomination “going down the drain”, she’d rather see the democrat party destroyed than “give up” her political ambitions. In a sense, what it amounts to with clinton is simply “mind over matter - she doesn’t mind and no one else matters!”
With respects,
A Viet Nam Vet - in country 7/66 - 11/71
When my vote no longer counts as a democrat its time to vote republican.
She should never have run…..I think she should stay in the run to help John McCain win…..She is just hurting her party , so go girl.
Maybe Obama should withdraw. There are some Americans that still believe that those who support the hate mongers and associate with them on a close personal basis would not be a very desirable leader of the USA,
Clinton should give up. I think every day that more will come out about her opponent. Plus “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know”. That is an old-time cliche, but I think is true in this case.
If someone (Obama) sounds too good to be true, he probably is.
As a church goer, I don’t agree with everything my minister says, but I do agree with most. If I agree at least 80%, I would change the church I attend and I certainly wouldn’t socialize or have him part of my presidential campaign.
I think America is so afraid of appearing racist that they are not looking closely at a relatively unknown candidate. In addition, so much of Obama’s support is the young, idealistic, believe-all-you-hear voters.
¥es!!!! Hillary get out!!!!!
Why will Hillary not give up? Because she is placing her own ambitions and presidential aspirations above what is best for her party and one could certainly argue this country that she LOVES so much (as the tears flow down her cheeks). My question, why is the media not calling her out on this daily? The odds of her attaining the nomination - non existent! The only good I see coming from her continued fight? With each passing week she and her campaign sink a little lower - from Gerldine Ferraro a couple of weeks ago to the fat cat donors threateing to pull support from the DNC for Nancy Pelosi position on the delegate race this week. Perhaps if she continues to push the envelopes behind the scenes, all Americans will come to realize just how low she will sink to satisfy that thirst for power and ambition. My bet - there is no floor to the depths that she will sink to win! Finally, it is one of my upmost desires that the historians of this great nation will remember and memorilize Hillary R. Clinton as the sore loser from the 2008 race for the democratic presidential nomination that committed political suicide in her fight to win at all cost!
i totally disagree with senator leahy. her supporters do not want her to give up. there are more people who want to vote and some big state primaries coming up. just because obama is ahead slightly doesn’t mean he has won AT ALL. as far as i can tell, he can’t win either!
Keep going Hillary, I love to see the Liberal Democrats tearing each other apart, this should squash any chance of a Democrat winning the White House!!
Yesterday, Obama gave a speech in which he said ‘There are lots of
Jewish people who are as moral, if not more moral than I am….’. How
could you not possibly interpret that in a negative way. Sounds a lot
like old Jesse Jackson to me. In addition to the Irish and Polish
comment, what is he going to have to do in order to get the media to
cover these gaffes?
Also, did you hear about what Rev. Wright said about Italians?
The ‘Jewish folks’ clip was played in a loop on WTKK talk radio
yesterday, but I didn’t hear it played anywhere else!
I think that we will continue to see Obama’s real face every single day!
Shame on you Sen. Leahy!
It’s your comments that will DIVIDE our party! Neither candidate has enough delegates to WIN the nomination. The party rules state it’s the SuperDelegates that will decide who our most Electable nominee is!
It’s also shameful how Hillary is depicted as some evil Temptress day after day! We are finally seeing a side of the “favorite” candidate that is causing the electorate to reconsider this unknown politician. Is this why you and others have this “rush” to get him nominated??
Rev Wright, Rezko, Bill Ayers of the WeatherUnderground, Meeks, are just the beginning of America finding out who Obama is. His judgement, the company he keeps,,,,lots of questions, and many more questions about him will likely be answered by the end of the voting process.
Sen Leahy, perhaps you need to put your efforts into assuring the millions of voices in both FLORIDA and MICHIGAN are counted! We the remaing voters will decide who should lead our country. oh yes, by counting these states Hillary and Obama are even closer than they are today! hmmmmm
Hillary is unattractive and she is a big liar. Plus, imagine her as president politicking with world leaders like Vlad. Putin or Nicholas Sarkozy; They will tell her how can you tell me something about my country and the world and you cannot stop your husband from cheating on you. Come on, she was in the White House at the same time Bill was getting sex from Monica L. She needs to smell the coffee, no one likes her. Plus, if she won the primary all of Obama’s would side Sen. McCain or not vote at all. Unlike if Obama won the primary all of her supporters would vote for him. This is Obama’s race and she knows it but she is in complete shock that this has come taken her shine. She should have ran in 2004. America may not be ready for a Black pres., but the rest of the world is. Its time for a change. Our economy is a joke, our money is a fluke worldwide now and the present White House administration has messed everything up with our allies and other world leaders. These are some of the reasons why Obama must be president. He may become one of our greatest.
Hillary should definitely bow out. Obama is significantly, not slightly, ahead in total delegates, number of states won, and popular vote. She has won big states , but only by small margins. And these states, Obama will win anyway in the general election. But Hillary will never win the many smaller states that Obama has won.
Hillary’s negatives are proving to be very high. I think she and her husband are motivated by power.
Look who is giving out advice what joke Go John Mccain
I agree that the sponge and trough feeder Patrick Leahy ought to “go away”….tax payers have fed his fat butt long enough; ( six terms!!??) get a real job like the rest of us you sorry sack of hot air, and let Hillary does what she does best….fight to the finish!
While I was no Hillary supporter, she now seems a better choice than that closet racist who wants to pretend he isn’t a racist! I’d have had more repect for Obama ( who I was supporting) if he just came out an admitted he hated Whitey! What a race! What a time to be alive, …. unless of course Wright has his way, then Whitey goes under and all caucasian children pay for the crimes their ancestors commited.
Hey, Hillary; tell Leahy to mind his own business or end up like Vince Foster!
Hillary is too caught up in her own self interests, ego and a quest for power to care about what is best for the democratic party. With her chances of gaining the nomination “going down the drain”, she’d rather see the democrat party destroyed than “give up” her political ambitions. Who support her? Know more at blackwhitekiss .. com where black and white meet and minglge online ..
In a sense, what it amounts to with clinton is simply “mind over matter - she doesn’t mind and no one else matters!”
Hillary stay in the race. You are the one that this country needs. We all know who ran this nation when your husband was in the white house. Many good things came out of his two terms. STAY IN AND FIGHT!
Hillary, fight the good fight and never give up. Just think of all that money that your friends have spent on your bid. If you give up, you will never be president and you know that. Do not let Obama beat you…fight lady, fight to the end.
As a Republican, I say GO HILLARY!!!. Love watching the Dems expose each other for the racist identity politics playing hypocrites they are.
When McCain was up by 1000 points over Huckabee you didn’t get all this hue and cry for him to get out. Obama is leading by only 100 points. Don’t the Dems want every vote to be counted?
Sen. Leahy has made an outragous statement! He needs to step down he’s been there two long and is obviously having trouble with rationale decisions.
The DNC needs to seat the Florida delegates, they are hypocrites if they do not.
Hillary should keep going, she has won all the key states, no one will vote for Obama except for other people who have been raised to hate…
Jenna
Dirty secret - Democrats invented superdelegates as a safety valve against the likes of ‘undesirable’ candidates (Jesse Jackson springs to mind) because ‘the common man’ - whom the Dems claim to champion - can’t be trusted to elect the right candidate during the primaries.
The Democratic Party needs blacks to win but the folks in power don’t necessarily want one as President, regardless of all the high-sounding pronouncements. Maybe blacks will finally wake up and realize what patsies they’ve been all these years, by trading their dignity for entitlement programs, set up by the very party that championed slavery and has suceeded in enslaving them to big government for the last 100+ years.
Fight on Hillary to the death. Its your turn and Obama will not win as America will not at this stage elect a black man for president. Half of the democratic party knows this and the other half is asleep at the wheel and is out to lunch i.e. Nancy “Puloser.” Fight girl! Missourian Ed
A little math says that Obama leads Hillary by less than 4% of the delegates. That hardly seems like a done deal! The superdelegate system was concieved to avoid the choice of the wrong canidate in a tight race. As this progresses, Obama will certainly prove to be the wrong canidate for the Democratic party. Then we will all be glad that the superdelegate system was in place to prevent a certain loss to the Republicans.
Shut up Leahy! Shut up Dean! Let the process work as it was designed to do!
There are two reasons why a lot of prominent Dems want Hilary to drop out. First, they know that they will not be a major influence on her; she and Bill have always marched to their own drummer. Obama is a rookie when it comes to national politics, which is why “Uncle Teddy” has tried to take him under his wing (hope Obama knows how to swim!) Second, they know that no matter what the outcome is in the final delegate count, there would be riots in the streets if Obama wasn’t chosen. BTW, what would be the purpose of the convention if all the delegates vote by July 1?
How dare the Obama supporters ask Hillary to leave her campaign. There are still many big states left to vote, so is it that Obama is afraid he will lose big in those ones? Also, is that why they don’t want to count the votes from Florida and Michigan. The half vote thing is crap too. They are only discussing that because it won’t hurt Obama as bad. If you think that the American public is stupid enough not to see when certain people are trying to fix this race, you are crazy. The press is just as bad, they are so “in the tank” for Obama it is ridiculous. Fox news has been the only network I have been able to stand listening to lately. When I have to hear anchors saying they got tingles up their legs over a speech Obama made, it makes me want to puke. Aren’t they supposed to be neutral and just report the information? Personally, I would like Hillary to win. If she is not the nominee, I will vote McCain, and don’t blame Hillary for that blame yourselves. You guys have changed the rules a dozen times, just to make it work for Obama, and it’s not right. If you want the party united, then you have to let ALL the votes ,including ALL the votes from Florida and Michigan, count. You have to stop changing the roles of the super delegates one way or the other (whichever way helps Obama). Nancy Pelosi needs to remain neutral, which she isn’t(no matter what she says…every statement she makes is to Obama’s benefit). Give me a break. The Clintons have done a lot for the Democrats and for this country, at least be fair.
Hillary is the candidate that is a once in a lifetime opportunity and many of us believe that. She is loved by many for her battles against special interest like the health care industry and trying universal health care.
Isn’t it interesting how all the Obama’s endorsers are telling Hillary to get out. What are they afraid of her winning BIG in PA?
The title of this article is a distortion.
Leahy did not recommend that Hillary give up.
He pointed out the irrefutable reality of the current math. Hillary cannot catch up to Obama. Therefore Hillary’s only way of winning would be if the superdelegates overturned Obama’s lead and voted Hillary in against the will of the people (which would be self-defeating for the Democratic Party, as it would be destroyed).
Hillary has every right to continue if she chooses. However, she will have no escape for the serious ill will (toward her) that will no doubt result.
I have to laugh about Leahy kind ’suggestion’ as well as Sen. Casey’s endorsement of Obama. Did he really say he was inflluenced by his four daughters enthusiasm. That’s just it the young voters, and in this case the ladies have the hots for Obama. He is a cult figure but they aren’t looking at the real man.I have to find out more about Casey. Clinton is encouraged to drop out for the sake of the party. Of course Obama supporters want to end it while he is ahead. But is this the current will of the people. Obama would not have won the delegates he has if the news about his mentor Rev. Wright had been out there in the mass media from the onset. It raised serious issues but only recently, when his cult status was established. I am certain if it were all redone today, Hillary would be squarely ahead. Certainly Florida and Missoiri’s voters should count - is Obama trying to rig the outcome by not supporting this for his own benefit? All the votes should be counted and let’s see how the rest of it goes. I hope the superdelegates have the courage to understand that Obama’s background came out too late, and they have to show good judgement as to his candidacy. NOW Obama says he would quit the church, when for 20 years he supported, and made Rev. Wright his mentor and personal ‘family’. You can’t tell a book by it’s cover, and surely Obama is good looking, charming, and glib. But when you look beneath the cover at his actions, his friends and associations, it is obvious that he is not a man of character or good judgement. If anyone was associated closely with Hitler - for 20 years-in his inner circle and heard his tirades against the Jewish people, and considered him a close mentor and friend - and then said well I do object to some of what he said - but I can’t disown him etc. I know this is a dramatic analogy but when you think about it, it’s the same. Rev Wright preaches hate against whites, and hails people like Farakhan, a vile bigot and hate monger himself. Of course Obama knew all this and more but did nothing. Why didn’t he speak up in protest then - over so many years - it speaks volumes about this man. I would surely vote for a Black American to be President of the United States - but not this one. The oh so obvious bias of the press, CNN, NBC etc. is discusting, and it is one instance “I” am ashamed of what is going on in our country. I know truth is powerful and I hope Obama is eliminated as a candidate.
To: Requiem for a Jerk: So, do you vote merely for looks?!? How would you feel if some people do not
vote for Obama just because of his huge ears?!? And, for your information, there are actually thousands of us who love Senator Clinton. Are you sure, her supporters will vote for Obama if he becomes the nominee?
I would think twice calling Sen. Clinton a liar–seems Obama flips-flops every time he is questioned about his pastor, Wright. Get real, Jerk–you need to pay closer attention to what your “candidate” says every other day!!! It changes every time!
Only a low-life will write “sex and monica” in the same sentence in a discussion as this one. You sure have given away a lot about yourself and it “ain’t” nice!!!!!!!!
It is time for Hillary to give up.
Obama has won 13 of the last 15 states. Hillary has only won won state with a large gap. Hillary has no chance of overcoming Obama’s delegate count.
Most Americans do not want the Clinton’s again in the Whitehouse and are ready for REAL change. Even Hillary aids who worked under her don’t want to see the Clinton adminstration again. Hillary realizes she can’t win. If Obama was in her situation she would tell him to quit.
Neithe Flordia or Michigan delegates should be counted because the DNC decided it before the elections started. Hillary could have opposed it. But chose not to. Hillary is trying to silence the will of the people by getting Superdelegates to vote contrary to the way they are supposed to.
If Hillary won all 10 races (which she wouldn’t) she still couldn’t overtake Obama delegate count.
Again it is time for Hillary to step aside.
Those of you who are claiming this is about race. Sorry to burst y our bubble! I think we proved since Iowa that this was not about race. This is about hatred towards our America of Obama’s preacher, friend, inspirational leader, and mentor of Twenty Years. That Obama now has used the racial card to divert his relationship of Twenty Years with an AntiAmerican is the issue here.
Mentor: a person close to oneself that influence’s our Heart, Mind and Soul
Do we really want a president with such bad judgement that has supported a man that has shown such hatred towards our United States of America as Jerremiah Wright. That has made this Anti-American his Mentor.
Are we out of our minds?
This is not about race!! Obama would like you to believe this, for when its about race Americans want to do the right thing..But the right thing is not to vote for a man that has supported Wright who tells his congregation to say God D America, that has todl us we deserved the tragedy of 9/11 and so much more vomit of hatred towards America and its people. Obama has stood along side by supporting this man for TWENTY YEARS..And again today he has confirmed this along with the lie that he wold have left the church..Twenty Years in that church and now out of pathetic despiration he gives us this lie.
America lets do the right thing..Send the message of good patriots that we love America and that we can not elect a man that has supported and made Wright his Mentor!
May God Bless America!
senator leahry should not commented like that we have lost respect on him, read what al gore said that is a very respectable comments, he respected the 12 millions of people who voted for hillary, if leahry cannot respect us how can he respect the people in his states.
Senator Leahy RETIRE and take your fat pension. Hillary should keep fighting if she wants to. You had your way for too long and you are one of the people that made me a Republican. I will stay Republican no matter but Hillary has her rights.
Everyone is talking about age of the candidates. Some were saying that obama is too young but by the time he might be in office he will be older. If McCain is in office he will be very much older by that time.We need someone who might not have to rely on a vice president if possible.
Yes ,one man on tv says people now days are living longer but can we make good consistant decisions after age 71 with least amount of mistakes?
If a person is 72 -74 yrs old and president, they will be steering a fragile country, not driving or steering a slow car.
Gender is not an issue, OBAMA is the “best person” and especially at this ” time period”.
Obama would be great for two terms for us and the world, he earns his likeness and he’s genuine calm, cool and smart.
If we had to wait for obama in 2012 and not now, it would be too hard to turn around successfully, even with hillary in 2008, sorry but i had to be honest with the truth. The older population should take the time to take a closer look and be more open minded before election times coming .
In Pennsylvania polls, leading by double digits Clinton is. Obama’s star power declines. Stay she must. Destroy the Democratic party’s chances she will.
The world and the USA needs obama and age isnt an issue unless your John Mc Cain.It really is a waste of time and everything to go on with the voting after pennsyvania, but everyone should be able to vote. I did vote and i can imagine waiting this long after studying the candidates and not get to vote at all, period, that would be frustrating.
I think it would be awesome if obama won, ive done my homework every day (not every so often )and i paid attention open minded glued to the tv.The only broadcasts i listen to is major news like CNN , FOX MSNBC, etc.( most reliable sources )and the candidates themselves.
We need to see this through the entire process. This primary year is very different in that the candidates have very specific differences without talking politics. Hillary has represented the women and what they can achieve. Obama has represented the black voters and how far they have come to have a chance at the biggest office in the country.
I don’t think we can give either candidate the” short stick” by having one or the other back out and give support to the other. I don’t think this will be such a smooth transition as we’ve seen in the past. This is not the usual primary two white males campaigning. This is one female candidate and one black candidate.
Thank you for the cahnce to voice my opinion!
Carol (Democrat from Connecticut)
WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE OBAMA CAMP? WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF?
Obama is such a child. He uses everyone to fight his battles for him so he can come out smelling like roses. This is dirty Politics at its worst. He is so afraid of losing that he will use every card available - but not so anyone could directly say he said it.
He screams that delegates have to endorse the candidate that won the popular vote, but rakes in those that are “have to” endorse Hillary. He uses people to brand everyone “racists”. He now uses Senators to “demand” Hillary back out of the race. He is such a coward and a true mongoose. The more I see and hear from Obama and his surrogates, the more it scares me. There really are no words to describe this man, none of which would be pleasant.
HILLARY not only has the right to continue on to the Convention, she presents a very strong case to continue. HALF OF AMERICA WANTS HER THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HALF OF AMERICA DOES NOT WANT OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For any Senator to try and abuse our system is DIRTY POLITICS. THEY REALLY THINK they will have OBAMA in their pockets because he is so naive? Because he is making back room promises to these Senators, he know he wont keep?
YOU GO HILLARY! HANG IN THERE.
What a stinking nerve of this guy - who does he think he is? Notice how it’s all Obama backers - mostly men who are sexist. Makes me laugh though when me want “one thing” suddenly they need a woman. You all suck!!
Give up Barack Obama, drop out of the race, you are hurting the democratic party. You lied when you said you never heard Rev. Wrights’s anti-American, anti-white speeches and then the next day during your speech, you admitted you lied and that you did, in fact, hear it. Also during your speech you threw your white grandmother, who raised you, under the bus. That was disgusting. You and your gang are ruthless and will do anything to win. Drop out of the race. I have been a lifelong democrat but if you are the nominee, I will either vote for McCain or not vote at all.
The Clintons are destroying the party!!! Her true character has been exposed. She will lie, over exaggerate events (Kosovo visit and foreign experience) all to gain the power they once had. Obama will receive independent voter and some republican voter support whereas Hillary will not because she is divisive. Time for some one other than a Bush or Clinton in the White House (20 years is enough)!! Obama’s pastor has nothing to do with the character of Obama and anyone who thinks that we then should question the fact that Hillary is married to a liar and cheater who continues to make statements that shows again that Clintons are above the party and the will of the people! Give up Hillary!!!
Clinton will not give in and concede the nomination to Obama. The Clinton’s do not like to loose and I believe do everything in their power to try and pull out a win. She wants to be President, power is very important to the Clintons. I can’t imagine what she will be like when she doesn’t win the nomination. I’m just setting back and watching the Dem Party self-distruct.
Party elders are the ones who let Bush do what ever he wanted. So Leahy and other elders should “shut up”. The voters will decide - or party elders are as “deaf” and “blind” as Obama that they do not know that they live in a democracy where people decide.
I disagree with Senator Leahy’s and other leading democrats’ assessment of the situation surrounding the Democratic Party dilemma. Party leaders should be calling for Senator Obama to withdraw? He has not won any large states in the primary. Doesn’t this count?
Questions the Democratic Party should ask themselves: Who is the best candidate to run in the General Election? Who has the best chance to win over Senator McCain? Which candidate has won the largest states and has a good chance to win these same states in the fall? Answer: Senator Clinton
Erin
What makes BO’s campaign so scared? Why do they keep shouting:” Clinton: Give up!” If he is so holy and pure, he will not be hurt by this competition. Let the voters decide.
By the way, where is his record as a Junior senator? If she did eight things rightly and two things wrongly in her whole life, her mistaken rate is 20%. If he did two things rightly and two things wrongly in his whole life, his mistaken rate is 50%. Who is more accountable? Furthermore, He proposed relief for homeowners and the long-term unemployed as part of an additional $30 billion stimulus package this week, much like the one Clinton offered last week.
Send an email to these senators to be quite and let the American people vote the way it is suppose to be. They all have alternative motives for endorsing their candidate of choice and we the people have had enough.
