Rev. Jeremiah Wright Surprises Chicago Church With Appearance

Border

CHICAGO — Barack Obama’s former pastor, who canceled several public events following an uproar over his incendiary comments, surprised a Chicago congregation by attending an event to celebrate poet Maya Angelou’s birthday.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright got a raucous standing ovation when he entered Saint Sabina church on the city’s South Side on Friday night, according to video from WBBM-TV. Members yelled “Hallelujah!” as Wright embraced the Rev. Michael Pfleger, Saint Sabina’s pastor.

The smiling Wright accepted an invitation to give the benediction at the Roman Catholic church but did not address the furor over his past sermons. He also sang “Happy Birthday” to Angelou, whose birthday is April 4.

Afterward, he went into an office off the pulpit to greet audience members.

Pfleger told the CBS station he invited Wright because he is a fan of Angelou, who was at the church for a speaking engagement.

“I wanted him to come tonight as a guest because he loves Dr. Angelou, and I wanted him to see the love of people for him,” Pfleger said. “And so when I asked him about coming, he said he’d be honored to come and it was a blessing for us to have him here.”

Obama has condemned remarks from Wright that denounced America for allegedly racist and genocidal acts. Videos of Wright’s remarks circulated on the Internet and on television.

Wright has not spoken publicly since the controversy over his sermons began. He recently scrapped plans to receive an award in Texas, and to speak at churches in Houston and Tampa, Fla.

A 30 year ministry builds respect in the community.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to apologize for 1.) taking God’s name in vain, and 2.) bearing false witness against thy neighbor. But possibly he is too highly exalted to confess and repent like we mere mortals do. Maybe he did to a priest in a confessional? If he hasn’t, he should.

I am so glad to see the Rev. Wright out in public as he should be and not getting bogged down in the wicked crap that has been circulated throughout the media and on the internet. The black community has spoken and we say that this is not a racial matter and we will not let anyone make it otherwise. We loves the Rev.Wright and we support Barack Obama for the office of the President of the United States.

It doesn’t matter if Oboma attended any of the statements heard on the news. We choose our church based on whether or not the pastor shares in our values. If he doesn’t know, after 20 years, about ‘he the pastor’, what does he know after just a couple of years in D.C. about ‘WE THE PEOPLE’?

Comment by Steve Smith

Obama said that Sunday morning is the most segrgated hour in America. I didn’t see any white, Asian, or Latino faces in reverand Wright’s church. Are they not welcome?

People have got to be out of their minds..
Voting and or supporting Obama, a man that has proven his disloyalty of the Respect Americans deserve by supporting an Anti-American, a man tht curses America and yet Obama’s judgement is so low he stayed in for TWENTY YEARS!!!

Wright an Anti-American, who curses our country and we are giving him the time of day with this article…He can go crawl back into his hole and take his supporter with him and we should just not give him or Obama the time a day. We need to send a strong message that we all love our country and we are not going to be putting up with all this hatred.
yesterday Hanity & Comes had another pastor who said horrible things about Obama.
Are we not sick of all this? Obama has woken us up to racist, has set us back 50 years and has insulted all Americans by supporting an Anti-American man for Twenty Five Years..
Believe me folks, do you know who Obama is, has he sprinkled you all with the jones theory?
Drink the poison kool aid and America will be wonderful because obama is here? Please don’t get blindsighted by empty words, by people endorsing Obama because they believe in him.. The only thing these hypocrites believe in him , is what Obama has promised them if he should get elected! .. Send a strong messsage: We are not voting for a man that has supported Wright a man that has dammed our country ( AMERICA), has said we deserved the tragedy of 9/11 and so much more vomit of hatred towards our Nation. Say no on Obama! Send the message for we must vote for a person that loves America, not for a supporter of Twenty Five years for an Anti-American!

Comment by Rahseeda moore

Obama lied when he said he’d never heard Rev.Wright anti-American speeches. Obama gave this speech because he got caught. Otherwise this great speech would never occurred. He first denied knowing of Wright’s rhetoric. When he got caught then he gave this speech, but really, what else could he do? But that’s fine; all politicians lie. What I object about Obama is that he allowed his daughters to witness Wright’s demagogue thus perpetuating the cycle, diminishing the very post-racial America he is trying to achieve. I am trying very hard to reconcile both.

Comment by Nmiranda-la

Go back under the Rock! Wright no one cares where you go and where you come from. All we know is that we refuse to support n Anti-American. You really should take your supporter of Twenty years with you! We Americans can not support a supporter of a maniac that vomits words of hatred against America.
We need to send a strong message to all Obama supporter… We love America much to much to support Obama..
Obama ’s support of Twenty Five years for an Anti American is bad judgement, his lies of his own mother and father about selma is pathetic, his lies of the relationship with Rezco is incredible, his lie that he never heard his anti American mentor, pastor, friend, inspirational leader of Twenty Five years is just another lie. I say send a strong message that we are not
going to support a supporter, friend, mentor of a Anti-American Jerramiah Wright!
Bob Casey, shame on you for supporting Obama an anti-American Supporter, What happen to the oath of loyalty????? I guess a nicer position is more important!

Comment by VoteResponsibly08

You really have to be an idiot to believe anything Obama the supporter of an Anti-American for Twenty Years, and now out of desperation he lies to the American People by saying on the view he would reject this’s amniac words and he would have quit the church. What kind of judgment does Obama have to have stayed in this church of hatred towards America for Twenty Years.

I am amazed of how Casy the congressman could have supported Obama.. How can any American that loves America support Obama who has supported Wright, Farrakhan??
What has happed to the love of america, the loyalty towards America???
That this maniac of a reverand says God”D” America and a wanabe presient of the usa overlooks this statement if beyond me. Why would anyone support Obama? Why? What change? He has brought us back 50 years!!! He has started a division of all time. There have been many presidents tht the delegates have supported and have won over any an all and no one has ever suggested there would be a riot, the meida has said this… I wonder why?
Arn’t you people tiered of all this hatred Obama has brought us into?

Comment by Jamie Turner

Maya Angelou is supporting Hillary for President. If Rev. Wright is trying to insinuate that he and Maya are in agreement, it won’t fly.

There’s no alleged racist or genocidal acts, these acts were actually commited against blacks and native americans. I’m not speaking about the horrors of slavery, I’m speaking of the disparaging treatment of both cultures in the sixties and seventies. Some of these abuses still occur. How can America continue to deny the facts.

I think everyone should know what the name of Shepard, and Pastor stand for: also the titlle
Reverned he and other uses. The Bible mentions the word Revernd one time, in its use as
Refernce..”..HOLY and Reverend is HIS name…speak of God” that is found in the book of Ps.
Also the duty of the Pastor outlined by the Apostle Paul of Leadership and teaching the doctrine
of the Lord.If ANY man preach any other doctrine let him be accursed…Paul said and that
is the Death,Burial and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.NOT about the politics and
country you live in.Wheather I like it or not, Jesus is the one who puts men power. And for His
reasons.

I do not agree with everything Rev. Wright has mentioned in his speeches televised for all to hear and see. But there was alot that he stated was true and hurts to the bone of our American way of life. No, America is not perfect, but we are getting there.
Rev. Wright being a former Marine (I think), would not say what he did not honestly believe to be true. But again, we are not all perfect either.
Speak what you believe to be true. I would love to hear more from Rev. Wright.

Comment by Flip Parker

It surely is a sad day when people praise Jeremiah Wright after all this hate has come out. America’s people are falling into the cultural sewer of evil more and more every day.

The saddest part of it all is that many people do not see it or they deny the truth.

What is happening in the world, and this is part of it, is lining up with what scripture says is going to happen in our day.

Comment by Donald J. Siracusa

From what I have read and observed on TV and The Oprah show, Maya Angelou and the Reverend Wright are on two opposite ends of hate talk, predjudice and all that Wright thinks is evil in our country, or maybe many millions of succesful black American citizens including Maya really do not know they are in the best country on this planet. As Bob Marley says in one of his songs about Black People, ” WE HAVE TOO FREE OUR MINDS”. That is where the real problem is in the hate full minds of people like Wright and those and many races that have prejudices toward others.

Simple Fact: Obama is a closet Racist

Comment by GIM, So. Fla.

What I find troubling is not that there is RACISM in the U.S. …(that is a given)…but that the people who are most vocal and willing to ruin careers over perceived racial insults are the very ones who are the most unified in supporting and protecting their own RACE BAITER when he comes under fire.

Do these people understand the meaning of the word hypocritical?? Do they not realize they lose all credibility on the race issue by not calling Rev. Wright what he really is?? A Black RACIST. …or do they think racists only come in one color??

Obama has done more to harm racial relations by being an “apologist” for Rev Wright…and asking us examine the man in his “context” (as he has done for twenty years)…than by showing us with his actions how racism should be handled. Or will Obama stand behind the next White Separatist and ask us to examine him in his context also??

RACISM is a real problem in the U.S. but in order to even discuss it that discussion MUST be approached HONESTLY.

Comment by Controlfreak

Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the same views that most Americans have about other races. The difference is he speaks about it. But white America speacks racial comments behind closed doors. Double standard.

Comment by Rev. John F. Hicks

I rode the back of the bus (many times) in 1956, as a young airman in Biloxi, Mississippi. I walked out of a restaurant in Mobile, Alabama, because they wouldn’t serve a black buddy of mine. Numerous times while I served in Texas, I would purchase food at local drive-in’s for a black friend who was hidden somewhere in the car. Why? Because racial prejudice is wrong regardless who practices it. In fact, it is a sure sign of stupidity!

As a minister of the Gospel of Christ, it is incumbent on my calling to preach the love of Christ; not the racial hatred of man. I do not condemn Rev. Jeremiah Wright for his racially intolerant and prejudiced viewpoint, however, I do criticize him for using God’s pulpit to spew it out in sermon form. I, for one cannot accept the rhetorical view that “sound bites” are being used to judge Rev Wright. His own words are his judge. Any man who claims to be called of God to help the poor; encourage the oppressed; feed the hungry, ad infinitum, needs to be preaching the love of God, not hatred. Barak Obama is guilty by assiociation, simply because Christians are responsible to God for what they see, hear, and do. In twenty years he had to know what was being preached.

Comment by Constance Geisenderfer

Rev. Wright has the right to go wherever he wants in this country, but I’m shocked that first he was invited and secondly that he was given a standing ovation on arrival at the church. His diatribe from the pulpit is/was appalling. He’s free toleave this country if he so wishes.

What a disgrace for a “man of God”! I wouldn’t let him come to my barn and speak to our goats unless he repeted and was Born gain.

I Hope the Journalist used the word Incorrectly Benediction…. Because to a Catholic this is one of the Most Devout Acts you can attend to Praise Christ in The Exposed Monstrance! a Non Sanctioned person like a Non Catholic shouldn’t be giving Homolies only Deacons and priest are permitted in our Church….

Clapping … Hooting and Hollering just isn’t proper in a Catholic Chuch and Singing Happy Birthday in Gods House is very Sad! God Should always get Top Billing..

Maybe they all got introduced to amd Prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Novena… That can surely help change their hearts! Especially with tomorrow being Divine Mercy Sunday!

The man is a true hypocrit as are the members of the entire church. Let a white pastor make the comments this man did and there would be riots in the streets.

Comment by W.Sharrett Sr.

Could it be that the Rev. Wright is considering a new life and conversion to the real body of Christ?

Comment by Belvie Douglas

A lifelong liberal, I would never condone Rev. Wright’s racist, separatist teachings.

However, I do value LOYALTY so I wonder…..how does Wright feel about Obama trashing him and leaving him without a pulpit and nowhere to go because he is “too hot to handle”.

Is he waiting for a reward from “President Obama”? Is that what Americans want? To have as a leader and a top visitor at our White House this blatantly prejudiced hater of white people?

Wright is a hateful racist….Obama is a hateful racist AND DISLOYAL to the people in his life - his Mentor…his GRANDMOTHER……..his MOTHER (READ HIS BOOK)……….

He only seems to be “loyal” to a Kenyan father who abandoned him at age 2 and saw him only once after that when he was around 10……

THIS IS SCARY, FOLKS…..THINK ABOUT THIS AND WHAT IT MEANS…………………………..

Did Rev. Wright receive a ‘raucous standing ovation” for being a Man of God who teaches “W W J D” (What Would Jesus Do?) or for being a “Racist” and they are darn proud of him for it?

Comment by all4him

I have found thru watching some so called Christians living in the world, that we have to go back to the Word for the truth. Just because a person(s) has Rev. or Brother or Sister or Bishop or father in front or behind your name, spouting what they perceive as the truth, doesn’t make it so. God the Father makes the truth known, and the fakes are being exposed for the church to see. May we all have the decerning eye of the Spirit of truth to make it thru these sad days ahead. God’s heart is breaking and so is mine.

Comment by Alex Matlin

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright got a raucous standing ovation… If Barak Obama did not decide to run for president of the United States, he would also have been among those, standing and applauding.
Now Obama has condemned remarks from Wright, as he has never known what his beloved reverent is up to.

I can’t see why this is news. The man is a dynamic and beloved public speaker and religious leader in addition to being an “alleged” racist and conspiracy nut. If every “alleged” racist and conspiracy nut made headlines when they made a public appearance you would have to dedicate the whole news website to it. Speaking of which, did Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, or Louis Farrakhan speak anywhere yesterday?

Why should American supporters be surprised by this visit and reception? After all, the people who love America were evidently not in the audience. There is nothing new about the racist black liberation theology that preaches hate and victomology. There is no wonder the corporations are moving out to more friendly nations.

Comment by Martha A. Durham

How did Rev. Wright get his degrees from a country he hates? The new Pastor is just as consumed with hate at Rev. Wright is. Isn’t it always better to blame some one else for your own actions!

I am white and just as proud of it as you are of being black. This is how it should be. My mother was an indentured Orphan Train child born in Manhattan who was sent to Texas when she was 3 1/2 years old on one of the “Orphan Trains” ferring thousands of children out of NYC. She was taken out of school in the 3rd grade to pick cotton in East Texas. I have her indentured papers to prove this and she never hated anyone or blamed anyone for anything! You will never get ahead as long as your head is screwed on backwards as you dwell on your past.

A nun who was my teacher in high school told her class this: “If you want to blame someone for the color of their skin you must blame God for He made all of us.”

Hate will wither your soul!

Comment by Colin Comi

Bigot. Should be relegated to the scrapheap of history.

Comment by Buzz McManus

I happen to be a practicing Catholic and I feel Rev. Wright may preach the gospel but God’s message has been lost on the good Reverend. God preaches love and forgiveness. Rev. Wright’s messges are downright disgusting to any normal person and takes back the cause of racial equality 100 years. His message does not unite people it excludes them with hate and bitterness. I was taught to respect our elders and those with titles such as the Reverend. But in Rev. Wright’s case I care not to do either.

Rev. Wright is not a celebrity but maybe he should start a new church in Hollywood, maybe the liberals could make a few movies and write a few books thus dividing the population even further.

Dear Greta,Iam a female R.N. who is heartsickened over the teachings of Obama’s ministerand the anti-american sentiment that exists among the left wing of the democratic party that has been supporting him ,endorsing him, and covering for him.It does not look good for the USa to have him on the presidential ticket. He should not be allowed that privelege. Thank-you for the work you have done on this and for being our voice. More needs to be done on this before he gets the nomination and maybe even the presidency that should be reserved for people much more deserving of this status.
The other cable channelsare not giving any information on this which only leads me to beleive that they are corrupt. God Bless You Greta and our U.S.A.

How he could have received such a warm reception shows the ignorance of some Americans. He stands for racism, hate and he is anti-American and yet people still embrace him. Too many people drinking the Koolaid. I guess it is relativly easy to get people to follow blindly and I guess that is why we have so many hate groups and cults that thrive in America. Why anyone would invite this cretin into their church is beyond me. This guy has called upon God to damn America. He incites racial hatred. It’s amazing that Sen. Obama considers this fool to be his spiritual advisor. I think it speaks volumes about Obama’s character.

Comment by Kyle from Indiana

What kind of American hero is this guy? Shouldn’t we all be coming together as one, and stop all this negative talk about other races. Deep down we all no his views no matter how he tries to skirt the issue. I wonder why his sermons never have any other races attending. Can’t we all just get a long?

Should Americans now denounce that Catholic church and denounce Maya Angelou because the members of this congregation and Maya Angelou are not guilty by association???
Good luck insulting Maya Angelou. She is one of America’s best writers and deserves the notoriety she has received…

I wonder where Rev. Wright has been. I’ll bet laying low in the Caribbean..maybe St. Thomas. The TUCC has a ministry called “The Caribbean Connection” to teach people about the cuisine, people, countries etc. It would be interesting to know if the church ownes resorts in the Caribbean. I wonder how many of the poor congregants have taken advantage of a Caribbean vacation. I’m getting the impression this TUCC is more of a business of Rev. Wright’s where he can hide assets and not pay taxes. Maybe the IRS will look at this.

Comment by Chris

There is a double standard that exists today. For a white person to have said what wright said that person would have been called a racist and thrown out to the wolves. Everyone should be held accountable for their actions. Reguardless of race, gender. I think that Rev wright is a person that is blessed and has a calling but sometimes our on demons, past experiences or lust for power blind us to gods word. Wright does have angry and resentment in his heart, and till he deals with that issue he will not be as effective and useful for gods plan as he could be. DONT LET CHAINS BIND YOU, BECAUSE IF YOU DO YOU NEVER WILL BE TRULY FREE.

Comment by kathy flammer

I will leave the Roman Catholic Church if this is acceptable. Rev Wright is a bigot and not welcome in my church.

Comment by Mary J. Meeker

Greta, I would like to see you delve into the life of the G.D. Rev.(WRONG) Wright. Obama has had such a free ride during this political coverage it is time to find out how he really feels about America. I do not think he is the person to be elected to serve as President of these United States.

Comment by Don Mutassa

I hope the Cardinal Archbishop calls this priest in for a little chat about his choice of guests at his pulpit.

Comment by ALICIA TRAWICK

This man (Wright), I will not call him Reverend, is a disgrace to ALL CHURCHS AND TO ALL RACES. His hatred is dangerous and evil. His sermons should be XRated so that children are not allowed to listen to his poison. Anybody that has to spew out vile like this in a public forum (especially behind a pulpit), has only one agenda, - to be an exibitionist and there are other distorted career paths that would fit him rather well to feel the need of his self-absorbent role. You really have to pity people like him but what is scary is that they can infiltrate there agenda into others and the very fact that he can be the spiritual advisor of a man that is running for president of the (UNITED & NOT THE BLACK STATES OF AMERICA) is a very malignant disease that can spread over into our government!!!! If Obama is hearing this poison on a regular bases and then is elected by the people to be one of the world’s major leaders, this cancer will then be in it’s very critical stages and the whole world is at danger. THIS IS NOT A MAN OF GOD, he is not a spiritual guru, he is not an intellectual advisor - he is (simply) a distraction and thrives in dissention. Common sense tells you that this much hate is destructive. History dictates it. Have we not had enough of these agents of destruction. THEY ARE THE TERRORIST WITHIN! The oxymoron here is that I have to be careful in this email not to offend but Wright had public & popular approval & received payment in doing so.

Why is the Rev. Michael Pfleger, Saint Sabina’s pastor .. not a priest at a Roman Catholic Church?
Are you sure this is a Catholic church?
And, I’m wondering how many black churches in this country are racists? I don’t understand why people can applaud a man who is an open racist.
Racism is a terrible thing and I haven’t lived the life of a black person in this country, but I have friends of many races including black and I just can’t for the life of me understand why it is okay to be racist. I would not applaud a white man who stands up and puts down ANYONE! Why are these people standing by this man? How does M. Angelou feel about this?

Comment by Suey

Comment by Tom Wisconsin

The pastor is obviously free to go where he wants and say what he wants. That’s not the issue. The issue is that he’s Obama’s “spiritual advisor” and with that relationship now set in stone, Obama will not win the White House. Period. The fact that the pastor received a loud standing ovation says a ton about those people and the fact that they could welcome an unrepenting man who damned most of the races in the U.S., the country itself and even allowed terrorist groups to contribute to his church’s bulletin.

Comment by Brady Duren

The question we are all left with is: Who is really for the future of America and its people? Are we involved with people who want to make emphasis on poor verses rich, or race, skin color and culture which all four are different from each other.

Then considering that the three presidential possibilities have to be actors who can speak more on their feet than thinkers who plan to guide our world and its future, plus the presidency now being purchased with millions of advertisements while the economy goes down farther, I conclude, that we Americans who are so quiet and enjoy daily life, are about to ride on a political ship that is sinking, regardless who is the president.

Comment by amber goodson

It is disgraceful that Rev. Wrights remarks are being downplayed and justified by his supporters. Many of those supporters being the same people who called for the head of Don Imus. WHAT A JOKE HE MADE THEM.

Wright should be thrown into jail for treason and sedition. All the pastors that speak (tax Free) in public places about damning or hating this country should be jailed. It is in the constitution. Maya and Oprah have some explaining to do after getting the benefits of this country. Keep our country strong. These people are weakening us.

Comment by Veritas

Wright is exactly why we still have hatred toward the different races in this country. People like Wright keep stirring the pot for their own welfare and have no consideration for improving racial tensions. In fact, as long as they can keep the races divided the better it is for them. It sure isn’t helping the rest of us though. I am sick and tired of hearing about racial issues. I have been to many schools with rich and poor people of all races and know there is opportunity in this country, If They Take It. And I mean opportunity not affirmative action or putting them ahead of others. They can get it on their own, just like white people. So for all of you Wright supporters, take a closer look at what you can offer America and maybe we can get over some of these problems. We aren’t going to do it when the Wrights of the world keep stirring the pot and agitating our citizens.

And the congregation met after the service to fill glass bottles with gasoline and stuff rags into the tops???

The whole Democrat Party is giving America a glimpse into how capable they are, as a Party, to run the economy, medicine and foreign affairs. They can’t even do their own Primary.

But, we must recognize that a lot of black congregations have been raised on Anti-american hate. That realization explains a lot to me. Obama is unfit.

Let us not forget when Bush W was running not just for governor of Texas but also for president he had alot of baggage on his head that the paid for media refused to exposed 24/7 as they do with Obama’s ties to Pastor Wright and that of any little bit Hillary does wrong or a mistake. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. These so called conservatives gave us the goose (”Thing” aka Bush) we will give them the gander… hopefully Hillary! Go Hillary!!!

Was he wearing an “invisibility” cloack like Harry Potter and Obama did not see him or hear him?

What a disgusting thing for a Catholic Pastor to do !Why Pfleger’s superiors don’t punish him is beyond reason . As a combat veteran of World War Two , and a Catholic I vigorously protest the actions of this Priest and the traitor he welcomed to a Catholic Sanctuary .

i was so happy to read that rev. wright wet to Chicago church when invited. The Main news medica is the ones that don’t understand the black churchs. And they keep up the furor because yheir is racism on their part. They say this is not true but as a black senior female i see it often.I say to Rev Wright thank God that someone tells the truth about our America yes I said our America. We have had to fight for evertyhing we have. Again Obama is the person that should lead the USA

I can not believe any Catholic church would invite such a figure as Rev. Wright to give the benediction. As a Catholic, I am appalled to see a person who is full of racial and cultural hatred allowed to speak within a faith system which I have attended and supported. Our church and faith does not exemplify nor encourages Rev. Wright’s thoughts or philosophy and we should not show any association with it … as a matter of fact we should denounce the man for what he is.

I for one will take my complaint to the diocese and will assure them if Rev. Wright ever shows up in my church, not only will I stand up and walk out right then but will seriously consider changing my faith.

As a Christian, if Rev. Wright was such a fan of Angelou, he should have been invited to “attend” the services but never been given a role during the service.

“The smiling Wright accepted an invitation to give the benediction at the Roman Catholic church but did not address the furor over his past sermons”.

I wish you had mentioned the name of the Roman Catholic Church that invited him to give the benediction! As a Roman Catholic I resent the implication that our church would accept and condone by inviting the Rev. Wright, the remarks made by him.

Oh my goodness, now we are hearing Rev. Wright visiting this chicago church, and he gets a standing ovation. If you are a racist or liar in this country, you get a standing ovation. Is there something wrong with this picture?? I hope that all the christians in this nation will definitely be praying about this election for 2008, and that Obama will definitely be more and more exposed for who he is and what he is. He definitely does not know the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Lord. The speech he gave on christiantity was full of humanism. Americans definitely need to pray about who should be our next president.
