Clinton Camp Furious Over Strategist’s Meeting With Colombian Officials on Trade Deal

Border

Sources in the Hillary Clinton campaign told FOX News Friday that staff “outrage” is hitting a boiling point over senior strategist Mark Penn’s meeting Monday with Colombian officials to discuss passage of a trade deal that Clinton vehemently opposes.

Penn has apologized to Clinton, who knew nothing of the meeting until it was revealed Friday in The Wall Street Journal. Sources said Clinton discussed the matter directly with Penn and expressed displeasure.

“The meeting was an error in judgment that will not be repeated and I am sorry for it. The senator’s well-known opposition to this trade deal is clear and was not discussed,” Penn said in a public statement.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Penn met Monday with the Colombian officials as part of his job as chief executive of the lobbying and public relations firm Burson-Marsteller Worldwide.

Other Clinton officials are furious Penn would divert attention from Clinton’s campaign to curry favor with the Colombian government on behalf of the free trade deal. One chief concern is that Penn’s meeting conflicts with Clinton’s statements denouncing Colombia for using violence against union organizers.

“It makes me sick to come here hour after hour and fight for this campaign while Penn is off doing something that hurts the campaign and makes him a bunch of money,” said one aggravated Clinton loyalist.

Penn’s campaign position, however, seems secure.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said earlier Penn’s meeting does not reflect the campaign’s stance on Colombia.

“Sen. Clinton’s opposition to the Colombian trade deal remains pretty clear,” he said. Penn’s “meetings were not in any way on behalf of her campaign. … It does not affect her opposition whatsoever to the trade bill.”

Both Clinton and Barack Obama oppose the Colombian trade deal. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe earlier in the week called Obama’s opposition the product of “political calculations.”

The Colombian government is trying to secure congressional passage of the agreement signed in 2006 by Uribe and the Bush administration. According to Justice Department filings, Colombia last year agreed to pay Burson-Marsteller $300,000 to help “educate members of the U.S. Congress and other audiences” about the trade deal and secure continued U.S. funding for the $5 billion anti-narcotics program Plan Colombia.

In economic terms, the deal would largely open up the Colombian markets for American goods without many of the duties that now exist. Colombia is already able to send most products to the United States duty-free, but the deal would cement that preferential access.

Penn has come under criticism for other Burson-Marsteller clients, including tobacco giant Philip Morris and corporate clients accused of union-busting activity. While Penn says he does not personally work on any accounts that could be construed as anti-labor, labor leaders including Teamsters president James Hoffa have publicly expressed concern about his involvement with the campaign.

Penn’s political consulting firm, Penn, Schoen & Berland, has been paid $10.8 million so far by Clinton’s campaign.

It seems like all Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama seem to continue to do is find reasons for themselves or their associates to apologize. Does America really want a person holding the highest office in the land that is going to have to keep apologizing over and over again? The mistakes made by Clinton and Obama will only continue to grow. One of the many reasons the mistakes have been made is because of them both lacking the experience needed to lead America.

Hillary wants to “unify” the country when she cannot even unify her party. The same goes for Obama. Neither one of these individuals is ready. They have good ideas but want to go about them in a wrong way. The ways they want to do things once was known as a little thing called socialism. They are both so far out of touch with reality and need to get themselves in check to stand any chance against McCain come November.

Does anyone believe that she is against this trade agreement especially with how hard she pushed NAFTA early in her husband’s first term?

This, like all trade agreements, will eventually have to go through Congress and then to the President for their signature. With him working for the lobbying firm that is pushing this trade agreement as well as working as the top strategist for the Clinton campaign, can anyone believe that she would not sign it if God forbid she does become President?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against trade, I am against unfair trade agreements that leave the US worker at a disadvantage.

What terrorists need: who?
Let’s see, the terrorists don’t appear on TV or the rest of the Media directly, they use the logistic in situ, exactly what pro-FARC terrorist guerrilla Hugo Chavez is doing, repeating Fidel Castro’s made in USSR plan. Anybody who help them on American or any other country’s soil is a terror logistic.
WMD? Israel BOOOMBED a Sadam’s N U C L E A R reactor already:
The anti-American dems have always been what the enemies need. About 1 decade ago, Israel launched an air attack against a Sadam’s NUCLEAR REACTOR. There still the ruins as a silent monument of SADAM’s WMD PLANS to any self-programmed anti-American, and as a proove of the war on terror.
Also, Sadam was the Hugo Chavez on the region, paying (not sure the ammount) like $30,000 for the family of any suicide bomber against Israel or any other “enemy” of the terrorists.
I can’t believe there still terror logistics in situ USA saying Sadam wasn’t related to terror on the region.
The terrorists even fight between them for oil power, that’s why Iran and Irak whent to war for 10 years, and became friends on 2003 “suddently” (Iran kept Sadam’s air force for protection), they fight, they reconciliate, they are terrorists).

Let us reflect back on Mrs. Clinton’s words in OH.

“I don’t think people should come to Ohio and tell the people of Ohio one thing and then have your campaign tell a foreign government something else behind closed doors,” Clinton said then. “That’s the kind of difference between talk and action and that I’ve been pointing out in this campaign.”

“I would ask you to look at that story, substitute my name for Senator Obama,” she also said. “If some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments and basically saying ignore what I’m saying because it’s only political rhetoric … I think it raises serious questions.”

After hillary’s lie about Bosnia, how can anyone believe that she has nothing to do with the meeting that her strategist made with Columbia. If her campaign workers do these sort of things behind her back, how is she going to legitimately control her administration if she pulls a curious george and steals the Presidency? I wouldn’t doubt if hillary was behind it, after all, her first lady papers discuss how she was pro NAFTA and made the closing arguments FOR NAFTA, saying that it would benefit our economy. Now look at the repercussions that NAFTA has caused. I don’t like george w, and never have, but our depressing economy is not all of his fault. It took this long for the negative repercussions of NAFTA to show itself.

Say what you will about the Clintons, they seem to be very loyal to old associates, even when those associates are not helping them at all–like Penn, who has probably been the poorest planner of this campaign. This is a golden opportunity to get rid of him, but will she put forgiveness over poor performance? Obviously the public doesn’t like this trait.

Re: Wall Street Journal and Huffpo
So there you have it — the person running a major American presidential campaign is simultaneously on the payroll of a foreign government pushing a bill that the next president would have to confront. And what’s truly telling about this is the part about the Colombian government not knowing whether Penn was representing the Clinton campaign or his business clients. Put another way, the two interests are apparently so similar, there’s almost no discernible difference — even to the foreign government lining Penn’s pocket. Clinton for President is the same thing as Burson-Marsteller for President, with Mark Penn as the Secretary of State-in-waiting.
Go Obama!

Comment by Anthony

Penn is more involved with the Clinton campaign than the guy who spoke to the Canadians. In fact Penn is getting paid lost of money as an adviser. This is highly suspicious. When you put this logthere with the stories Hillary been spreading arounf. It points to how untrustworthy she is. We can’t Trust her as President.

Comment by Marc

Mary, you need to do some reading. Explain to all of us why did they say it was Obama who called Canada when it was actually the Clinton’s. Explain why people have to leave Upstate NY because of the false promises that Hillary gave them. Please explain why is Hillary talking to blue collar workers when she has made over 110 million dollars from 2000-2006. I am waiting to see what you have to say Mary.

Comment by itzmeok

Clinton appears to be getting undermined left and right by her own campaign staff… so, if she wins the election (which seems less likely every day), what kind of shenanigans do you expect to see from the cabinet she selects. Her husband alone indicates she’s a bad judge of character… her staff just keeps confirming it.

It’s so hard to find good help these days…

Hey—-Mary—-why should the media not jump on Billary? She is the one that approves her advisors. I would think that if I was going to call someone one of my advisors I would at least want to meet them and make sure they are on the same page as I was. Pretty simple to me. Mary, if you have time could you please show me the panic bottom is…or did you mean to say button….LMAO! If either Osama or Billary get in office I am going to want to know where to find it…the button that is.

Mary,

Your comment to Ron was interesting … I certainly hope you will keep that frame of thought as regards Obama’s Pastor’s comments, or even Dick Cheney’s actions as relates to George Bush.

Very tolerant and balanced of you …

Comment by Brian

Mary, give Ron a break (even if he can’t spell), and catch a clue about Hillary while at it. Hillary is not fit to be POTUS. She has never successfully led ANYTHING. She’s power hungry and only ACTING moderate because she knows being honest about her views would eliminate any chance she has of ever getting near the White House again. Just check out her whole life and the kinds of causes and messed up thinking she has repeatedly stood for (until she realized a flaming Liberal couldn’t get anywhere in national politics). Someone with her past as Commander in Chief…tell me you are KIDDING!!! Check out the shady deals in Arkansas and those surrounding her when she served as First “Spouse” (this constitutes the lion’s share of her purported “leadership experience,” by the way). Obama? unproven as a leader and not much better than Hillary at thinking if his campaign stances are any indication. The only fit Commander in Chief left in the race is John Mcain. Wise up folks, Vote McCain!!!

Comment by Ron Seattle

Penn has been one of the most vicious commentators against Obama since all this negative campaigning started. My question to any Hillary supporter is why does Hillary have people like this surrounding her as consultants? It truly shows ” the ends justicies the means” of her campaign. VERY POOR JUDGEMENT FROM HILLARY. I would be up at 3 AM panicing thingking that Hillary was at the helm during any crisis.

This week we find out her Campaign Manger was on a sub prime Board and now Penn, a “senior” adviser is talking trade, in spite of her stupid call for a “time out”. It appears that her crew no more believes her than we do….In Canada we would have punted her long ago..even for City Council….

So this guy Penn is a Senior Stratigist for the Clinton campaign, but he is also a LOBBIEST, not just a lobbiest but a chief Executive for a Lobbying firm. My Gosh I thought that was a great cardinal sin. Haven’t they been blasting McCain for having lobbiest on his campaign payroll? Seems the Liberal double standard just keeps on turning. And My gosh we sure don’t want to think the liberals would be supporting a free trade agreement such as NAFTA Bill Clintons baby.

Comment by Rob Sherwood

Mary - they jumped all over Senator Obama for the lie that one of his aides spoke to the Canadian government about NAFTA - don’t you think they ought to jump all over Senator Clinton for something her CAMPAIGN MANAGER DID!!!! Does he represent her or not?

Comment by Lacey

Hillary jumped on this as soon as she found out as the article states. Obama’s advisers have made several mistakes, but he hasn’t fired them. But I love how he demands others be fired for their remarks. If its Obama vs McCain in November, this Democrat will vote for McCain.

Comment by Jeremy Waters

Wow. I know, I know; we shouldn’t bash Hil for something that Penn did. Not her fault, yada yada.

Or should we?

Penn is her Grand Visier over there, for Pete’s sake. Think about this: this is like Condi going to Iran and presenting Ahmedinejad with an award. Think MAYBE we might take umbrage with this and look at Dubya with an expression of “What the HELL?”

Look, if she can’t control her “cabinet” during a campaign, you think her subordinates will follow her policies if she wins? Judging by the folks she surrounds herself with and depends on for counsel, probably not.

The Democratic race keeps on getting more and more ridiculous every day. The candidates are either firing fusillades at each other or they’re punching themselves in the face almost daily. By the time one is chosen all that will be left will be a bloody skull chanting “chaaaaange…. CHAAAAANGE.”

They need to get it together so we can have a real race for the top office. Because right now it looks like Uncle John is winning without firing a shot.

There are truths that are difficult to believe. One of them is, the United States is one of the “most hated” countries in the world. It’s a fact, as sad as it may sound. The enemies of this country seem to be growing at incredible speed. Our politicians do not seem to realize and understand that Colombia is probably the ONLY real friend the US has in this continent. And one of the FEW in the whole world. If one of the democratic candidates is elected president of the United States, we will NOT have any friends in the American continent. None, whatsoever. I wonder if Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama have any first hand knowledge about the Colombian situation or they are acting according what they have “heard” or “read”. Do they even know WHERE in Latin America is that country situated? More so.. have they ever been there??? what’s the Capital of Colombia? Do you think that if someone asked them about these things and and they didn’t have the opportunity to find out or ask anyone… they would know??? No. They would not. They have NO idea. On the other hand, maybe it would be good for Colombia not to have any trade deals with the US, considering the huge recession that this country is about to suffer… or… is suffering already?

RE: Clinton Camp Furious Over Strategist’s Meeting With Colombian Officials on Trade Deal. The Clinton’s are perpetually furious over one thing or another. Is this what we want for “Co-Presidents”? What they are really furious is that someone outed Mark Penn in the same way that the Clinton campaign deliberately outed an Obama advisor’s meeting with Canadian officials prior to the Ohio primaries. They are not outraged that the meeting took place. After it was Bill Clinton who signed NAFTA, not Barack Obama. It was the Clintons, as usual, trying to have it both ways -saying one thing and doing the opposite. Followed by spin, spin, spin! Hillary Clinton has no more integrity than her husband. Neither will ever be accountable for anything - it is always someone else’s false. Is that what we want? Another administration without either integrity or accountability.

After the Ohio primary, the news media reported that a Clinton campaign advisor also met with Canadian government officials prior to the Ohio primary to reasuure them that they should take what Hillary said to the voters of Ohio “with a grain of salt.” Now we have this.

We seem to have “double doubletalk” in the Clinton campaign. First there is Hillary’s and Bill’s usual parsing and doubletalk…and then there is the doubletalk by their advisors and campaign staffers. Trying to figure out what the meaning of “is” is is easier than figuring this out.

It seems that she belives that we have all been sleeping as she was during the bill & monica episode and that americans will just lie down for her lies also, from this Columbia ordeal to Bosnia to her stance on the Iraq war. It s being reported as her desire to do what the people want as it is also with the oboma campaign.I for one [and except for a minute few] would like to see our country continue to be protected and some morality brought back into our NATION . That surely will NOT happen if either of the two are elected due to their well known campaign platform which includes the white flags of war to the embracing of the GAY RIGHTS AGENDA which is indeed contrary to the will of the majority of the people that they pretend to represent. I know we are many and if more people would wake up to the issues insted of voting on the basis of gender or color [DUH] ,by Nov. our numbers will increace and hopefully we can get back on track. THATS ALL FOLKS GOD BLESS….

Fire this idiot! He has made stupid mistakes in campaign strategy and is exploiting Hillary for money. Now he’s undermining her campaign to pick up some more money in Columbia. I can’t understand why he is still on the team.

Yes Hillary, you really do need to fire this guy. How dare he think of himself and what he can gain for his company when clearly it is in defiance of your beliefs on the issue. I would be worried that he would screw up again so please fire him

Furious? LOL! Hillary is sooo furious, that she will not fire him! LOL!! Mark Penn is scum, which doesn’t surprise me that he consults a “Clinton”.

If anyone thinks that Hillary knew about him doing that,,,you’re lying to yourself or not very bright.

Seriously, imagine this woman as President. She doesn’t even know what her employees are doing! And when they screw up in a major fashion, she doesn’t get rid of them!

A different article I read on this said the Clinton campaign had actually donated money toward this endeavor.

I think Clinton did know about this, and it’s just another lie. Penn blew his cover and the press found out about it, so now she has to appear outraged!

LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!

I judge each candidate by their voting record and what they have actually done for America. Hillary Clinton has done a lot of good for Americans and I applaud and support her.

Mark Penn should resign from the campaign. I recognize he has his own firm and was not acting on behalf of the campaign, but given the constant media attacks on Hillary, it was selfish act and the campaign has reason to be angry. Given the money he is making, he should be devoting all his time to the campaign.

I have voted Republican most of my voting life, and I support Hillary. If Hillary is not the dem nominee, then I will vote for McCain.

GO HILLARY!!!

You need help. Its politics and I don’t know who you are supporting, but I can guarantee I can find some problem with him or her. No person is perfect. We should judge politicians on what they get done, and whether it has improved America and American lives.

Also, it is the American dream to work hard and make lots of money. I am in the top percent of this country and I work hard…like so many Americans, including the Clintons. But I also try to help those less fortunate. My success in earning a high income does not make me less capable of helping others.

Show a little respect.

God Bless America.
God Bless Hillary Clinton.

This is another PLOY by the Clinton’s. Another Clinton tactic, just like the NAFTA lie, to make people believe she is innocent in all this. GIVE ME A BREAK. She will do and say anything to make sure that she gets all the votes - whether honest or not. And, she probably does want to make a trade agreement with Columbia anyway.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!
