Former Rep. Bob Barr Forms Exploratory Committee, May Seek Libertarian Nomination

WASHINGTON — Former Republican Congressman Bob Barr says he’s formed a presidential exploratory committee and may seek the Libertarian party nomination.

Barr says in a news release that he told Midwestern political activists at the Heartland Libertarian Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday that the country faces a grave moral crisis and he feels he cannot sit on the sidelines.

The former Georgia congressman left the GOP in 2006 over what he called bloated spending and civil liberties intrusions by the Bush administration.

Barr became a darling of conservatives in the 1990s for his persistent attacks on President Clinton. He was among the first to press for impeaching Clinton.

John McCain has only himself to blame. He’s done zilch to reach out to libertarian voters. He hasn’t even reached out to libertarians in his own party.

He’s got a chance to win libertarians back to his side, if he nominates an exciting libertarian-leaning VP like Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, South Carolina’s Mark Sanford, Michael Steele, John Kasich or Chris Cox.

If he goes for a boring safe pick like Pawlenty of Minn. or someone nobody has ever heard of like Rob Portman of Ohio, he’s toast.

This is a terrible idea. You are going to take votes away from John McCain, and then you will see what a really unconservative presidency will be like if Obama or Clinton win. Please don’t do this. It’s selfish.
