Obama Camp Chides Host Who Called McCain a ‘Warmonger’

Border

Barack Obama’s campaign distanced itself Saturday from a liberal talk show host who called John McCain a “warmonger” while introducing the Illinois senator at a North Dakota campaign stop the night before, after the McCain campaign called on Obama to denounce the comment.

Local talk show host Ed Schultz used the term to describe the Arizona senator while warming up the crowd in Grand Forks, N.D., before Obama’s arrival at the state’s Democratic convention.

“John McCain is not a warmonger and should not be described as such,” Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Saturday. She added, “He’s a supporter of a war that Senator Obama believes should have never been authorized and never been waged.”

The campaign stressed that Obama was not present when the “warmonger” comment was made and that Schultz is not a campaign surrogate.

That wasn’t enough for the McCain campaign, which pressed Obama to personally repudiate Schultz.

“Barack Obama promises a new brand of politics, but today refused to directly denounce Ed Schultz and his vicious smear attack on John McCain. John McCain is committed to a civil debate worthy of the American people and has a record of standing by that commitment,” said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. “Senator Obama must personally and publicly repudiate his campaign supporter’s attacks — rather than give tacit approval to this blatant smear — or his rhetoric of change will be exposed as nothing but words.”

The McCain campaign likens the insult to the language used by conservative radio talk show host Bill Cunningham, who rallied the crowd for McCain in Cincinnati, Ohio, in late February by repeatedly invoking Obama’s middle name, “Hussein,” mocking him as a “hack” and suggesting that as president he’d cozy up to Hezbollah and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. McCain condemned Cunningham, prompting a fierce response from the talk show host.

On Friday, however, Obama thanked Schultz and called him the “voice of progressive radio.” Obama also appeared as a guest on his radio show earlier in the week.

Without realizing Obama’s campaign had commented on the matter, McCain said Saturday afternoon in Prescott, Ariz., that Schultz’ “kind of language is unnecessary for this campaign.”

“I hope that in keeping with the spirit of Senator Obama that they … will condemn such language since it was a part of his campaign,” he said.

After learning about Cunningham’s incendiary comments from advisers after the February event, McCain rebuked and disassociated himself with the talk show host minutes later at a press conference. The presumptive GOP nominee repeatedly has vowed to run a “respectful” race and campaign officials were attempting to draw a contrast between McCain’s quick condemnation of Cunningham’s remarks and Obama’s reaction.

FOX News’ Mosheh Oinounou contributed to this report.

Shame on Obama, he is the one that said personal attacks should be off limit. John McCain has said he plans to run a respectful campaign and has done so thus far, Obama is showing his true colors by allowing such hateful remarks.

Comment by Offended American

If Sen. Obama sticks to his current pattern, he will rebuke these statements about 12 years after Sen. McCain’s second presidential term is over.

I am an Obama supporter and contributer but McCain is right in this case

I f you want to keep troops in Iraq for as long as a hundred years you ARE a warmonger.

You’re right - America deserves better than Obama - while not a fanatical McCain supporter - Obama continues to disregard our Veterans and the sacrifices this country has made for 200 and more years of freedom. He’s not ‘electable.’ Go Hillary or McCain. They have respect for our country’s progress and tremendous sacrifice of our citizens. Obama misses it completely.

McCain don’t count on running a respectful campaign against obama. obama is a self serving racist liberal and will smile while he stabs you in the back. You will need to tell it like it is to beat this pretender.

Comment by Dolores

That’s one of the things wrong about Obama, he expects apologies from everybody mentioning something that he doesn’t approve, but lacks that respect in return. Obama always seems to get away from saying the words “I’m sorry”. He will always, if you notice, make some kind of stupid excuse instead and gets away with just that, an excuse but no apology.

Well O’Babble has been caught again….I would just like to know what Obama
REALLY stands for…..He has ALREADY brought up Racism by staying in that
racist/hatefilled Church…His wife calling this Countrys’ citizens,.. ‘Ignorant
Americans’…..Refused to go live on Fox News…wonder why?????A President
needs more qualifications, such as experience…common sense etc…He only
has looks…Charisma…dancing….In my opinion that does not qualify him
as a potential President. But all his baggage will eventually come out….Staying
in that Racial/Hate filled Church for 20 years and letting his children be exposed
to such hatred, speaks VOLUMES for me about what he really stands for….

Only at Fox News can you get far and balanced coverage of the elections. I agree with John McCain, Obama should condemn the “Warmonger Remarks”. Let’s just see how long it takes Obama’s camp to respond. I bet if no one calls Obama on it, he’ll just sweep it under the carpet. r

Call it like you see it. Anyone that wants the USA to participate in a 100 year war is by definition a warmonger.

Comment by paul lopez

These comments are right on! It only shows Obama’s ignorance of what is hateful when it stares him in the face. He’s not smart enough, or quick enough, to spot, it, hear it, deal with it forthrightly, and be done with it. It has to be pointed out to him! He is not statesman enough to be president!

Comment by Jake

If words are important, then so are their definitions:

warmonger
n : a person who advocates war or warlike policies

Under this definition, McCain is definitely a warmonger.

If McCain can’t brush off Ed Schultz’s remarks, how will he stand up to Al-Qaida?

Comment by Jay

Since when is it considered in poor taste to call a man by his entire name? I refer to Barack Hussien Obama. The man should be judged on his deeds and character. Mr. Obama has proven, at least to me, that he is not Presidential material. But then again, neither is Ms. Clinton. If this is the best the Dems have to offer, they are in real trouble. Worse, if one of them beats Mr. McCain in the general election, then the Republicans are in worse trouble. Hopefully the voting public will come to their senses and listen to Mr. McCain. I do not agree with everything he says but I do believe he will be better for our country than any of the others.

Comment by Chris

I think McCain is a warmonger, maybe Obama should repudiate me too. Rile ‘em up, Fox News!

Comment by Jeff

McCain is right. Making fun of someone’s middle name is JUST LIKE point out that someone would continue the failed hawkish policies of the past. If one candidate wants to stay in Iraq for “a thousand years” after 4,000 troops have already died and the other wants to bring our troops home and has a funny name, OBVIOUSLY I’m not going to vote for the one with the funny name. That’s just common sense.

Comment by Lauren F Hammond

Hillary Clinton for me first and foremost!!! I am a Clinton gal.

But McCain over Obama is my second and dearly held choice. I will not vote for Obama in a million years - he doesn’t know HOW to be a politician hence his shocking Senate records in both the IL and US Senate. And before any Obamabot/Boprah fan tells me I am wrong about his US Senate record - he voted for political expediency, knowing full well he was going to run for the Presidency. So his Illinois record was the one that mattered to em - and he failed to prove himself as a the saviour that so many preach him to be, and agent of change.

Separation of Church and State please - Obama is not the Second Coming and neither should anyone think he is!

A word to sen. Mc Cain..Obama just didn’t hear the words ..so how can he complain about them! He sat for 20 years in a church and didn’t hear his own Pastor.

Mr. Obama merely says he didn’t hear it and it is OKAY…but if he hears anyone who even knows Hillary saying ANYTHING he demands an immediate apology!

I see a problem here…a Congenital Liar and a Person who is either deaf or lacks Judgement or is suffering from a serious deficit in hearing and comprehension! None of those qualities will give much HOPE or SOLUTIONS to the US …

And by the way..Hill and 109 Million and Obama and his wife who gets a triple Raise.. THE REST OF US ARE PAYING FOR THIS???

Comment by Ian Rogers

Why is it that any honest critique of McCains policies is seen as inflamatory, does anyone honestly think that McCain’s political machine will not throw the same trash around if it had the chance? It’s comical how some of the comments say that he was using “hate-filled speech”, then proceed to express there disapproval of Obama with what? Hate filled speech! The percentage of people in this country who are tired of flushing our money and lives and resources down the toilet in this war is large enough to warrant any such criticism. Especially when McCain keeps spitting the same tired gray-haired hawk rhetoric we’ve been hearing for far too long. I guess the answer to my first question is this is FOX News, news for morons with no informed opinion.

Comment by Indy Pendant

Is MCain going to condem the slander coming out of all of you in your public disclosures above?

Comment by Allan

McCain is a warmonger so there is no need to apologize. McCain even “joked” about bombing Iran which was completely inappropriate for a serious Presidential candidate. Your attacks on Obama and his pastor just reflect your own racism that you are in denial about. I doubt any of you rejected and renounced Falwell and Robertson for their hate filled comments after 9-11.

Comment by Frank L Jones

Typical of Obama praise untruthful and distasteful language. Remember how many decades Obama listened to one of his idols Jeremiah Wright - then shouted hallelujah!!

Comment by James M

Oh how cute! McCain must have gotten word that he needs to be warming up for a fight.
You see, the Democrats have been sparring with each other, and quite aggressively. Whoever
wins the nomination, comes out swinging, in shape, in stride. McCain on the other hand, who
has had his party nomination simply given to him without any struggle at all, has already become
soft. He has no sparring partner. He has no training regimen. He’s not in the gym every day.
Both Clinton and Obama are already fighting. Every day. And McCain is already soft.

warmonger Definition war·mon·ger (wôr′muŋ′gər, -mäŋ′-)

noun

a person or agency that advocates war or tries to bring about a war

McCain unabashidly supports Bush’s warmongering. He promises to continue the war. He has indicated a willingness to attack Iran. If the shoe fits.

Comment by john Claus

No doubt Mc Cain is suffering some of the blowback of Bush’s war crimes: Torture, starting an illegal war on the wings of a lie, etc. The chickens are coming home to roost, my friend. We are spending
$12,000,000,000.00 US dlls. per month with money we have to borrow from Red China. Now where is the real threat to our sovereignty. Isn’t it time we woke up.

Comment by Ron

It doesn’t take very long to figure out if these articles are slanted towards McCain or Obama. The writer of this article is definitely pro McCain, as evidenced by the room temperature IQ’s of the pro McCain bloggers. There is a difference between the derogatory remarks made by Bill Cunningham
towards Obama and the warmonger title that Shultz puts on McCain. Senator McCain ( prisoner of war extraordinaire ) was not only for the war but screamed to send more troops to Iraq. What exactly do you think happens when number of soldiers increase during a war ? More people die. This is why the tile of “Warmonger” fits.

Comment by Kane

Just because McCain wants the U.S. to remain in Iraq for a 100 year war, it doesn’t mean that he’s a warmonger. And just because he voted for the Iraq war without reading the NIE, it doesn’t mean that he’s a warmonger. And just because he voted to send our troops to war without the proper equipment, it doesn’t mean he’s a warmonger. And just because and he gleefully sings Bomb-bomb-Iran, it doesn’t mean that he’s a warmonger. And just because he doesn’t know the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni, it doesn’t me he’s a warmonger. And just because he refuses to support the GI Bill for our troops doesn’t mean that he’s a warmonger. What it does mean is that McCain is unfit to be president of the United States of America.

Cunningham’s remarks were intended as a racial smear with a wink. McCain was right to

has no argument.

Comment by Bob

All McCain know is war so it is not surprising he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years and bomb Iran. As far as I can see he is a war monger and he should be called on it by all people no matter their political alignment.

Comment by Gayle

Mr. Obama should renounce the remark. Name calling is the method of the politics of the past which I believe Mr. Obama has spoken out against very publicly.

And Allan, Mr. Obama was going to send in troops to Pakistan, remember? Since Pakistan doesn’t want us there, wouldn’t that be an act of war and therefore, one could ascertain that perhaps Mr. Obama is a “warmonger”.

Both democrats scare the daylights out of me. I want someone I know is reliable and has been around and is not afraid to stand for what they believe in. John McCain is that person.

Obama is a phony, typical politician. Speeches are good, but acts another way. Don’t know why so many people are deceived by his rhetorics.

McCain is trying to spin this as a tit-for-tat thing. The two situations are not equivalent. All other top general have resigned and refused to lie on behalf of the Bush administration. Only Petraeus agreed to lie for them. He is therefore a warmonger.

The greatest thing about America is our political process, where all candidates are spotlighted by the media, and get to answer what their true “heart of hearts” principles, values & beliefs really are, … Then based on their ‘honest’ words, … prior associations, ….past history, … and present actions,…. We get to decide who we think is best for our vision of the Future.

Comment by Karl Al

McCain often denies the truth, claiming in some cases to have opinions opposite to what his voting record, and older public comments have been. Suggesting that the USA may have to stay in Iraq for a Century is warmongering, and there is nearly no other interpretation to put on that remark. McCain would be labeled “flip flopper” if it were not for his consistent hair trigger rage, and his willingness to take drastic action to silence opposition.

Comment by dick van ingen, holland

I remember John McCain appearing very often on CNN in the three weeks leading up to the start of the Iraq war. There was an incident in this period when two men were arrested in southern Turkey near the Syrian border with metal bars in their truck. One suspected that these bars contained uranium and that Iraq was the ultimate destination of these bars. McCain did not question this suggestion at all. He went on and on about it. According to him, it was another fact which showed that the world could not wait any longer. (At the the time there were UN weapons inspectors at work in Iraq.) It was of vital importance that the dictator should be ‘taken out’ as soon as possible.
Everyone who’s interested should study how wars begin. Often any rumor is used to stoke up the fire. McCain certainly played a role in the run-up to this one.
By the way, the charges against the two men were dropped. The suspicions against them turned out to be nonsense. They were set free afterwards.

Comment by Jed Wing

McCain only knows war. He bombed dams, bridges, hospitals and maybe a few military targets in a country that wanted the Japanese out, Chinese out, French out, Americans out. People who just wanted to be free. We supported under the guise of freedom a corrupt bunch of criminals that stripped and raped their country for their own evil lust and greed. Yet McCain thinks we should have “fought for the honor” of these guys.

Iraq is the same deal - the Sunni are fighting because one side - the US backed prime minister and his bunch wants to open their nation to permanent US bases and give the oil to private companies which is the genesis of the problems in the first place in the Mid East going back to Nasser and the real origins of Israel. The other side - the so-called insane cleric Sadr - is nationalist and wants no US bases and wants to control their own resources.

Imagine the temerity of some dark-skinned people not wanting to bend over and spread ‘em for Bush and his corrupt cronies who have made a mockery of our nation at home and abroad and looted the treasure while reaming the constitution that myself and others have fought for.

Jeez. McCain, like Bush, will, in the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. bring the judgment of the lord down on our nation. With McCain, we will continue to be “the greatest purveyor of violence on the planet.”

Vote Obama or get ready to cry for the future of your children. Imagine, American boat people setting sail for a China dominated South America, stowing away on ships for Europe, or just reduced to being a service economy like Jamaica. That is what awaits no matter what names you call me - liberal, commie, radical puke, phony conservative, traitor.

“…More cheese with the whine ?

What logic! We’re all Americans, we’re supposed to be together in this. Democrat/Republican is not the same as Democrat/Al-Qaeda or Republican/Al-Qaeda. We don’t need to stand up to malicious remarks from each other so we’ll be ready to stand up to terrorists. McCain has pledged to run a respectful campaign. He took responsibility and acted immediately in the case of the out of bounds conservative talk show host who mocked Obama. Obama’s people need to be held accountable for their remarks, not have them brushed off. Asking for some R-E-S-P-E-C-T is not whining.

It seem to me Obama is in a catagory of one. He can say anything, and who cares?!The media, if I didn’t know better, I would think most were on Oprah’s payroll, to elect Obama at any cost, so she could have a means to an end of getting Obama to the whitehouse. Msnbc, and cnn act like Obama hung the moon, and Hillary reached up there and jerked it out of the Heaven’s to spite him —- I just don’t get it! —- Why do so many media people want an inexperienced guy, who has not proven himself in the Senate, to get anywhere near the Whitehouse?!—-This is scary stuff folks!!!! — Amanda in Eastern NC.

No one should wonder about the true color of Obama. It has shown repeatedly time and time again what kind of politician he is, an impostor trying to magnetiza the most dumb Americans into believing in him by delivering nice but hollow in substance speeches.Needless to state events to prove his kind;Rezco,Wright,Powers,Rice,Nafta meetings denials,Questionaires,Selma,Ayers connection; you name it and many more while picturing himself as a different and brand new politician but the same kind like Kerry,Richardson,Kennedy,Dashele and many more losers.
I reiterate that our group, all democrats are growing each day who will vote for Mccain or will still write Hillary on the ballot come November if Obama is the nominee. This will not changed and you will be surprise about how mane of us will do it.This is a national campaign also.

Amazing, the arrogant college educated elite Obamaniacs are learning how to use the dictionary to find out the meaning of warmonger. That is a step in the right direction, next they could learn American history and when they do they will cease being followers of the Obama cult and the Demo left. Meanwhile they should check the meaning of words such as demagogue, lier, hypocritical and totalitarian that apply quite well to the Democratic liberal left.

Comment by chris

Obama never heard the reverend say those things, but he’s been going to the church for 20 years. Hmmm, well, already knew he was a liar. Words matter, lies are the worst. Thinking you can get away with lying in this media age… priceless. He’ll probably win, cause as Adam Smith said “nobody ever lost a vote overestimating the stupidity of the American voter”.

Why are liberals so insulting, even on blogs?

Comment by Adam

Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran…warmonger? I don’t disagree. We don’t need a warmonger as president…we’ve had one for eight years. Look where that has gotten us.

Comment by Sherrie

Let’s get real, even if Obama would renounce those comments, he really won’t mean it. I intend to vote for McCain if Hillary doesn’t get the nomination. I know, I know, Hillary stated that we should all come together after the Democratic nominee is selected, but I will not be able to do that if Obama is the candidate. I don’t support the war in Iraq, but I do support our troops, after all they are the reason we have the freedom of choice to vote for whomever we see fit.

Something to think about. Instead of spending billions of dollars on the war, why aren’t we using this money to come up with alternative resources to heat and light our homes, as well as fuel for our vehicles. Wouldn’t the money be better spent by giving American Corporations this money to develop those resources?

Comment by KAQ51

I don’t think that anyone from Obama’s should have distanced themselves or resigned over this comment.

McCain is nothing more than a war monger just like his idol George Bush is.

Of all people you’d think that after McCain went through what he did in Nam that he’d be a lot smarter and more careful about sending our sons and daughters, or continuing to send and keep them in a useless war that is costing this county millions while Americans and their families are starving.

Comment by Jeff

To Bernardo Smith,
Substitue Hillary everywhere in your comment where you have written Senator Obama and you would have an accurate statement, except that there wouldn’t be enough room to list all the scandals and underhanded actions that Hillary and her husband Bill have been a part of. Just look at today’s headlines and let’s see what she does about the latest actions of personnel in her campaign.

How blind are Hillary’s supporters??? It’s really really frightening how oblivious they are to their candidates underhanded and illegal actions, to her “speeches” without any merit, and to the lack of integrity or character of their candidate…… If she committed murder, they would find some excuse or justification for her actions, just unbelievable.

And for your information Mr. Smith, most Democrats and Americans are tired and fed-up with her and her husband and their actions based only in their best interests. When you get a chance take a look at Bill’s support of trade with China and see where that has gotten us today! Keep drinking the Kool-Aid the Clinton’s are giving you, you’ll be fine, honest………as honest as they are, uh-oh you’re in serious trouble…..

It would be the stuff of high comedy if it wasn’t so bloody important to this country. How can some of these nut cases stand to look at themselves in their mirror every day?

Comment by Mike from Texas

Even if Obama was not present at the time the speaker made such comments, his campaign is still responsible. But then again, this is to be expected. His surrogates take cheap shots, while Obama cuts and runs by acting as if nothing happened and extendig an olive branch to his opponents. Lest not forget that it was a surrogate who compared Bill Clinton’s remarks to McArthism, and now this. If it is one thing that erks me is Obama’s unpatriotism, attacking a person who served in our United States defending the very freedoms this yellow belly is now enjoying. And lastly, don’t forget that Obama is running to disarm our country by promising to cut our defense budget. If you think I’m making this up, just do a search in youtube. Ladies and gentelmen, McCain is a patriot while Obama is not. Obama may have wit, but he lacks the wisdom to be our commander in chief. He may be a smart puppy, a Harvard well to do, but he does not know the working class. He does not know what it feels like to work hard. His hands are soft and his nails manicured. The man does not know the meaning of hard labor. He is nothing but an act, an art that he’s mastered quite well. A showman with nothing but smoke and mirrors to cover up who he really is. The office of the presidency is deserves better. It deserves respect. And the person occupying the highest office of these United States should be a patriot, true to the people and responsibilities he so swears under oath, to protect the Constitution and the people of the United States of America. Unfortunately, a man of quilifying dignity has not occupied the Office for some time. Some have come close, but have lost their way. The men or women running and/or occupying the Office should envoke the spirit of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. May God have mercy on us all the day a person is elected and betrays all that this country was founding on.

Guess we can all see who is the MAN of true integrity and honor here. (It sure is not OBAMA)

In addition to the already listed definitions of ” warmonger” as applied to John McCain, the Roget’s Thesaurus includes the noun “jingo”–which describes “a person who professes his patriotism loudly and excessively”. With him, what you see is what you get.

Now let’s define “hypocrite”: “A person who pretends to have desirable or publicly approved attitudes, beliefs and principles he does not actually possess”. Roget’s Thesaurus adds such synonyms as “pretender, con, fake, phony, and poser”. With Barack Osama, what you see is NOT what you get.

Caveat emptor–let the buyer beware!

“Obama’s campaign also notes Schultz is not an official supporter of the campaign and was asked to speak by the North Dakota Democratic Party, not the Obama campaign.”

First of all to compare the two situations is simply ridiculous and continues to affirm the belief that people are so quick to read the surface and are easily swayed into believing whatever is written by the equally biased press…

I think he denounced the comment enough …

To assume any of the candidates at this time in the race would aligne themselves with such words is once again ridiculous ……this campaign stinks of a childlike mentality ……….and Fox news is the bully in the sandbox throwing sand ..

So what is the problem with Obama telling the truth?

McCain is a warmonger. Period. He wants us to stay in Iraq for another one hundred years.

Stating the truth about McCain is patriotic, and so Obama should be commended, not condemned.

McCain is a war hero but not a warmonger. One thing we do know is that Obama is soft on terror. Ed Schultz is an exhibitionist and will do anything for publicity. It is hard for liberal talk show hosts to get attention

Yet one more example of Obama’s double standard and politics as usual approach instead of ‘post partisan politics’.

McCain is a war monger. Call it as you see it. McCain hasn’t moved forward. He is still fighting the war in Viet Nam.

Wanna be President ‘DISRESPECT’

What is a warmonger if not a politician of McCain’s ilk? If the label is offensive, then perhaps we need to come up with another term to describe someone who believes war is the natural state of things, and believes armed conflict is the best way to conduct foreign policy. Shock and awe! Greeted as liberators! Win their hearts and minds! Your with us or with the terrorists! Suspend Habeus Corpus (and with it the Constitution)! The surge is working!
