Jeremiah Wright Sounds Off At Eulogy for Chicago Judge

Rev. Jeremiah Wright told a congregation in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday that reporters sneaked into a private funeral service a day before, in which he blasted America’s founding fathers for slavery and white supremacy and received standing ovations for attacking FOX News for covering his anti-American sermons.
Barack Obama’s retiring pastor delivered a sermon at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, where his late uncle had been the pastor, about overcoming trouble. The public appearance was his first since news broke that the Democratic presidential candidate’s pastor frequently rails on the United States.
“Some troubles that come up in your life come up out of nowhere,” Wright said. At the end of the two-hour-plus service, about two dozen ministers gathered around Wright and his daughter to pray for them. One of the ministers asked God to give Wright courage as “the world tries to demonize him.”
Though Wright said nothing about Obama or the uproar itself, he alluded to the controversy while briefly back in the pulpit Saturday to deliver a eulogy for a late congregant of Trinity United Church of Christ — former appellate judge R. Eugene Pincham.
Wright, who is on sabbatical before retiring from Trinity United, said America’s mistreatment of blacks is the result of the founding fathers, who “planted slavery and white supremacy in the DNA of this republic.”
First reported by The Chicago Sun Times, Wright told mourners at the funeral that Thomas Jefferson, who partook in “pedophilia,” would also be considered unpatriotic these days because he wrote, “God would punish America for the sin of slavery.” He also quoted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who said that the U.S. has a “congenital birth defect.”
Speaking of the seven lessons Pincham taught him, Wright said the judge’s faith “was not the jingoistic, chauvinistic ‘you’re either with us or against us’ demonizing kind of faith.”
“FOX News can’t understand that,” Wright said to rousing cheers and applause. “[Bill] O’Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity’s stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe. [Pincham’s] faith was a faith in a God who loved the whole world not just one country or one creed.”

All of this at a FUNERAL!? This guy is a certified nutcase. Then he goes on to praise Thomas Jefferson for his criticism of Slavery, yet manages to bash him at the same time, and make totally unfounded allegations towards him. Wright needs to get right, sit down, and shut up.
I should think it would be more appropriate for a minister who professes to believe in God to preach about forgiveness rather than hate. Actively hating and dwelling on it will make one ill mentally and physically. I believe that we should ALL concentrate on forgiveness and letting go of hatred. When I go to church I go to worship God and for spiritual renewal to try to live my life as He would want and as He taught.
The title of this article is extremely misleading. Have a listen to the sermon and then make up your mind. I thought the sermon was excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such hate and ranting is not worthy of anyone claiming to be a minister of Trinity UCC, any Christian church or the UCC Denomination. Where is the belief in GOD, Prayer, and Faith about our salvation in Jesus?
Rev. Rant keeps being stuck on Stupid and is going to bring down Obama. He just can’t help himself from spewing hate. He is so into his own personal gratification that he gets from his Kool Aid drinking audience. I bet Obama wishes he could muffle this OLD GOAT!!
Once a racist, always a racist.
So why doesn’t he love people who don’t agree with him? What a hypocrite! Why doesn’t he do like the one he pretends to represent? Love your enemies! What is going to be his excuse at the judgement?
Just like a black man in this county (usa) getting miss understood, and the world.
What an idiot.
So was Jesus “Jingoistic, chauvinistic” or “demonising” when he said “He who sews not with me scattereth abroad.”?
Sure is a weird way to preach a funeral.
Mr Wright is an ill informed prejudice hate monger.
rev. wright is dead WRONG and in the name of God he spreads a hate message. Hell waits for the devils servants and rev.wrong(wright) is speeding down that higway with his followers.
What a pathetic person he is.
He is exercising his freedom of speech. I don’t agree with everything he says. As long as he segregates his message I will have difficulty agreeing. If we will every unite as a nation we cannot continue to segregate. I guess Rev. Wright helps Obama define the definition of bitter. Being bitter is a choice moving forward is a choice also.
Rev. Wright .
Obama Confidant, best friend, mentor and spiritual guide. has taught Obama everything. Has molded and shaped Obama, Has launched his political career. Will always be a very close and personal part of every aspect of Obama’s life.
Everything he believes Obama believes, Every thing he wants Obama wants. Evident by obama’s actions, words, deeds.
It’s a shame that Wright chose a funeral to attack Fox News. A funeral is a place for peace and love. This is so terrible! Doesn’t he have any character and LOVE- is it all hate and making fun of people that are not like him. He rants and raves to scare us into shutting up. He’s a bully and I, personally think…so is Obama.
This man is so bias. He should sit down and shut up. I agree that christians are to love everyone, so I asked what is his problem with America and white people. Yes, we have made alot of mistakes, but take it from me America is still the best place to be.
Christian and Traveler
rev wright. what a joke! he’s everything thats wrong with race relations in america. my suggestion is for fox to simply stop covering his stupid remarks. anyone with an i q over 12 sees this guy for what he is…a racist.
Rev Wright needs to leave the USA and go live somewhere else. He has so much hate in him that he needs to be locked up.
Keep speaking. Just keep speaking.
Hey Rev. Wright !!! This is not FOX News, this is America…. YOU ARE A BIGOT !!!!!!!!
Geez, sometimes I wish this guy would just shut up.
One thing a lot of people don’t realize, and obviously Wright doesn’t, is that when the Declaration of Independence was written, the northern colonies wanted to mention the banning of the slave trade in America. They did not do this due needing to gain the support of the southern states in an effort push the British out of America.
Also, one of our great founding fathers, and president of the Constitutional Convetion, George Washington, freed his personal slaves upon is death in December of 1799 and had the slaves that were owned by his wife freed upon her death. Slavery was a dying cause in early America, and the founding fathers knew it, they just chose to slowly let it fade away. One only needs to look at the 3/5 Compromise in the Constitution to see this. Slaves were banned from importation by the early 1800’s. Early Americans began to see that slavery would die on it’s own. It was far easier and cheaper to pay day laborers to work than it was to buy slaves, feed them, cloth them, provide medical care, and pay overseers that. Don’t misinterpret this as being pro slavery…that is certainly one of the worst institutions this nation has ever had. History lesson over.
If Wright is being mentioned this often in the news for using racist comments, then he is very likely prejudiced against “the white man”. Seriously, let’s get past the color issue. I know all to well it still exists, but I wish people would stop using it as an excuse for all the ills of society. Stop making it an issue all the time.
GUY is a RACIST through and through
I am a devote Christian Minister. This so called Minister is not a true Minister if he has said the slander and garbage that is being reported. Beware of people who tout religion that do not adhere to the Bible and the word of God, for even Satan can deceive people as being an angel of light. This so called Minister has a heart full of hate and bitterness. I shall pray for this individual and God please have mercy on his soul.
Reverend Dave
Houston, Texas
R. Means…. That statement goes both ways…
Spoken like a TRUE CONSERVATIVE wouldn’t you say???
Just another indication of what this guy is about. One would think a eulogy would not be an appropriate place to slam the country that protects his rights to speak such garbage. A supposed man of God should not be using the pulpit to preach hate.
WHERE ARE MY COMMENTS?
Living in hurricane affected Louisiana and while working daily with the public, I have found both white and black americans believe it is time to let it go. Most of us wish he would focus on more important large problems that really do exist, this is no time for hate. Now is the time for all americans to come together as one and for this man ( and ohers like him) to be quiet and turn his attention to america’s youth and helping them.
Reverand Wright, although a supposed learned man, does not have the self-knowledge which would allow him to “let it be” and forgive the mind sets which went with history. He insists on stating that white people still harbor such prejudices….I would think Mr. Obama and other accomplished black people would be insulted by his ideas.
This guy is the gift that keeps on giving for Republicans. Why shut him up? Better the world know who Obama is NOW than in 2009 when he’s being inaugurated.
I hope all America now understands that you don’t have to be white to be a racist, black works too. The “Revs” Wright, Jackson, Sharpton, et al illustrate this fact nicely.
Fox News is the problem not Rev Wright. Everyone knows that Fox News tries to hand feed us this garbage. They have been doing it for years. Wake up America.
Dr. King was a man of principle & great physical courage (e.g., physical/emotional stress: despite being 39 at the time of his death, his autopsy revealed a 60 year old’s heart) who knew that because the US was fundamentally a “moral country”, he could apply the principles of Gandhi’s peaceful “civil disobedience” to right a tremendous social injustice & establish a “colorblind” society. Any other culture would have put a bullet in his head outright, e.g., Tibetans protesting the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Unfortunately, the inheritors of his legacy have taken it to the other extreme & the Rev. Wright controversy has shed light on that festering sore (e.g., black liberation theology). Sunlight is of course the best disinfectant.
This man needs to retire. He is stirring his congregation to divisiveness by his comments.
And to think that Obama sat and listened to this guy for 20 YEARS!!! That’s frightening.
I agree. Let the Rev. Wright continue to talk. He shows you what a true Racist is like. I still don’t think he realizes how much he is bringing Obama down. I can’t wait till the General Election to see how real people view Obama and his friends. Has anyone heard if Obama has attended his church lately? His new pastor is just about as worse as Wright. Fox News is the only news station that has any common sense when it comes to Wright. They tell you the truth about him and I hope they don’t stop. I really don’t see how Obama can get away with what his friend(spiritual advisor) has said. Keep up the true reporting FOX! You’re the only news station that does.
No white person today ever participated in slave owing. No black person alive today was ever a slave.
Trying to assign original sin, or victimization of people alive today, is like hollering “Global Warming” in the midst of a blizzard.
It’s too bad Rev. Wright can’t do something positive with his excess energy.
To turn around a life that’s so often upside down, the individual must first
make an honest inventory of all factors that have caused the trouble.
It’s too easy to blame something outside of us for our troubles,
especially if we do not like what we see in ourselves.
But fixing the blame elsewhere will not make the trouble go away.
this guy is right on the money. in bringing up the history, we provoke the future in new directions.
please america, no more intellectually challenged gun slinging cowboys for rulers backed by cowardice and bibles.
WOW! This guy is priceless. Mortifying thought that he is Obama’s mentor and spiritual leader isn’t it?
Gigi …Great question…I’ve sent a number of replys to various articles but because they are usually directed against Fox News and their “fair and Balanced” reporting they never appear.
Interesting. You’d think the founding fathers invented slavery. Seems like it went on for centuries before that.
This guy really is a nutjob.
Wow! What a great Rev & friend Obama associates with! This guy is a winner… not!! He talks trash about whites & America just like Obama. Two peas in a pod.
It saddens me that the few bloggers on this topic are not listening to what Rev. Wright is saying. I am trying to figure out why you would call him Racist? This man is telling you the truth, open your minds and listen to what he’s saying, I know it’s a “BITTER” pill to swallow but one day you will listen. What part of hate, racist, bigot etc are you getting out of this message, enlighten me, because I don’t understand.
Thank you Fox News, You keep us informed. Rev. Wright states you are the problem because you exposed his hateful rhetoric. I am sure he wanted to continue under the guise of being a man of God, but his facade is now known and Obama’s for that matter.
Rev. Wright is misguided racist who is mistaken on what Jesus Christ truly stands for .
Kudos to FoxNews for telling the truth about this guy. Most of us know that fringe, psychopathic “ministers” like Wright have been hootin’ & hollerin’ in Chicago for decades, spewing all the ant-American rhetoric they can dream up. Thank goodness Obama’s been revealed for the tool of these nuts that he is.
I’m glad that Rev. Wright (right) has told the truth about fox smear network!!!
In the back our minds we all know that Obama is a good man and he will be a Great Leader!
He is the perfect example of disconnected dope!
Jena-6, James Byrd, Shawn Bell, Abner Louima, Columbia University noose, Long Island N.Y. Police Dept- noose, Colorado race riot honoring Hitler’s Birthday.
Reverand Wright( If you can truly call him that) proved through his comments that he is a raciast and truly should be held accountable for his acts of treason toward our contry during time of war. For Obama to sit in this hateful atmosphere for 20 years shows his own character! He wants to be our Commander in Chief! God help US! If the shoe was on the other foot McCain would of been run out of the country.
If Obama somehow loses the Democratic nomination, he can probably thank Jeremiah Wright.
outland - When Obama looses the presidential race this will certainly have been a factor. It is NOT Jeremiah Wright’s fault, however, it is Obama’s. Wright could have stayed out there preaching hatred all he wanted and it wouldn’t have had an effect on the election. It is Obama’s decision to follow Wright, to support Wright, and to spread Wright’s message and base his book on Wright’s teachings that causes concern.
My grandmother was ( she died at the age of 105, her mother 110) was 100% blackfoot native American. They love this country and NEVER cried poor poor me for what the white people did to her mother and father etc. SHe loved THIS LAND!!!!! And to hear this so called MAN of GOD PREACH HIS HATE. Just HURTS my soul. I have had family in all the wars that were and now they defended this great nation. Sure it has had its bitter time in its history , but this is now and these hateful . hateful words cuts this nation and leaves her to bleed. As long as this goes on she will never heal. I nor my family see color we see what is deep in your soul and that is how you take the measure of a man Even though some think it ,Obama is no MARTIN or Bobby or JFK and yet he THINKS he is just watch him walk all I have heard is change that is what I am afraid of what is his change?. As Martin thank you for giving me time.
I thought the sermon was really good and well prepared…I’am unsure what the other listeners heard that garnered the responses above. It seemed they all had preconceived thoughts or ideas concerning Rev Wright prior to listening. None made any comments concerning the direct issues Rev, Wright raised concerning our history. As a black man I was moved and outraged that that this man of God has been treated and demonized by so many fair-minded individuals!
I’d like to ask Mr. Wright if he has ever read the Bible from Genesis to Revelations. Surely not. The Bible is a book written by men inspired of God and is full of wonderful treasures. If he would read and study Gods Word he would learn, among other things, that God teaches us to do good to those who despitefully use us and to pray for our enemies. If he thinks white people are his enemies because of the slavery trade in the past, then he needs to have his church pray………..not teach them to hate. A person who lives in the past never has a present.
He has to be one bitter and miserable man.
Rev Wright get bent, I am a Dem and an American and I love all of it good and bad. You leave a bad taste with anyone attach to you. My husband fought in Iraq for everyone not just whites, Rev Wright you need help. Go Bill Orielly stay on him.
The United States did not have a perfect beginning. I don’t know of any society with an unblemished history. Mr Wright talks about exposing our history. We have not hidden from our history. On the contrary, we have confronted it head on.
The beauty of our country is that we have learned from our mistakes and continue to do so, and we stive to constantly improve as a society. While still not perfect, we have one of the most diverse, tolerant and progressive societies on the face of the planet. I prefer to live in the present, not dwell on past wrongdoings. To do so will serve nothing more than to stir up old hatreds and prejudices. For this reason, I serioulsy distrust Referend Wright’s motives.
Yes we had slavery, but we abolished slavery. Yes, even today, we have remnants of prejudice, bigotry and racism, and alas, may always have a percentage of our society that harbors such thoughts. Mr Wright’s forcus should be on how far the United States has come since its inception. God Bless America. Two hundred years in the making - and still progressing
Wright is right. I know we don’t like the ugly truth but, as a true conservative, Caucasian in appearance and Northwest European mutt in ancestry and as a clergy person, I know truth often-times is ugly, it hurts and its voice often grates against our conscience. But he is correct and that church was correct in rallying around him. People, we are letting the press tell us what is important, now they tell us that we should judge a candidate, not on the content of his character or the content of his ideas, but on the words of his or her associates. Have we become such sheep that we cannot recognize the McCarthy-ism, the Salem witch trials, inherent in the press today? It’s a terrible parody of what the press should be. Vote for/against Sen. Obama based on his ability to enact policy that will improve our nation will raise the level of the public square out of the gutter, and consider Sens. McCain and Clinton under that same light. Evaluate their ideas for a future, not the words of someone else.
Rev Wright is more of a threat to the set-back of racial harmony in our country than anyone in the last 40 years. My concern for Mr. Obama is that in sitting under his tutorship for 20 years is that he must agree with many and most of Mr. Wright’s philosophies or he would have long ago left. I do not want a President who has such a tutor.
wright is rightweather u like it or not posterity will judge, there some things you dont use against pple especially men of God,you have succeeded in bringing shame to the christian dom[fox news]because of cheap political gain, but one thing i will assure you is that you can never forgive yourself by making a story out of that because it was highly blasphemous.anyway the whole world is watching the progress in america, pls lets us do it right so that others can learn learn from us rather than assasinating characters.
“comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe. [Pincham’s] faith was a faith in a God who loved the whole world not just one country or one creed.” The question is, will Reverend Wright practice what he preaches?
Ok Wright, who do you love? It’s not white America or a white man is it Wright. Well, maybe one that is porrer than you are, eh?
Scott, those were not “Salem witches” that the Russians placed in Cuba, just 90 miles off our
Florida coast, in 1961. They were nuclear warheads. In his memoirs, Nikita Khrushchev said
that Russia owed a great debt of gratitude to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for the fact that they
helped provide the technology to enable Russia to possess the atomic bomb. In 1943, an American colonel placed wiretaps which recorded correspondences of Roosevelt and Truman staff members with Moscow. The correspondences of Harry Dexter White, Alger Hiss, Harry Hopkins, Julius Rosenberg, and many others were documented. These documents were declassified and released in 1995, as “the Venona Papers.” When folks speak the term
“McCarthyism,” with sort of a snarling, growl, maybe they also should say “the Venona
Papers” the same way, because they now prove that ol’ Joe was right on the dot!
“Reverend” Jeremiah Wright with all his rantings has departed from he call of a Pastor let alone a minister of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christian faith speaks to forgiveness rather than keeping counts of wrong doings. The sound of the bitterness that is in his soul is the outward evidence that he neither loves His brethren let alone the true gospel that Jesus preached. As mean spirited as Mr Wright sound he is still worthy of prayer from the Body of Christ. We must pray for his repentance and deliverence from the hatred that is imbeded in his soul. One doesn’t need to hear the full sermon to know of what spirit he is preaching from. When preaching from the spirit of Christ the message doesn’t focus on man’s natural condition but on his spiritual condition. Mr. Wright would do better to focus his own soul on Christ and His love for mankind rather than on bringing division to mankind.
Reverend Wright has a mental problem He is obsessed with his hatred for whitey and he just doesn’t know when to quit. If things are so bad and the white man has suppressed him and his, what should he do? Leave the country.
No one is alive that had anything to do with the enslavement of your ancestors and the rest of that crazy talk is all in your mind, Rev. Why don’t you quit whining?
The Reverand, no I don’t think of him as reverand, more like the Devil himself, raving and ranting, what Wright should do is go visit Shreveport Lousians and especially (The Bottoms ) there and he will get a very clear picture of race and the filthy surroundings, I am wondering if any politican has EVER VISITED that area just to see the drunken men laying in layers on their dirt yards while their children go hungry and naked…some politicans would not dare go near there out of fear.it will make you sick as there is NO CURE for this.
The poll reveals that many people don’t believe Obama supports or accepts the views of Mr. Wright. With that understanding, if these same people consider themselves fair and balanced?
I’m curious, if a person hangs out with drug dealers would those same respondents assume the person hanging out with drug dealers are law abiding citizens….or the possibility they also do drugs or accept those who do?
I’ve spent the last 15 minutes reading the responses to Reverand Wrights sermon. It’s easy to see who is black and white. I am a black man who considers himself to be a concervative Christian. Most white people don’t understand black theology. They do not teach and preach Bible theology, that would take away 90% of their sermons. I am a member of a mostly black congregation where our black pastor has taught us the difference. He would never allow the Reverand Wright to speak in his pulpit. I use to attend a church just like the one’s who invite the Reverand Wright to speak. It’s more about civil rights than Jesus Christ and loving your neighbor as yourself. I did listen to his sermon and I did hear the hatred talked about here. Only a small minority of blacks would give his the time of day. He needs to get SAVED!
