Clinton, Michelle Obama to Appear on Comedy Show ‘Colbert Report’

PHILADELPHA — Hillary Clinton is hoping the “Colbert bump” will help propel her to victory in Pennsylvania.

The Democratic presidential candidate will make her first appearance on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” on Thursday. Both Clinton and Colbert have come to Pennsylvania ahead of the state’s hard-fought Democratic primary on April 22.

Clinton rival Barack Obama also is in Pennsylvania, but has thus far declined Colbert’s invitation. Obama’s wife, Michelle, will appear on the show Tuesday.

News of Clinton’s visit was divulged Monday night in Philadelphia by MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews. He blurted it out during taping of the show at the University of Pennsylvania’s Zellerbach Theater. The news was confirmed by a person close to the satirical news program, who insisted on anonymity because the date of the visit hadn’t been publicly announced.

Comedy shows have played a role in the presidential campaign, and good things have happened to guests on “Colbert.” Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was a regular on the show before his unexpected — but short-lived — success in pursuing the Republican nomination. And a “Saturday Night Live” sketch was credited for helping Clinton gain momentum in February.

My message is to Michelle Obama… Michelle, I am a middle-aged wife and mother from a middle-income family. Our hometown is Makanda, IL, population 400 and former home of the late Senator Paul Simon. I have not been a serious politically active individual in the past; in fact, in the past 6 presidental elections, the candidate for whom I voted lost. I am active now because basically “I am bitter”. Yes, I said “bitter”. Instead of clinging to religion or guns, I cling to “quilting”; it takes my mind off the fact I have little to no control over my own destiny. No matter how hard we work, save and strive to achieve, each year just keeps getting more difficult. My husband and my jobs do not offer health insurance. We’re too rich to receive government assistance and too poor to be able to afford the outrageously high premiums. I have one daughter in college and another going in a couple years. Again, we’re too rich for assistance and too poor to pay the evergrowing college tuitions. We want the best for our family, so we do what we have to and we struggle. We are the middle class; we are forgotten. Hillary Clinton’s mother forgot to teach her “if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all” or “some people have to put others down to make themselve feel bigger or better”. We all learned this as children, so rest assured, people are aware of what she’s doing. We can see that Barack is above this. He began speaking of change; and change includes eliminating the undermining, backstabing, and manipulative tactics that goes on in politics. So let Hillary flap her lips… In the meantime, remind your husband that the people like me, and there are a lot of us, appreciate his class and his character, and we are behind him all the way to the White House.
