RNC Calls on Networks to Halt Anti-McCain ‘100 Years’ Ad
MIAMI — The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.
The ad says President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years, then plays a clip of McCain saying, “Maybe 100. That’d be fine with me.”
The announcer then says: “If all he offers is more of the same, is John McCain the right choice for America’s future?”
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said the ad deliberately distorts what McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, said.
The committee’s chief counsel, Sean Cairncross, said he sent letters Monday to NBC, CNN and MSNBC insisting that they stop airing the commercial.
At issue is McCain’s answer, in January, to a question about Bush’s theory that troops could be in Iraq for 50 years.
McCain said: “Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, that’d be fine with me, and I hope it would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al-Qaida is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day.”
Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said “there’s nothing false” about the ad.
“We deliberately used John McCain’s words. This isn’t some ominous consultant’s voice from Washington. This is John McCain’s own words. And we’ve been very upfront about everything that he’s said.”

How can anyone be suprised? This is politics as usual, and we all know who these networks
are behind.
There is not much difference between the DNC & the RNC quoting their respective cnadidates. If Big John said it; then own up to it or explain why you said it. Either way, stop crying foul when you (RNC) do it too. H. Clinton looks better & better as the days wear on.
I’m a life long Republican - you might think I would be angry over the Democrat Ad. This election cycle is going to get very ugly. But since the N.C. GOP sees fit to run an extremely negative add against Barak Obama, and there isn’t even a contest between the GOP and DEMs - I can’t feel sorry when its “payback”. McCain says he doesn’t support the Obama ad - but has no “clout” to get it withdrawn. If he can’t do that - what about when he is in office?
Only when we have candidates and parties that are above the “gutter” will we be free of such trash.
We did it to ourselves. as Pogo the cartoon character said long ago…”I have found the enemy and it is us.”
Shame on both parties. I think its time for an honorable third party.
When all you’ve got is Obama from the “Wright” wing and Hillary, you pretty much have to start distorting or lying…or something. What a pathetic representation of the United States Democtratic Party. McCain should get a head start decorating the Oval Office…
I agree with what McCain said. I have not seen the DNC ad, but I also agree in principle with their right to use McCain’s words. I hope he overcomes this type of attack with truth and strength. Too often our leaders have backed off from a statement of truth when criticized. The truth is that we are in Irag, no matter whether we want to be or not. I see America at a critical point. America has not had the will to follow through in military engagements since WWII. If this doesn’t change soon, America will join others on the trash heap of history.
In keeping with Howard Dean’s character (or lack there of), it’s interesting to note he conveniently leaves out many of “John McCain’s own words”; enough to completely distort the meaning of what he said. I find it incredulous for Mr. Dean to say “… we’ve been very upfront about everything that he’s said” when he has purposely distorted Mr. McCain’s message by eliminating the context in which Mr. McCain spoke those words.
Taking one short statement that is totally out of context by itself and leaving out the explanation of what he is saying (when the explanation gives it a totally different meaning) is not honest or above board as Dean is trying to portray. Boy, the Democrats sure do insult the American people’s intelligence.
McCain has clearly illustrated that this would be a similar situation as we presently have in Korea, Japan and Germany. Are we in a “hundred year war” in any of those places? No. He is just pointing out the reality of a post war Iraq. But don’t let the facts stand in the way of a good opportunity to distort his position liberals, we’ve come to expect just as much (or as little) as exactly that.
He also mentioned that we had been in Germany for 60 years as well as in Japan and South Korea. The Democrats deliberately distorted McCain’s words.
Lol Howard Dean and the democrats responsible for this ad are quite ignorant. Can’t they think of something truthful to say for once?
