RNC Calls on Networks to Halt Anti-McCain ‘100 Years’ Ad
MIAMI — The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.
The ad says President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years, then plays a clip of McCain saying, “Maybe 100. That’d be fine with me.”
The announcer then says: “If all he offers is more of the same, is John McCain the right choice for America’s future?”
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said the ad deliberately distorts what McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, said.
The committee’s chief counsel, Sean Cairncross, said he sent letters Monday to NBC, CNN and MSNBC insisting that they stop airing the commercial.
At issue is McCain’s answer, in January, to a question about Bush’s theory that troops could be in Iraq for 50 years.
McCain said: “Maybe 100. As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, that’d be fine with me, and I hope it would be fine with you, if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al-Qaida is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day.”
Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said “there’s nothing false” about the ad.
“We deliberately used John McCain’s words. This isn’t some ominous consultant’s voice from Washington. This is John McCain’s own words. And we’ve been very upfront about everything that he’s said.”

Howard Dean would not know the ‘truth’ if it ran up and bit him on the leg.
He’s been lying so loudly and for so long that he’s now even devoid of the restraint born of understanding the decency and integrity of the American people.
Why is the RNC wasting it’s time? The liberal press doesn’t have the integrity to demand truth in advertising!
Yvonne missed the point completely…..try the grape flavored Kool-Aid, I hear it’s fabulous!
John McCain, at some point in time, you will realize your dealing with a DNC leader that doesn’t have credibility or the self respect to acknowledge how pathetic this ad is. If you don’t have self respect, how can you possibly respect others?
The GOP runs ads about Obama by using words said by his former pastor - words that Obama himself has repeatedly denounced. These are not words Obama has ever said - ever agreed with - or ever lived by - yet that is fine in the minds of the GOP. The Dems use McCain’s own words against him but that is unfair? Come on fellow Republicans - grow up. Two terms of Bush has not only hurt the U.S. but it has hurt the Republican party. The only Republican I could ever vote for president this time around is McCain so don’t start playing the same Rove style stupid dirty tricks that got our party in this mess in the first place. Reagan must be turning over in his grave seeing how the Republican party is destroying itself. Country before party. Reagan knew that and it would do us some good to remember that.
Dean and the democratic party should keep their mouth closed and be thought fools instead of opening their mouth and removing all doubt.
I am a “registered Democrat” and received the ad directly from the DNC via my email. My response to their propaganda follows:

Thank you for sending this to me. Please keep me on your mailing list.
Such information keeps me abreast of the latest strategies of the DNC. It is my intent to share such information with all my collegues.
This “Devastating Iraq Ad” reveals the deceptive principles of the DNC as it mauls the truth in order to dupe the uninformed populace into believing a lie.
My, My! And you have the audacity to accuse the Republicans of being “LIARS”! Someone said, “People will believe a lie if you repeat it often enough.”
My family and friends understand John McCain’s statement was not referring to the length of the war, but to the presence of U.S. occupation troops in Iraq.
Would the DNC suggest we bring our occupation forces home from Korea, Germany, Japan, the Philippines? We’ve been an occupying defense for those countries for decades.
I didn’t think so.
I invite you to keep me on your email list.
Thank you.”
Executive Director of the DNC, Tom McMahon, responded to me by repeating the lie and adding, “This is the ad the Republican National Committee is working around the clock to stop, even threatening legal action against television stations that air this spot. That’s how worried about it they are.”
This is what I hate about these LONG campaigns. Comments are taken out of context and distorted to appear as if they stand alone. It’s not just this, but comes from both sides. Maybe McCain will choose Mitt as the VP and walk away with the election!!!!
Comment by Armen Dacity is quite true, Only goes to drive home the point that Dems never do the math for themselves, its easier to have someone do it for them.
Last I checked germany, japan and korea were doing pretty well. 100 years doesn’t sound to bad.
What McCain is suggesting is nothing different than what we have done in Germany and South Korea. The United States continued to maintain a military presence in these countries long after conflict ended. McCain is not implying we will be conducting military operations in Iraq for the next hundred years. Howard Dean is either clueless or is deliberately misinterpreting McCain’s comments.
The statement was made by their candidate. He said that he would stay in Iraq a 100 years if that is what it would take. I don’t understand the double standards. He asked the GOP to not run the ad about Rev Wright, and the answer was no. Because it would be damaging in the fall if nessary. Now that the shoe is on the other foot they want a damaging ad against their candidate stopped. That’s bull!!!!!!!!!!!
