McCain Ambushed With Obscene Question at Town Hall Event
An audience member ambushed John McCain on Thursday at an otherwise placid town hall meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, with a surprise question about whether he had ever called his wife by an obscene term.
The man stood up and first said he wanted to ask the Arizona senator about a “mental health and mental health care” concern.
“Previously I had been married to a woman who was very verbally abusive to me,” the man said. He paused and asked, “Is it true that you called your wife a c***?”
The crowd booed, and McCain responded:
“No, no — you don’t wanna, you don’t wanna. You know, it’s a great thing about town hall meetings, sir,” he said. “But we really don’t — there’s people here who don’t respect that kind of language. So I’ll move onto the next questioner in the back.”
Secret Service agents escorted the man out of the building.
The question came out of a new book called “The Real McCain,” by Cliff Schecter, that alleges McCain publicly called his wife Cindy that word in 1992. The McCain campaign has called the book “trash journalism” and called the alleged incident a “complete fabrication.”
FOX News’ Mosheh Oinounou contributed to this report.
If he said it was trash journalism before, why didn’t he answer the guy’s question today with an emphatic NO.? No man should ever call his wife that word. McCain is so lucky to have Cindy McCain. He would never have gotten anywhere without her money. I hope he didn’t call her (or anyone) that.
I can’t believe what some people will do…this is ridiculous! It’s also kind of ridiculous to give the man his “15 seconds” of fame by writing about it.
Yes he did.. I was there in 1992 when he said it
Now that’s news!
God I hate McCain. Go Hillary!
Let everyone be forewrned! This is the kind of garbage that is being promoted against Senator McCain by the USA’s Number 1 public enemy, George Soros and Move on. org. So hold on to your hats, but open your wallets and send some backing to the Senator from AZ.
It will be interesting to see if the three reporters from Arizona who claimed, off the record, to have heard McCain use the c-word while snapping at his wife back in ‘92 will now come forward on the record to contradict McCain’s denial.
What a shame that the man in the audience had to disrepect Mrs. McCain like that. Sen. McCain handled the situation with class. Cindy McCain is a fine lady who will make a grand FIRST LADY.
Has anyone blamed Obama for this yet?
Let me guess everyone thinks the man was planted by the Clinton campaign. No one would ever believe that it could be an Obama surrogate or better yet he was attacking on his own accord. Great job FOX! Keep everyone away from the real issues. Do you think you’re chickens will ever come home to roost?
Sen. McCain handled the situation well. It’s an acronym that is used to describe liberals…Can’t understand normal thinking!
Is that the best that the liberal fools can do? have to go back to 1992 to get a remark like that? They truly must be despirate!
Sneaky attack to bait McCain and hope he would try to punch out the arse. But McCain is a classy guy who faced up to the North Vietnames and their brutality. He can take on these punks and always come out on top. Bravo John!
Just google it people. It Happened and he is going to pay for it when the women of the US hear about it. Are you Kidding?? The Feminist movement that is a large part of the drive behind Hillary is going to crusify him!!
Hey Fox The Aljazera of the Repuke party.
Delete this you Nazi’s
We could use a lot less of this type of behavior. There are a lot of really important issues in this race, but this is not one of them. Like my grandma used to say “if you can’t think of anything nice to say- keep your mouth shut!
So What if he called his now wife the “C” word… Who realy cares !!
This country elected a man to the Presidancy who was a draft dodger and a pot smoker Although let us not forget, He didn’t inhale.
A very cheep shot from the heckler in the crowd but something McCain needs to get use to.
If I were Sen. McCain, I might have responded this way: “Sir, You just told me that your ex-wife was the abusive one. Clearly not the case. Next question please”
It wasn’t a Mental Health question. but a mentally disturbed person crying out for help.
He acts and looks like he would say it and she looks and act like one so the likelihood that it happen it very high, not sure that it dis-qualifies him from being president though
McCain is a gentleman and the man who asked this question was being very trashy!
John McCain was and gentleman,and acted like one in response to that liberal idiot,who like a lot of others,forgets about the respect of people who don’t share his whacked out views,and wants respect but doesn’t give it.We have to start acting responsibly wheter or not you like a candidate,at least show them respect.While I am a McCain person all the way,I would never trash on Hillary,as she deserves respect as a condender.Obama is a fools fool,but even he I would leave alone,don’t argue with ignorance,ignore it.
I think a fairer question would be to ask Hillary Clinton how do we know she won’t go and do the exact same thing her husband did, having an aid giving her oral sex. That is what needs to be asked!
That was the best way to handle this situation. I am still undecided. If Hillary is nominated, I will vote for her. If Obama is nominated, I will vote for McCain. I still am of the opinion that if you have known someone for 20 years, you know where they are coming from. He sat under this minister for a long time(his spiritual mentor). He kept no surprises from Obama. he knew him well!
Sen. McCain answered the question with class; as we would expect of a leasder.
It was an obama supporter who said that….obama’s people play dirty behind the scenes and make obama look good.
This is a true statement that he did make back in 92, thats when he was married to Billary.
This comment is for Allen. If you were present at this time in 1992 why won’t you use your full name while leaving an accusatory statement like this? People like you that hide behind a cloak of anonimity when making statements you did, do not deserve to even have the opportunity to make it puplic. John McCain handled the situation with class.
Senator John McCain comported himself with class and dignity; the liberal cretin who asked him that ribald question has Milk of Magnesia for brains!
That man does not have the brains that God gave a cow. It shows what idiots the left wing liberals can be.
How Low can the Dems go?
We have already seen that by who they associate with AND what they have done. I don’t put anything past them!
These were Garbage Tactics against Sen. John McCain who is a Gentleman in every sense of the word….always has been …always shall be!
McCain always takes the High Road. He would NEVER DISRESPECT his lovely wife, Cindy.
I have my hat & I’m ready as I’m sure the Dems are in for a dirty season of slinging the worst sort of mud!
MC CAIN 08!
I’m sure that this man was an Obama supporter.
Wow. The dems must REALLY be desparate to stoop to such an absurd level.
…and that was the best they could come up with?!!?
At least we dug up some good stuff like video of Sen. Obama’s pastor acting like an insane racist!!
GOP, baby. Take notes on how we do it….
Follow the links. This clown is an Obama operative. Anyone who would take the time to have his picture taken with Biden is brain dead and should not be allowed out in public to embarass his candidate. Thank God for the Democratic Party. Without them Obama might have had a chance!
Notice how McCain didn’t answer the question.
Good for Senator McCain!!!!
What has happened to our Society. Respect is going out the window.
That man should have been wipped to a pulp. A definate PIN HEAD.
Everyone knows that McCain is a hot head. Hillary lies. Obama is connected to terrorists.
So what else is new! The only person who has no background problems would be Jesus and it looks like he may be coming back soon! The whole word is in disarray - “why can’t everyone just get along!” Maybe that is what our Creator is saying………….it’s time to “clean house” down here on earth.
We have to elect the lessor of 3 evils………….looks like Hillary wins this one!
Real cheap short at Sen. McCain. We have a real hero and leader in Sen McCain. He did well in this situation. God Bless You and thank you for your service.
This is a valid question that goes to the heart of John McCain’s character. McCain has been know to spout or spew obsceneties from time to time. But If he called his wife this name then this raises a lot of questions about him. McCain was not ambushed with this question; ambush denotes a battle or war. McCain was simply asked a question that is circulated about him. If Obama has to answer questions about people he is acquainted with then McCain should do the same. Fair and balanced is fair and balanced.
It’s obviously Obama and his cronies who continue to play dirty nasty politics by planting that guy there. Just like they planted several people to harass Chelsea Clinton about Monica Lewinsky. The Obama camp is the lowest of the low. That’s why people, after getting to know Obama, don’t like him at all.
The best responce would have been: She’s worth one hundred million dollars, what do you think?
Boy, people will do anything to cut the legs at the knees from a politician. That question was uncalled for. The person asking that question has embarassed himself, the State of Iowa and Mr. McCain. No room in an election process for such junk talk.
Not a big supporter of McCain, but I have to say he reponded like a very descent man.
JT
They were trying to get him to lose his temper, it did not work- But trust me, they will keep trying.
With his temper, who knows?????????
Unbelievable! Liberals seem to be filled with hate. I don’t understand why someone would try to do this to anyone. Hate the politics not the politician.
Someone needs their mouth washed out with soap.
Very well Done Mr. McCain!!
There is always a monkey in every crowd. The guy probably needs to get a life. Kindest Regards Joe
I am respecting McCain more and more. I agree
totally with his actions regarding the question.
I’ve been torn between Hillary and McCain. I really liked the way that McCain responded to that question. His immediate concern was not hiding anything, embarrassing his wife or his campaign. His knee jerk reaction was along the lines of you don’t want to go there, and he was talking about his respect for the men and women in that room. Men in this society who show valor and respect for women and men are far and few between. I would imagine its a catch 22 to show respect to women without being accused of being “old school” or “patronizing.” Women can be strong and still appreciate respect for being a woman. Thanks John, you did this middle aged woman’s heart some good.
It was intended to show him get angry and blow up, he handled it very well.
Perfect example of what to expect from the liberals this year.
These people who have hijacked the Democratic party have taken a perfectly good two party system and turned it into only one real choice for the rest of us. They need to go back to their Libritarian/Green/Independent parties where they belong. In the ignored outer fringes of American politics.
…God Bless America. If the general public lets the Democrat/Liberal/Progressive clowns win the White House, it will be like the nuts taking over the insane asylum. Looks like Batman is in for a real fight with these Jokers…
Just the kind of class you would expect from a Liberal isn’t it?

Yes he did.. I was there in 1992 when he said it”
sure you were - and i am a former green beret with 4 graduate degrees, a chalet in the swiss alps and a supermodel for a wife.
the one problem with the internet is the lack of accountability due to anonimity. people can say or “be” anything they want. the clown who disrespected mccain with his highly inappropriate question is an indication of how the same irresponsible attitude is seeping into society outside the internet.
i weep for the future.
Its not liberal people. Its people in general, they have no respect. I am a follower of Hillary,however, I would never ask such a repulsive thing. I have respect for each candidate as well as everyone should.
McCain did what any good person would.
Go Hill ‘08
I am so disheartened that our society has gotten to that level. When I hear comments like that I and I tell my children and grandchildren to “Just consider the source.” Apparently he or she never got their mouth washed out with soap.
It’s just like McCain to avoid answering a question he doesn’t want to answer. Do you really want this crook as our President. Come on Republicans… think for once in your life!
John you did well. Could this have been a set up by the Obama or Clinton camps?
Sure wish they had checked to see if this man was a card “carrying” Liberal. Comes Nov I will cast my vote for McCain.
This was a question meant for McCain to blow up, but he didn’t and he kept his cool. If McCain wants to win in November he can’t show any of his Irish Temper (even if its justified) because the liberals will have the ammo to paint him as an ill tempered warmonger, which in itself is absolutely ridiculous. And if McCain did call his wife that terrible word, its not nearly as bad as Bill Clinton running around having sex with numerous interns while he tells Hillary that he loves her!
I am all for free speech. But public harassment is intolerable. We should give men and woman like this no quarter. He should not be aloud to attend meeting like this if he cannot behave himself like an adult.
Even if it happend, so what? Everybody said things once in a while. Right now,we don’t have anybody better. His moved was wonderful!
H.A. NC
I think its a legitimate question. I read that he had said it and wondered if in fact he did. Goes to his temperment doncha think?? These candidates put themselves out there as a cut above most of us. Are they really??
There’s no excuse for such language in civil discourse. Have our countrymen lost all respect for gentlemanlyness and civility?
Enough is enough. I am tired of the left-wing attacks against Senator McCain. First that fictional front page story in the Treason (New York) Times about an affair with a lobbyist and now this. Senator McCain is a class act and a true American hero- and will make a great president.
I am sure Mitt Romney never called HIS wife the C word. or anything else negative.
Romney 2012
Isn’t that what all woman are? Hey he’ll get the black vote now.
Good for McCain. What a sad, sad man…to ask such a ridiculous question. Anyone who thinks the involved question was “legitimate”, in light of all the important issues facing our nation and world today, shows a great amount of ignorance.
I would not doubt that an Obama supporter did that! After all, when you read all the comments on any subject, the blacks are the most abusive and foul mouthed against Hillary and McCain! That is the only way that unintelligent blacks can respond! How come these blacks did not come out and register to vote before this….they are coming out of the woodwork….don’t even have to buy gas…they are bussed in!
Reply to MLB - Since Obama is linked to terrorists, Hillary is a lier, and McCain is a hot head, I think the lessor of three evils is McCain. I’m sure you agree but just MisSpoke.
John, Encinitas CA
I often wonder why some people seem to like to cause trouble or always take a negative view of everything. I would just love to see more respect and positive attitudes, more building up instead of tearing down. Harsh words, gossip and insinuations can only hurt in what is supposed to be our civilized world. We must learn to focus on the beauty in our system instead of the trash. Evidently some people think the only way to get noticed is to be vulgar. Thanks for giving me a chance to express my opinion.
Why does the author of this book have to be considered a Democrat and be involved with a conspiracy to ruin Mc Cain? Are we still engaging in Karl Rove politics? Could the author just be another smut peddler who is attempting to cash in on John McCain’s quick temper. I am a John McCain supporter… he is a hero from my generation. However, Karl Rove, President Bush are the people who through him under the train in his last campaign for President..not a Democrat
Getting captured by the enemy makes you a hero?
I cant believe this makes the news… its obviously a setup and giving these idiots airtime is exactly what they want.
Sounds like Mcain handled that very well.

Notice how McCain didn’t answer the question.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s because it wasn’t a question….it was a smear attack meant to provoke into showing his temper.
You would actually expect someone to validate a question like by answering it??
I’m no fan of McCain but for someone to be so partisan as to ask this in order to TRY to humiliate him
is beyond repugnant. This “my friends” is what has become of our country since Clintons became president in 1982. I wondered aloud at the time just how long it would take for them to destroy all that we have held sacred since the beginning of our Republic. As it turned out, it didn’t take long. A word to all of you liberals; oral sex is still sex, lying under oath is a crime, crass is still ugly, “anything goes” is
not a good thing, and there is still, at least with a huge silent majority, a thing called decorum.
+
The heckler at Senator McCain’s townhall meeting, appropriately had mental health issues on his mind, which he alluded to, before going “mental” himself. If someone had addressed that “question” to me, in private, I would have responded in a very, vice Presidential manner, and you know what I mean! If I were the Secret Service, I’d be taking a close look at this pinhead, from now until November. He is the very definition of the term, “boil on the backside of democracy.
Dick,
You certainly are one. And, why would think the question McCain was asked is appropriate? Probably because you use that sort of language, huh? Why don’t you ask Hillary how many times Bill has called her that name. Probably a lot more that you could count on both hands.
Even if he did call her that, so what. I’m sure most ever couple has said something to there better (or worse) half that was mean in an argument… So I say… So what?
As my grandma always said, “Believe only what you see and hear for your self” Never believe what someone else supposedly heard or read.
Go John.
How about we start thinking about the issues, instead of trash that reporters pick up. This entire campaign season, on both sides, makes me sick.
Our family rarely used bad language except when the calves all tried to get into the same milk bucket, then my father would use some words in German, I never understood at the time.
My favorite choice for Vice President would be (Mitt Romney)
…this appears to be a liberal ‘plant’, c’mon, I don’t think us conservatives or republicans could ever behave in that manner at a town hall meeting. It looks more and more that this is the normal behavior of the lib dems. So, no surprise or shock here.
Sandy, would your grandmother’s sage adice apply to Bill Clinton who, as frieda Hadley pointed out, was president for 18 years?
Sandy, would your grandmother’s sage advice apply to Bill Clinton who, as frieda Hadley pointed out, was president for 18 years?
I truly believe Senator McCain will make a great president, also a very knowledgeable person that has been quite a few places.
Gotta love the dirtball lefties. They’ll do anything to try and smear the guy. He’s probably the only honorable candidate in the race. The incident has the infantile Obama cult’s fingerprints all over it.
The man sounds like a liberal.
Absolutely pathetic that this person asked a question like that at a town hall meeting in a public setting.
Bravo Senator John McCain! You showed enormous composure, and respect for the Town Hall
audience. Was this a designed left wing question? How despicable!
To ‘Mr. Politics’
If you think that was a question that McCain should have answered, then you are as sick as the person who asked it. You libs have no class. None whatsoever. (See Hanoi Jane using the same disgusting word on morning network t.v., and Air America host Randi’s obscenity-laced rant.)
Sounds like this was an attempt to get Senator McCain to show his temper in a public format, hoping that he would lose it. It also sounds like the attempt failed. Good for McCain.
I think McCain handled it well. When politicians are in public arenas, a few nuts are bound to get in.
How many times have I heard some one call their wife’s a little CXXT without meaning any disrespect. It would be like saying my wife is just a little Shxt because she is small. I wonder if this man worn an earring in his right ear, that would make him a Liberal.
I’m not shocked if John McCain may have allegedly referred to his wife and may be other women with the C-word. Military guys use this word and others all the time without blinking. It’s part of the culture. After I left the military, it took me a while to tone down my language without realizing it was offensive to most civilians.
What’s the problem? Aren’t they all?
Get a life Folks! Even though I don’t support John McCain, I’ve certainly been exposed to worse language than that.
Questioner should have hit Bill Clinton with that one!
THE LEFT WING LOONS ARE OUT IN FORCE AND WANT A LEFT WING LOON IN OFFICE AND HAVE 2 TO CHOOSE FROM.
Is the best “attack” they can come up with??
Good grief.
Truthfully, McCain was not my first choice for a Republican candidate, but I have to say that he has handled himself with class when “they” (the liberal media, etc) have attacked him. It’s also nice to see that they don’t really have much to throw at him.
You go Johnny boy!!!!! (-:
Allen - you were “there” when he did it? Gosh, I’m convinced!
How about some details, then, if you were there. (Quick, turn to the page in the book that you read to copy off of…)
What concerns me is the fact that the police forcefully removed the guy for simply asking question….
McCain’s reaction is to be commended. His first thought was respect for everyone in the room.
In his Presidency, we have a man that has sacrificed for his country. A real man will protect his surroundings. That’s what McCain did.
I maybe can see asking David Vitter about the DC madam, but about name calling sixteen years ago. Come on! My wife and I have been married 33 happy years and I haven’t always called her sweetheart. Sounds like that person is full of hate, because things just aint going their way.
I am not surprised that a man with no class asked a question like that to draw attention to himself. Some people believe that bad attention is better than no attention.
What surprised me was that John McCain did not get angry. He was rational, respectful, even to that clod. That is about all I need to know about John McCain. He is a real hero, a real person, and sort of like the Velveteen Rabbit story we read to our children. I hope we could have someone of his caliber in office and it looks as if my hope was not in vain. John McCain’s realness comes from many years of weathering storms in his life that most of us can not even imagine.
The man who stooped so low to gain attention to himself such as the questioner in Iowa deserves no one’s respect or attention.
I think that McCain conducted himself as a true Leader! I’m glad that we have a candidate
who doesn’t have any dirt under his collar.
I have a feeling that Cindy McCain, while appearing soft spoken and demure, would knock her husbands nose to the other side of his head if he ever said something like that.
Anyone can ask stupid questions at town hall meetings…..even questions where the premise of the question is false.
