Polls Show Obama Struggling to ‘Close the Deal’

Barack Obama speaks to reporters Friday in Indianapolis, Ind. (AP Photo)

More than a week after Barack Obama vowed to “close the deal” and wrap up the Democratic presidential nomination, he finds Hillary Clinton closing the gap and polls showing Americans still questioning his relationship with his controversial former pastor.

Clinton, still numerically outmatched when it comes to delegates won, is experiencing a surge in North Carolina and Indiana, which are holding primaries Tuesday and will set the trajectory for the campaign’s final weeks.

An average of polls on RealClearPolitics.com shows Obama with a 7-point lead in North Carolina; last month he was carrying the state in some surveys by more than 20 points. And Indiana, a state that was thought to be neck-and-neck, is trending toward Clinton. Averages show her up by 6 points in the state.

Clinton was endorsed Friday by The Indianapolis Star, which circulates in the state’s competitive capital suburbs. And a new Rasmussen Poll indicated that voters weren’t accepting Obama’s moves this week to denounce his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and shed the controversy surrounding him.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled said Obama denounced Wright out of political convenience, not outrage. The poll was conducted nationally Wednesday and Thursday night.

“This primary election on Tuesday is a game-changer. This is going to make a huge difference going forward,” Clinton said Friday in Kinston, N.C. “The entire country and probably the entire world is looking to see what North Carolina decides.”

North Carolina and Indiana offer 115 and 72 delegates, respectively, representing Obama’s last one-day chance to pull away in the delegate count and leave Clinton in the dust. The six contests that will remain after Tuesday each offer fewer than 60 delegates, and individually are unlikely to have a big impact on the dynamic of the race.

Asked about his apparent rut at a press conference in Indianapolis Friday, Obama tried to find the silver lining.

“We have had a rough couple of weeks; I won’t deny that,” he said. “And what’s remarkable is that, despite that, we are seeing terrific support all across Indiana and all across North Carolina. I have been incredibly encouraged over the last several days as we have campaigned. …

“This campaign has been tight throughout. But I am very confident that the American people are looking for the kind of truth-telling and serious policy-making that is going to have an impact on their lives. And as long as I am talking about the issues that matter to them, I think we have a terrific chance,” he said.

Obama’s nearly 10-point loss in Pennsylvania on April 22 made a set of victories Tuesday all the more important for him. He would like to shake Clinton and send a signal to uncommitted superdelegates that he’s the Democrat with the mandate from voters.

Clinton needs those superdelegates to overcome Obama’s total delegate lead, which as of Friday was 1,736 to 1,602.

In the past two months, Obama has whittled Clinton’s superdelegate lead by half. Clinton holds a 20-superdelegate lead, 268 to 248.

One notable superdelegate, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Joe Andrew, switched his support from Clinton to Obama on Thursday, despite having been named to the top party job by former President Bill Clinton.

“This has got to come to an end,” Andrew said from his hometown of Indianapolis. He said he planned to call all the other superdelegates he knows and encourage them to back Obama.

Obama also got the backing Friday of former DNC Chairman Paul Kirk Jr., who said in a statement: “Senator Obama is the one candidate who has and will continue to expand the electorate beyond the traditional Democratic party base and bring young and new and independent voters to the Democratic banner in November, an essential ingredient to a Democratic victory. …

“After the attention paid to the poisonous and polarizing diatribe of recent days, Senator Obama’s clear and compelling message, which appeals to our best instincts as Americans, is more important than ever.”

Clinton’s campaign brushed off Kirk’s endorsement as “old news.”

FOX News’ Aaron Bruns and Bonney Kapp and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Obama’s top ten lists should be:
1. Wright told America I’m just a Politician. Oops…that is true.
2. I’m so eloquent…oops my writer wrote it.
3. This is my economic plan…oops I forgot to ask my advisers first and I’m waiting for Hillary’s lead.
4. Let’s stick to the actual issue..oops, Michelle and Caroline should say that at CNN..
5. Come on Hillary’s defectors and join me…oops do you think you can fool me I will defect also after I win and resurrect my loyal friends Wright, Rezco, and Ayers
6. Bitter and clinging - oops those are not in my dictionary, oops I got it from Wright.
7. Yeah, Wright mocked the Americans and I will lie by saying what he said is offensive….remember I’m a politician.
8. I’m electable…oops Hillary won the big states and has more electoral college votes to date that are crucial in November. Anyway, I fooled the superdelegates including the traitors.
9. Oops….I forgot what to say…where are my advisers.
10. Vote for Hillary…oops vote for me.

Can someone answer this question for me please? I’m really not trying to play the race card but I am sooo curious about something. The polls show Obama winning about %88 percent of the black vote and Clinton winning about %68 percent of the white vote. Doesn’t that mean Obama is winning more of the white vote than she is winning of the black vote? Again, I don’t agree with all of the racial polling going on but since the media makes such a big deal about it all the time, I want to know? How can Clinton winning only about %8 of the black vote not be an issue. And Obama only winning about %28 of the white vote be the “biggest” problem with his campaign. To me, it’s suggesting that the black vote really isn’t as important. Just curious….

These articles are sounding more and more biased as the days go by…..Obama “Struggling” to Close the deal? Clinton Was the Front runner. No One ever thought Obama would win…And Now HE is struggling and not Clinton…LETS NOT FORGET SHE IS THE ESTABLISHMENT CANDIDATE. THE ONE THAT WAS UNDOUBTEDLY GOING TO WIN. IN THE SPIRIT OF “FAIR AND BALANCED.”

Wow people are seeing right through him finally. Played the race card and did not get caught, played negative politics and put the blame on Sen Clinton, talked about hope and change as a speach with no solutions. And when he gets caught he does not know what to do. Strange that Sen Kerry and Kennedy cannot bail him out now?
People are realizing that Sen Clinton is the only one who can save this country.

Barack is an intelligent person who has taken the “high road” in this primary. It is a shame the press has sliced and diced him to let Hillary gain strength. The press has clung to Wright and milked this story and won’t let it die. This has happened while they have let Hillary slide on so many of her faults and weaknesses. I am really disappointed and sickened by the approach the press has taken in this election year. Legitimate criticism is fine, but this concerted effort to drudge up anything, exaggerate the guilt by association, is unacceptable and contemptible. It should stop now!

If the democrats follow American democratic principles, the nominee will be decided in Sep at the Democrat convention. Unfortunately, sounds like the “SUPERdelegates” will make this decision instead of the American voters. This is what the democrat party has come to. No wonder the dems threw out proven statesmen and left these two know-nothings in the running.

If HRC is so electable then why can’t she “close the deal” either?

She won PA by 9 points, less than HALF the lead she had just a couple of weeks prior. I call that losing momentum, not gaining.

BO is far closer to closing the deal than HRC will ever be. What will happen to her once some media outlet finally finds the “testicular fortitude” to report the fact that she and Bill are being sued for fraud in CA involving a 1.2 million dollar donation to her campaign?

The Clintons’ lies and scandals will never stop until they do.

Comment by gina lynn

A vote for Obama is like a vote for McCain…If you want 8 more years of a republican in the white house then by all means, vote for obama. In fact, if he is the nominee I can almost guarantee that McCain WILL be the president. None of us loyal, educated Hillary fans will vote for him. It coul dbe the only time a dem doesn’t win NY and/or California. There is no doubt in my mind he is unelectable and just because the superdelegates and the “good ole boys” of the party are threatened by a woman doesn’t mean the party wants him. By refusing to even listen to suggestions about MI and FL Dean is showing his true colors….

Comment by Joseph

For those Obama fans that continue to take the position that the superdelegates may “Steal” the nomination from Obama and that they should follow the will of the people here is a little morsel to chew on. Based on latest CNN numbers if the superdelegates that have pledged to date were to simply pledge based on who won their state, Clinton would be ahead of Obama by 59 delegates. If the states were win or take all relating to all delegates to date, Clinton would be ahead of Obama by 243 delegates even though Obana has won more states.

Comment by Ron

20 years and Obama never heard his “Pastor” spill out vile and hatred. Obama’s lead is getting smaller. Only the young and naive voting public will vote for this phoney. Closing the deal? No way, as Clinton and McCain pick up voters who don’t trust the brother and those who are close to him. The super delegates will lean away from Obama if it comes down to the convention.

Comment by Charlene

Despite what you say, Barack Obama is a brilliant man. He should not be punished for another’s comments or remarks. I am personally tired of the same old people who will be just sitting in a different chair in Washington. America needs to change and bring someone new to the table, new ideas, these old ones just played out!!!!

Comment by sharetta

I am concerned by the way the news is being reported…. when Obama was behind by 20 points leading into PA and the final results were reported as a “Blow Out” by Clinton when she won by 10points. Why wasnt the reports at that time headlines reading Obama closing the gap; or Clinton struggling to hang on to her lead? I feel the media has a responsiblity to remain neutral. Report the same or not at all.

Michelle Obama doesn’t want to talk about Rev.Wright and “move on” because it isn’t good for the children of America to hear this….Say What??? Someone please ask her why she wasn’t worried about the children in her church, including her own children, being subjected to hate-filled sermons.
Many of us won’t “move on” until we hear the Obamas’ admit they knew about those sermons. Then explain why they didn’t have the decency to leave that church a long time ago.

Hillary won all the BIG states that will be imporant in November. Obama is still wet behind the ears, has a lot of learning to do. We need Hillary in the white house. She has the ability to run our country. She is a very strong lady & has many years of experience. Obama makes bad decisions with regard to who he associates with. Those same people could be visiting the white house. America be careful who you select to run this wonderful country.

let’t quit talking about Rev Wright already. WHO CARES…………
let’s talk about the issues like health care and war and economy.
News media is so focused on the minister that that’s all that is being talked about.
I will not watch Fox news or Cnn till they start talking about issues that matter.

I am a white female over 55 and I will vote for OBAMA because I think he understands
people and how tough is to make ends meet.
Hillary is a multi-millionare how does she know how it feels to go to a grocery store and not be able to buy decent food, make house payment and buy gas.
Let’s vote for Obama and get her out of here already.

GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Democrat25

His supposed “mandate” from voters disappeared as soon as people learned about Rev. Wright and the vetting process was finally started. His viability as a candidate is gone. His supporters continue to use the numbers and delegates he accumulated prior to March as the rationale to make him the nominee. Those numbers were acquired due to lack of knowledge on the part of the voters as to his character and judgment. For the superdelegates to just ignore this new information and hand him the nomination shows extreme incompetence on their part.

Obama is the biggest liar ever, after twenty years with tis man as his minister he lied and said that this is not the Jerhimiah Wright he knows… Give me a break! This man didn’t develop these views in one week.. He only denounced Wright for political reason, if he was not running for preident he would be attending Wright church this sunday… If he losses the nomination he will be back with Wright… What else are we going to find out about Obama I will not support him any more.. I’m moving my vote to Hillary and I hope others will support her as well.

Fox New is so funny with a headline ‘can’t close the Deal’ DUH the so called RIGHT (which runs the media) are keeping issues like Rev Wright in the news. Wright is no more news worthy than HAGEE, ROBERTSON and PARSLEY.

Comment by Marie in California

Of course it was political convenience that caused Obama to finally dump the foul-mouthed Wright. Helllooooo!

Going back in time, most recently he should have done it when the jarring Wright sound bites first surfaced several weeks ago. At that time, Obama should have done what any reasonable person would do, namely, to personally investigate the validity of what was being broadcast and act according, instead of just summarily dismissing the comments as being “out of context” and so on.

And going back even further in time, Obama should long ago have been aware of where Wright was coming from. I don’t see how he could have totally missed, for that many years, what was glaringly apparent to almost everyone who listened to Wright for only a few minutes. Obama should have known all of this about twenty years ago and thrown Wright under the bus back then. Perhaps he kept him for politicaly expediency.

None of it says much for Obama’s powers of observation and his personal choices. As for me, I have absolutely no confidence at all in Obama’s character and judgment.

Comment by Joe

Obama should come out clear and tell the truth on his stand on the preachings by Rev. Wright. For 20 years Rev. Wright has been his pastor and yet nowhere it’s said that Obama did not agree to the preaching by the Rev. This means that he believed and embraced what the Rev. preached. But now that he wants the ticket to the white house he has denounced and distanced himself. Obama your change has come in to late!!. Why has it taken him this long to distance himself?. The “change we believe in” he has been talking about should have been practiced the first day Rev. Wright preached to him.

Polls Show Obama Struggling to ‘Close the Deal’.

I am sick and tired of the spinning. You have half the polls that show Obama beating McCain and another half showing Clinton or MCain betting Obama and each other. Zogbly poll today show an almost 20 point lead for Obama in NC and look at how silly your headline is.

Fox network is definately working for the republican and has been running a crusade against Obama.

I understand why people might be outrage by the comments his minister made - but the catholic church contantly says homosexual relationships are not okay and memebers of both sides of the house disagree yet still believe in the church.

Comment by BA

Bottom line is that Obama is not experienced and how can you trust him with our country when there are doubts about his patriotism, religion, allegiance and alliances? Maybe this Wright controversy is just the tip of the iceberg. what else don’t we know about Obama? How convenient for him to now distance himself from Wright. Seems like it is only a political move and not for any other reason.

Obama was sworn into the senate in 2005. He has been on the campaign trail almost a year. Is this the experienced leader the nation needs or wants? Puleeze. Those super delegates are super daffy to be backing Obama. McCain’s experience will eat him alive.

It’s the Dems race to lose and they are doing a good job of it.

I love to see the hypocrisy of all the so-called Christians who are attacking Rev. Wright. Either you believe in Christianity or you don’t. In my day you would never say a bad thing about a man of the cloth. If you didn’t like what he said, you would ignore him and go on. If you believe in such things as prophesy and inspiration, then I would be careful in attacking a man of God. You might just be one of the non-believers who will get what’s coming to him in the end.

Comment by Byron

I feel betrayed by Sen. Obama and the false hope he just talked about. Obama had a close relationship with a pastor who preached hate from the pulpit and he expects people to believe his lies? Obama lied to the American people and his false denounciation of his pastor is just a political move to keep his campaign alive. Obama is so fake and I am so turned off by his mixed messages, empty words and poor judgments. I’ll vote either for Hillary or McCain.

Comment by gastoys

I am tired of two issues.

1. If you are an Obama why do you cry when the media produces negative news about him and then you claim that there’s a conspiring against Obama. The same is true for you Hilary followers. Stop wining because the news reports on what is popular to the public and produces ratings.

2. Stop complaining that you want to hear about the issues and move on from the Rev. Wright, the Michelle Obama “I have never been more proud of my country”, and the New Black Panthers posted on Obama’s campaign web site (then later removed) issues. This is all a reflection on who Obama is and who he associates with and what he has planned for the presidency of the United States of America. Obama has not answered any of these questions, but learned from Hilary how to side step them and focus on something else. Character is everything.

I have no idea how Obama is going to beat McCain unless Hilary is his Vise President. Obama is a cult and his followers are young liberal America and our black brother and sisters. Hilary has the rest of the gang.

Comment by George

This whole fiasco is staged. Obama’s first denunciation apparently didn’t do the trick, even though Wright disappeared from the radar screen for a few weeks. The challenge was to get Obama to forcefully and fully throw the Rev. under the bus, but it would appear political if he wasn’t prevoked. Hence, the public speaking tour (with tacit approval from the campaign) the Rev. went on gave Obama the opening he needed to publicly flog and sever all association with him. Something he should have done 20 years ago. A brilliant politcal move! I can all but guarantee you that they are still buddies.

We are for the U.S of A and Clinton. If Clinton doesn’t get nominated, we vote McCain because our country comes first, not the Democratic party that has gotten so lame.

Hillary can’t “close the deal” either. The guy who lacks experience and started the campaign at a disadvantage (i.e., relatively unknown and -100 superdelegates to Hillary) has Clinton supporters jumping to his side; each has said they endorsed Obama because he runs a superior campaign based on a positive message rather than negative attacks. Hillary thought the process was going to be a coronation rather than a nomination. We’ll know soon enough.

Obama, Wright, Obama, Wright. OB’s common sense and good judgment is relavent to this election. I didn’t grow up with the guy, so I don’t really know him just like the rest of us. If OB is tinged with any of Wrights poison he’s a zero to me. Below zero. I beleive he’s tinged. I have to. 20 years is a long time to ignor. The truth is with his children. Of course it would never be appropriate- but wouldn’t it be interesting… to hear what the the values and principles they’ve grown up with are.

Hillary is Hillary. At the starting line- I was in the any1 but Hilllary camp. Now I find routing for the anti-christ vs the mangerian (sp)candidate.

Then we end up w McCain. Ugg. We need to have faith. All of us and hope that McCain does the right thing. I cannot imagine the collective intelligents of this country would want OB or HC.

“Only Malcolm X’s autobiography seemed to offer something different. His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me. The blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will. All the other stuff, the talk of blue-eyed devils and apocalypse, was incidental to that program, I decided. Religious baggage that Malcolm himself seemed to have safely abandoned toward the end of his life. And yet, even as I imagine myself following Malcolm’s call, one line in the book stayed with me. He spoke of a wish he’d once had, the wish that the white blood that ran through him, there by an act of violence, might somehow be expunged. I knew that for Malcolm, that wish would never be incidental. I knew as well that traveling down the road to self-respect, my own white blood would never recede into mere abstraction. I was left to wonder what else I would be severing, if and when I left my mother and my grandparents at some uncharted border.” Source: Dreams from My Father, by Barack Obama, p. 80 Aug 1, 1996

Joe Andrews’s statement that “this has got to come to an end,” is infuriatingly disingenuous. Apparently Andrews prefers bringing it to an end by shutting it down instead of letting the democratic election process play itself out. That smacks of such manipulation and lack of integrity that it is almost unbelievable. If that is the overall view of the DNC, they in no way represent this lifelong Democrat voter. I am digusted with the DNC’s desperate pap about how prematurely backing Obama is going to heal the party. If they believe that, they are in for a tremendous shock. And if the Democratic party isn’t more thoughtful than the illogical Joe Andrews, the presidential race in November will just be the beginning of what they stand to lose. Democratic voters WANT this nomination process to play out! And they want superdelegates to quit trying to shut it down. Following the advice of Andrew isn’t going to heal the party or win the Nov. election, either one!

The thing I find absolutely amazing is what is now happening with the superdelegates. All this time they’ve been pushing for Clinton to quit the race because Obama had the popular vote and they swore they wouldn’t go against what “the people” want. Well, now that the tide is turning and Clinton IS winning the popular vote, the decided superdelegates are trying to sway the undecided ones to still vote with Obama. What happend to what “the people” want???? You’d think they were running a racket.

TO GW It varies from state to states. some states have a higher % of blacks while states like states don’t. for instance like Pennsylvania have only like 10%. To summarize , some states their important and some states their not. Personally I think Dems are so divide its almost impossible for either one to win who would have thought. A house divide soon falls and thats were their heading.

Senator Obama is a lawyer. Senator Obama has been in court (do not know) with a case. I have been on a jury or two. I and other jury members would see during the trial lawyers on opposing sides smack, argue, shout to render their case to the jury. All the shouting and rendering to the jury would leave some to believe the opposing lawyers may hate one another yet the who thing is just a show to properly defend their client. I see the same with Senator Obama and his yanking the chain of Dr. Wright. Did he really yank the chain? Was this an event put on the public stage to convince the jury (you and I) to vote the way of Senator Obama’s client (himself)? To date the Senator has not convinced myself even though I consider him a good candidate for President. I have doubts if electiced, would President Obama place Dr. Wright with all his pitfalls in the Whitehouse Staff?

Obama and his wife are like the bad used car sales people, they smooth talk, and don’t think that voters listen when they double talk. Obama did just what his pastor said, he did what political figures do, he says what he needs to, to get to acheive his objective….so how is that a change from any other political figure? We have to talk about this guy, because he is an issue all his self. Remember this one: Its improtant to be right on day one….well with all the stuff that has dogged him these last weeks, he wont be right on day one, he would be just the same type of candidate that we have seen in past elections. He will get the nomination, because people ran out hopped on a band wagon, before they knew anything about the guy. Well he might get the nomination, but at least Hillary isn’t going to let him off easy, like so many that voted for the guy.

So hillary is at it again, trying to have obama put down. I would not be surprised if she paid some one to have Rev Wright to say all these things. The picture needs to resurface with Wright at the clinton white house. And also when hillary asked him to come and pray for her during the monica deal. How about here pastor who is supposed to be a child molester. So should this also not be brought up. Of course she has a million to pay them to shut up, and to buy the super delegates to come over to her. She might as pick Willy as vp, cause he will be running the show any way. He can live in the vp living quarters and get another string of monicas going. Is this the kind of people we want in the white house? I think not. Well I believe Obama will rise above all this and come to the top again.

I happen to be a lawyer. What impresses me the most about Barack Obama is a man regardless of his color who graduated from Harvard Law School Magnum Cum Laude. This is very high honors for those who don’t know. It is hard enough to get into the number one law school in the nation much less compete with the best law students in the United States in grade point average. Not only was Barack Obama a honors law student but he was also voted as the President of the Harvard Law Review which is quite impressive. This man Barack Obama is not a black man but an exceptional man with an exceptional mind. On the other hand, Hilliary Clinton went to Yale Law School which is rank the second best law school in the nation. There was no mention as to her achieving any exceptional efforts in her law school endeavors other than just meeting Bill Clinton and graduating. If we look at the thought processes of Hilliary with the gas tax and the mandatory forced health care, and her contradictory position in the War in Iraq, we see her judgment is not even close as Barack Obama judgment. The Reverend Wright controversy is not based on comments which came directly out of Obama’s mouth like Hilliary’s sniper fire remarks in Bosnia came directly from her mouth. So who has the better judgment and who will make the better President of the United States.

Obama can’t win in November. He won’t win against Mccain. I hope voters realize this.

Well this must be an old article, because now it looks like he has closed the deal. I think the shoe is on the other foot now, Mrs. Clinton now has failed to seal the deal. Lets move on beyond this, it’s game over, and senator Obama has a lot of work ahead. Lets move forward towards beating Senator McCain. We all in America are more then ready for a true change in government. Senator Obama is going to bring back that freshness we need to venture on into the twenty-first century. I believe we can once more be that light for the world in creating a better world not only for America, but for everyone on the planet.

It is clear that Obama can not beat McCain. All of Hillary’s voters are saying that they will NOT vote for Obama so…. maybe just maybe…many of the people voting for Obama now is only doing so…so that Hillary will not win the democratic nominee nor the Presidency and McCain will be a for sure shoe in…..

I don’t believe that someone can sit under a pastor for nearly twenty years and not hold the same views as that pastor. I would never put my children in a place where they would be under the influence of someone that I didn’t totally trust and believe that the person was going to tell them the truth as a religious leader. If you are a responsible parent you want your children influenced by someone that teaches the the way you believe. So either Obama believes the same as the reverend and trusts him with his children’s hearts and minds or he has certainly fallen short in his judgement as a parent. If he doesn’t have any better judgement than that I surely don’t want him as my president. His outrage, it seems to me, was a political tactic. Wary in Texas
