Poll: Majority of Voters Approve of Obama’s Handling of Wright
WASHINGTON — Most voters think Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has done a good job handling the controversy surrounding his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, according to a poll released Sunday.
In a CBS News/New York Times poll, 60 percent of voters — and 68 percent of Democratic primary voters — said they approved of the way Obama handled the situation.
At a press conference in Washington last Monday, Wright praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and reiterated his beliefs that that the U.S. government may have developed the AIDS virus to infect the black community and that it had invited the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Obama denounced the remarks the next day.
Three-quarters of voters polled said Wright’s statements had not changed their opinion of Obama.
And a majority of those polled — 56 percent — said the news media have spent too much time covering the controversy.
The poll was conducted among a random sample of 671 adults, including 283 Democratic primary voters, from May 1-3. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points for the whole group, plus or minus 5 percentage points for the Democrats.

I have grown so tired of the media playing “Reindeer Games” trying to discredit Barack. This man obviously has a mindset for change, and they are using every trick they can to discredit him. Its sad that a “True American”, has to endure such ridicule; when the likes of Hillary and her spotted past are not even mentioned. She is playing the same foolish political games that have caused this country to fall from the powerful state in which we once possessed. WAKE UP AMERICA, and see through the smokescreen!!!!
I am just wondering the motive of media covering the Wright controvesy for months. This is so unfair considering that the other presidential candidates have not been tailgated on ‘guilty by association like Obama” I do not think that this is fair to Obama since whatever words Wright said are his own responsibility and why should Obama become part of it.
What is wrong with the people of the USA today? I guess, they cna’t see the forset for the trees.
just proves to show how short the memory spans of obamabots let alone 20 years for you know big O
I am praying for everyone who believes that OBAMA can change anything!!!! Wake UP!!! We need someone who is experience and has no other ties with other “so called religions. I believe that CLINTON can bring this country back to life.
Hillary 08
Are they kidding? How could a small poll sample possibly be reflective of the attitudes of millions of Americans? This issues goes to the heart of Obama’s ability to stand up to criticism in a time when this nation cannot tolerate any hesitation. He’ll never get my vote.
IF AMERICA BELIVE EVERYTHING WRIGHT IS TRUE BECAUSE HE’S THE PASTOR THEN EVERYTHING HE SAY ABOUT AMERICA IS TRUE ALSO BUT IF YOU SAY HE’S NOT TELLIN THE TRUTH ABOUT AMERICA THEN YOU MUST SAY HE’S NOT TELLIN THE TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA!!
Are you kidding a sample of 671 voters .Comon
Rev. Wright is not running for President Senators Clinton and Obama are. Let the candidates stick to the issues, too much spin on Rev. Wright who is a great theologian with his own thoughts, consequently not the thoughts of Senator Obama.
water left alone will purify itself very one hundred feet. The sippi is Obama country!!
Preacher Thats a joke ! He is on a black power trip. His church should be taxed, its politics
he preaching not religon
Thank God that was a CBS/New York Times poll. At least the general public will probably have sense enough to realize that this is just more politicking by CBS and the New York Times. I live in the Philippines and don’t have a lot of contact with Americans except for my siblings and my children. However, in my family, we have several active democrats and every one of them is disgusted with Wright and thinks that Obama is just his clone. My republican sons and daughters, of course, have wished all along that Obama would be the nominee as they believe him to have even more baggage than Mrs. Clinton. Unfortunately, I think they will be disappoihnted as it appears that Hillary is going to survive this race. And fortunately, I believe that John McCain will win by a landslide no matter who the democratic nominee happens to be.
From his grandparents in his teens to Rev. Wright in his forties, Barack Obama will use who ever he needs to get where he wants. When his supporters/mentors have outlived their usefulness, he has no problem of discarding them in whatever way is necessary. Why has no one heard yet from either his sister or grandmother, his only two living relatives from his family of origin?? The man has so many hidden agendas, he scares the dickens out of me. Thanks for letting me share/vent — Lynn Hanley
I hardly ever believe polls, as I am hardly ever polled, so I don’t know who they are polling. However, if this is factual, it just proves that Obama supporters are determined to support him, even if he proves to be the devil himself. This is not encouraging to the rest of us. It is downright appalling.
I just listened to some information on Wright/Obama’s Black Liberation Theology and am seriously frightened that such a philosophy is alive in this country, let alone the world. This is not Christianity but is failed Marxism, as a real Christian black pastor pointed out. This Black Liberation Theology will be a real surprise to most of America, especially to naive white people like Tom Hanks et. al.
671 people polled, and you call that the majority of voters? You didn’t poll anyone i know.Where do you people come up with this stuff.
I think Obama handled the Wright statements just the right way. He tried to give Rev. Wright the benefit of the doubt a fews back. Wrights HUGE ego wouldn’t let this go. Good for Obama
I question the precision of this poll. If this poll actually represents the overwhelming viewpoints. Then God help us as ignorance is more prolific than I thought.
I agree, Obama has handled it with the same class as most of the attacks on him.
I completely concur with those who are tired of the media continued bombardment of the Wright issue. Let’s move on an allow both candidates to campaign on the issue that really matter to Americans. Enough is Enough already!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hopefully the Press can now move on to more substantial topics
YOU MIGHT COMPARE HIM TO PAT ROBERTSON OR THE LATE JERRY FALWELL, WHOSE COMMENTS WERE QUITE OUTRAGEOUS AT THE TIME THEY WERE SAID. I DO BELIEVE THAT THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO DERAIL THE OBAMA TRAIN WOULD USE THIS TO THE MAX AGAINST HIM, BUT MOST VOTERS TODAY CANNOT BE FOOLED ESPECIALLY AFTER THE LAST 8 YEARS OF LIES, LIES AND EVEN MORE LIES AND MISTRUTHS. I BELIEVE THAT REV. WRIGHT MAY BE SUFFERING FROM EARLY DEMENTIA, AND MAYBE HE HAS NOT ALWAYS EXPRESSED THESE VIEWS IN A MANNER THAT WOULD BE SO DESTRUCTIVE ESPECIALLY TO ONE OF HIS OWN FLOCK.I HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH SOME CHURCHES AND PREACHERS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. THEY ARE NOT PERFECT AND SOMETIMES FORGET THEY ARE NOT “GOD’
I am glad that people feel that the networks have spent way too much time on the Wright issue. It is getting so boring. What more can they say? Sunday night they repeated previous interviews and exerpts on both FOX and MSNBC. Then they repeated them again. Must be out of news and wanted to go home early.
I am also glad that over half of the people feel that Obama handled the Wright issue well. I agree with his handling of it. And because the networks have gone out of their way to keep this issue alive to keep Obama from winning in NC and IN, I hope he wins both just to show them, what they say doesn’t matter all that much.
I don’t believe that Iwould believe any poll from CBS and the New York times
that was in Obama’s favor.
THIS IS A VERY DOUBTABLE poll after seeing so many polls that differed strongly with this one.
i think he handle the case very diplomatic, thi is not about race, is leadership, i think can be a good leader, let,s give the gentleman chance. god bless him.as the us president
I find it hard to believe that people that have heard Rev. Wright (Obama’s minister) speak do not think that Obama doesn’t believe at least in part in what the minister says or he would have gotten out of that church long ago. I don’t care what Obama says if he didn’t believe what the man says he wouldn’t have stayed at that particular church. There are many black churchs in Chicago!!!!! I don’t know who they polled, but my guess would be people that just want a black president no matter what!!!!! If Obama had denouned the comments from the beginning I would find it easier to believe what he says now. To me the only reason he says what he says now is because he knows it will hurt him on voting day. Thank you!
I cannot believe the majority of Americans can overlook Obama’s connections with the Rev. Wright. If Obama can be fooled for 20 yrs sitting in a pew listening to this man and not have picked up on his anti-American, anti-white views (which I seriously doubt as to Michele Obama’s remarks about not being proud to be an American until now) then he does not deserve to be President of the U.S. who knows what remarks by IMPORTANT people he may miss!
Give me a break! This is another example of the liberal media trying to do damage control. Wright is a ball and chain around Obama’s ankle. Everyone you talk to (and I mean EVERYONE), except for rabid Obama supporters, think way less of Obama since Wright opened up his mouth.
Anyone really believe a poll run or connected with the New York Times?
Yeah, right… Coming from that bunch, it has to be true(:
Fox please. the public is tired of this.its like flogging a dead horse. please go out and look for news that is not so tiredsome pleasssssssssse. I did the poll, About approval of Obama handling the Rev. comments,Its was 58% in the positive. what this about no responses????. not going to publish it eh? not what you expect???? sad. and we are suppose to trust the news? RIGHT..
Sad, Sad, Sad. No wonder we are in such a mess. As an independent voter I was DEEPLY offended by Obama’s handling of this issue and would NEVER vote for him based on this, and other, inflamatory statements he has made.
First and Foremost, I am a McCain supporter however try to be fair when judging other candidates. I also agree that Obama handled the Rev. Wright with dignity and in a forthright manner. His comments are very convincing. I do not think the race should be judged by an affilication that one has no control over. Obama was articulate in defending himself and his family and hope this situation goes to rest and on to others issues.
I believe that this poll is totally inaccurate; I believe a lot of people feel Obama’s handling of the reemergence of Rev. Wright was just for political gain and they found Obama to not be credible. We really have to see what and how the questions were phrased to the people polled and what the demographic groups were that were polled.
take a poll i small town Pa.—everyone cares!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should change your heading from most voters to black voters. Black voters vote the black ticket no matter what the candidate has been shown to be involved in. Berry in DC, Jefferson in La. and Ray Nagin (The Chocolate City) to name a few!
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING!
I strongly agree that Obama has handled the Rev. Wright issue in good taste. So much of the media has tried to turn the tide for Obama. He has been throught a lot the past few weeks and its time that the media stop and present the issues. This certainly looks like the Clintons at work again trying to turn everyone against Obama.
I really don’t for the life of me understand American voters sometimes. Anyone who goes to this Reverend for 20 years obviously either believed or agreed with most of Reverend Wright’s position. Nobody without their right frame of mind would continue going over and over to see this guy speak. Then a week later after the Reverend makes more ridiculous comments, Obama denounces the man? Those 671 adults who were polled are fools.
The reason for these poll numbers is quite simple - though they claim to be, most Americans are not people of faith. People of faith know that someone who attended a church for 20 years would have known, and probably embraced, the derisive ideology coming from Wright’s pulpit. This is an important issue that points to Obama’s character, so to say that the media is spending too much time on the story points to Americans’ lack of character.
Obama’s pastor comments do not means Obama essence. He is the best candidate.
I am catholic and I did not change my church because few prist abused children. Those bad priest are the one who are wrong. Same happens with Obama.
How many years was this man his minister, he thought enough of him to let him marry him, and now that he is running for president he suddenly decides that his comments are extreme. I think it is very hypocritical and just an outright lie. What else has Wright said that is not on tape.
How many people approve of the way the press has handled the Wright situation? This affair reminds me of the McCarthy era when fear ruled & a person could not vindicate themselves from the vicious, loosely grounded, attacks. The press has been practicing a dangerous tactic with their relentless assault on Obama in this case, and I think they should be accountable.
Look who took the poll. Two Liberal, media firms telling you what they want you to believe. God protect us from the media and the sheeple who believe them.
I would bet that most of most of those voters are black. They would overlook anything to get him in office. If that is not the case then the rest are simply STUPID.
I think that the voters are looking at the little factors everybody has to offer. The tighter the race the more we will kno about this Handling of wright. It also includes the tax breakups and the foreign gas prices.
I feel Mr. Obama should have come out sooner rather than later with his strong denouncement of the Rev. Wright, now it appears only political.
The Clintons Pastor was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison why is this not talked about? It seems to me that this situation is not being treated fairly. This has not been anywhere. But if you google it everything comes to light. I just think things need to be fair instead of trying to destroy one person and give the other person a clean bill of health. Convicted and sentenced to three years. Lets talk about this.
If he cant handle the Wright issue any better than what he did, I don’t want him to ever be my president.
The biggest thing that bothers me is wouldn’t you think that a person wanting the most powerful job in the world should have been smart enough to realize a long time ago that this guy would be a problem for him.
I assume anyone wanting to be President of the U S has been planning it for a long time.
If this is an example of his planning ability — need I say more ?
I would not vote for Obama anyway, and I sure would not vote for him due to that un-GODly pastor.
the disturbing fact of Wrights comment is the thousands of children that hear it and believe it.no wonder so many have trouble succeeding in school and beyond.voters will make their feelings known when they vote.
In what way did Obama handle the Wright situation correctly? First he stated that he would as soon turn his back on his own grandmother than to turn his back on Wright then he turns his back on Wright. Obama cannot be TRUSTED. I cannot believe that he has the American people so manipulated! Why can we not see him for what he is….. a frustrated, two faced, maniplative man that will say anything to get anywhere. He is afterall just another politician pretending his is not……and were falling for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s no way in Hell the majority can’t think he did this because he is losing the popular vote. Come on, why didn’t he denounce this Nut the first time and only when the polls were showing that everyone was giving him and his ideas for this country a second look. Sometimes I think these polls are fake.
I wonder how Obama could have aligned himself (and his family) with a church with such misguided views…I guess in that respect I question his judgement.
I find this hard to believe. Everyone I know is switching their vote to Hillary - even me!
HILLARY 08′
How in the world do people no longer believe that the person who holds the most powerful
office on the planet does not need to be trustworthy or have outstanding character.
I guess this is what we can expect in America post Monica.
I was watching a group of students being interviewed about who is the better candidate, to handle what most of the people are not thinking about. IRAN. 50% said Mccain was best between him and obama. The other 50% said they will vote for obama in “HOPES” he can handle it.It boggles my mind how these students think that we have time for “HOPE”. Im sorry but im educated and know this country has no time for lets “HOPE”obama can, or any time to train the un-experienced.This “RACE” to the white house is not about “RACE”.Its about the dangerous issues that are overdue to be handled. We should be voting on the strongest and most experienced person to help us clean up this mess. Perhaps in 4 years well have time to sit back and say ” Lets hope”.
With so few people interviewed I don’t think this poll means much. The Wright affair has been on the minds of most of the people I talked to. The issue goes to who Obama associates with and would listen to, if he were to become President. Another thing which should be fully explored by the media is Obama’s comments concerning Clintons “obliteration” statement on Iran should they decide for a nuclear attack on Israel. The only thing the thugs in Teheran understand or respect is strength. Obama sounds like another Jimmy Carter sending mixed signals to the enemy, then wondering why they did what they said they would do. Folks I just don’t think would can afford a pseudo Carter. Obama is a threat to our national security.
Why is it not reported that the response by Obama was not liked by 40% of voters, because at this late stage in the nomination process, that is pretty significant. The other point is that only 56% of the respondants said that too much time was spent on the saga when it has been all over the news. I think the way this story is slanted is not the correct analysis of the results of the effect of Rev. Wright’s on Obama’s campaign. I think it has turned many Independents and moderate Democrates & Republicans away from Obama’s bandwagon. I am one of those that look at Obama through different eyes and I don’t think I am alone.
O’Bama may have said the right things on Tuesday, but as Rev. Wright has already pointed out, O’Bama is just saying what a politician needs to say to get elected.
It is impossible for someone to spend 20 years in an anti-American hate cult and not be affected by its teachings in some way. The comments made by O’Bama’s wife mirror that anti-American sentiment, and O’Bama himself seems to look down on people of faith.
I fear for this country if we are so willing to dismiss the significance of a presidential candidate’s involvement in a cult while turning out Mitt Romney because of his faith.
The rants of Obama’s pastor will not affect my vote for Obama. Obama cannot be held accountable for things Wright says. It is a shame that Wright CHOSE to use such awful rants with the only intention of bringing Obama down! Our country is in desperate need of change , and in need of being united again. I think Barack Obama can do this, and will do this if nominated and elected. Obama has handled the situation with Wright superbly, and should be commendedf or it. Obama ‘08!!!
THOSE 56% ARE EXACTLY RIGHT.THE NEWS MEDIA NEEDS TO GET BEYOND REV WRIGHT AS IT APPEARS HE ENJOYS ALL THE ATTENTION GIVEN TO HIM
Why should voters care? After all, what harm can listening to 20+ years of anti-American Pulpit Propaganda do? The bottom line is, American voters want a Socialist America, I say let them learn by their mistakes.
Obama is a member of the Trinity Congregation that applauds Wright’s racial and anti-American tirades. Obama as Presudent would never be allowed to be race neutral by the people demanding race based initiatives.
Wright has not changed my mind about Obama. He merely confirms what a great number of Americans have know about Mr. Obama for some time. He is an inexperienced lightweight hard leftist who certainly lacks the judgment to hold office.
On the radio this morning within 30 seconds, I once again heard how appalled Barrack is about Rev Wright’s comments and how he does not follow or care about the polls. Two lies in 30 seconds not bad, but it does not seem to matter.
Finally, get over it people. It’s a false concern.
Bammer lied - said we were all wrong about Wright. Said he couldn’t disavow him. Then said, Oh, you were right about him after all and I will throw him out of the plane. Not only is he a disengenuous liar, but he is disloyal to lifetime friends for political reasons.
He lacks the veracity and the character to run my country.
I am happy to see that the american people are more concerned about positive ways to improve our country than they are about divisive and negative people and press coverage. lets dig more into the issues.
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DESERVE NO LESS!!!
GOD BLESS
Of course! Consider who performed the Poll! CBS/New York Times: the two largest BO Supporters in the Media! Of course this has had an effect on BO, why else has he been dropping in the polls, do you really think that many people like Hillary?
That’s a lie - most people think and absolutely know that he did it for political gain - it was so obvious that he didn’t denounce this nut the first time around or the 2nd time but the third time when he saw his ratings dropping - well I got news for you Obama, your done. You are one of them.
I agree, Obama did a good job with an obviously narcissistic, resentful little man who diminished himself with his performance and his efforts to take down a presidential campaign because of petty hurt feelings. Obama soared above Mr. Wright. Time to move on.
You know it really doesn’t matter WHAT the democrats do, no one really thinks they are all that bad. As a Republican, I too am sick of the news broadcasting the same old dead story about Obama. Those who like him will do the same thing they did with the Clintons, continue to support him. The same goes true for Hillary. The Clinton past is as sorted as the rest of the politician. LETS TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES: IRAN, GAS PRICES, HEALTH CARE ETC.
The poll is a farce. I don’t think Obama supporters have any idea how much he is distrusted. Obama only has the support of the uneducated who have hate for America in their hearts.
Look, all you so called college educated people are young, wet behind the ears and have no idea of life. Grow up. Obama is just another politician that will do anything to get a vote. Raise the voting age to at least 21. For that matter, raise it to 25. Give these kids time to grow up and experience life some.
Come November, McCain will crush Obama. For that matter, he’ll crush Clinton too.
Boring– Boring– Every time I see old Rev. Wright being trotted out, I change the channel. Nothing is more tedious than old gossip rehashed and rehashed. The old gray “Fox” just ain’t what it used to be.
I’m sure I’m not going to tell you anything you have not heard already. I have always been a fan of Fox, but in watching the polical goings on, I have come to change my mind. The playing over and over again of Obama’s pastor has been an intentional hit on Obama. What happened to “Fair and Balance”. I feel the story on the sniper fire if way more important then the goings on of someone’s pastor. Hillery can not be trusted. Her stories flow out of her mouth way to easy.
Comment by concerned person - thank you! I thought I was the only one who knew that HILLAry’s pastor was in the pokey for molestation of a 7-year old….
I believe Obama’s comments supposedly denouncing Wright were only for political expediency. Obama didn’t renouce the pastor until the pastor directed comments directly against Obama. Before that, Obama apparently dismissed his pastor’s remarks as being nothing that would affect the Democratic nominating process or the general election. After his pastor’s comments were then directed against Obama, himself, Obama spoke out because ONLY THEN did he believe it politically necessary for him to do that. I think the polls are wrong and that Obama’s pastor’s remarks are likely to weigh very strongly when voters step into the voting booths - particularly if Obama makes it to the general election.
You can’t tell me that someone who sys he is an uncle, your around him fo 20 years and you don’t take on have some of the attitudes of wright obama is lying. In Wrights own words he is being a politician.
Okay, some of you are speaking of lack of experience, or questioning his judgment. His judgment voted against the war…his opponent’s judgment voted for it. His judgment (and all interviewed economists) judged against the gas tax holiday. His opponent’s judgment leads her to believe it is a great and beneficial idea…she just can’t find any economists to back her up on that…
These are merely two examples of point that experience doesn’t always equal good judgment.
Wow!!!! The way some people think…this is the same pastor that Obama’s opponent and husband called to the White House when they wanted spiritual guidance. They have their own pastor…why call on Wright??????
People see what they want to see….
While I do have some compassion for Mr Obama and the unveiling of the christian principles he apparently chose to “overlook”, this is a great heartache that America needs to really evaluate. We are trying to avoid more chaos in our country. I wish for him the best; however, he is not to be trusted as a leader.
My brother didn’t give his life for his country for someone like Mr Obama to preach to us what is wrong with this country while he himself listened to hate speeches, and defended his preacher.
What a joke……..
Oh Joyce, you are completely wrong!!
