Poll: Majority of Voters Approve of Obama’s Handling of Wright
WASHINGTON — Most voters think Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has done a good job handling the controversy surrounding his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, according to a poll released Sunday.
In a CBS News/New York Times poll, 60 percent of voters — and 68 percent of Democratic primary voters — said they approved of the way Obama handled the situation.
At a press conference in Washington last Monday, Wright praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and reiterated his beliefs that that the U.S. government may have developed the AIDS virus to infect the black community and that it had invited the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Obama denounced the remarks the next day.
Three-quarters of voters polled said Wright’s statements had not changed their opinion of Obama.
And a majority of those polled — 56 percent — said the news media have spent too much time covering the controversy.
The poll was conducted among a random sample of 671 adults, including 283 Democratic primary voters, from May 1-3. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points for the whole group, plus or minus 5 percentage points for the Democrats.

Fox please. the public is tired of this.its like flogging a dead horse. please go out and look for news that is not so tiredsome pleasssssssssse. I did the poll, About approval of Obama handling the Rev. comments,Its was 58% in the positive. what this about no responses????. not going to publish it eh? not what you expect???? sad. and we are suppose to trust the news? RIGHT..
Yeah, right… Coming from that bunch, it has to be true(:
Anyone really believe a poll run or connected with the New York Times?
Give me a break! This is another example of the liberal media trying to do damage control. Wright is a ball and chain around Obama’s ankle. Everyone you talk to (and I mean EVERYONE), except for rabid Obama supporters, think way less of Obama since Wright opened up his mouth.
I cannot believe the majority of Americans can overlook Obama’s connections with the Rev. Wright. If Obama can be fooled for 20 yrs sitting in a pew listening to this man and not have picked up on his anti-American, anti-white views (which I seriously doubt as to Michele Obama’s remarks about not being proud to be an American until now) then he does not deserve to be President of the U.S. who knows what remarks by IMPORTANT people he may miss!
I find it hard to believe that people that have heard Rev. Wright (Obama’s minister) speak do not think that Obama doesn’t believe at least in part in what the minister says or he would have gotten out of that church long ago. I don’t care what Obama says if he didn’t believe what the man says he wouldn’t have stayed at that particular church. There are many black churchs in Chicago!!!!! I don’t know who they polled, but my guess would be people that just want a black president no matter what!!!!! If Obama had denouned the comments from the beginning I would find it easier to believe what he says now. To me the only reason he says what he says now is because he knows it will hurt him on voting day. Thank you!
i think he handle the case very diplomatic, thi is not about race, is leadership, i think can be a good leader, let,s give the gentleman chance. god bless him.as the us president
I don’t believe that Iwould believe any poll from CBS and the New York times
that was in Obama’s favor.
THIS IS A VERY DOUBTABLE poll after seeing so many polls that differed strongly with this one.
I am glad that people feel that the networks have spent way too much time on the Wright issue. It is getting so boring. What more can they say? Sunday night they repeated previous interviews and exerpts on both FOX and MSNBC. Then they repeated them again. Must be out of news and wanted to go home early.
I am also glad that over half of the people feel that Obama handled the Wright issue well. I agree with his handling of it. And because the networks have gone out of their way to keep this issue alive to keep Obama from winning in NC and IN, I hope he wins both just to show them, what they say doesn’t matter all that much.
YOU MIGHT COMPARE HIM TO PAT ROBERTSON OR THE LATE JERRY FALWELL, WHOSE COMMENTS WERE QUITE OUTRAGEOUS AT THE TIME THEY WERE SAID. I DO BELIEVE THAT THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO DERAIL THE OBAMA TRAIN WOULD USE THIS TO THE MAX AGAINST HIM, BUT MOST VOTERS TODAY CANNOT BE FOOLED ESPECIALLY AFTER THE LAST 8 YEARS OF LIES, LIES AND EVEN MORE LIES AND MISTRUTHS. I BELIEVE THAT REV. WRIGHT MAY BE SUFFERING FROM EARLY DEMENTIA, AND MAYBE HE HAS NOT ALWAYS EXPRESSED THESE VIEWS IN A MANNER THAT WOULD BE SO DESTRUCTIVE ESPECIALLY TO ONE OF HIS OWN FLOCK.I HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH SOME CHURCHES AND PREACHERS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. THEY ARE NOT PERFECT AND SOMETIMES FORGET THEY ARE NOT “GOD’
