Race Key in Primaries, but Democrats Question Its Role in a McCain-Obama Election
Barack Obama never wanted his candidacy to be about race, but an extraordinary racial gap appeared to play a decisive role in his big North Carolina victory Tuesday.
According to exit polling in the Tar Heel State, Obama got 92 percent of the African-American vote — a record percentage for him in the Democratic primaries. Blacks made up a third of the state’s electorate.
Hillary Clinton’s continued advantage over Obama among white voters — who made up 62 percent of the total and voted 60 to 36 percent for her over Obama — was no match for the solid backing the Illinois senator got from blacks.
In Indiana, which has a much smaller African-American population at 15 percent, the story was much of the same. There, Obama won 92 percent of the African-American vote, and Clinton won 60 percent of white voters, who comprised 81 percent of the vote.
Exit polling indicated that race wasn’t the only factor that helped Obama narrow Clinton’s lead in Indiana and propel his win in North Carolina. He cut into her own constituencies — like lower-income voters, Catholics and those who said the economy was their most pressing issue.
The controversy surrounding Obama’s former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, weighed on the minds of some voters. In both Indiana and North Carolina, nearly half the voters said the Wright issue was important to them, and a majority of those voters went for Clinton.
Bob Beckel, Democratic strategist and FOX News contributor, said Obama took a hit because of his former pastor in the Pennsylvania primary two weeks ago, but he believes the impact has reached its peak.
“I think it’s overstated,” he said of the race issue — whether it be the Wright factor or even the racial gap.
Beckel said blacks no doubt rallied behind Obama, especially after what he called the glut of attacks on the candidate in recent weeks, but he does not think the white-black divide will affect the general election.
“They’re talking about how he doesn’t get the white, working-class voters,” said Beckel, pointing out how Clinton attracted many Democrats on the themes of the economy, criticism of the Bush White House and campaigning on heartland values.
“These people went for that message, and they aren’t going to vote for John McCain in the fall,” he said.
Despite half the voters saying the Wright issue was important to them, a majority still said that Obama “shares their values,” an indication that he can not only cross racial lines, but isn’t as alien to Democrats as his opponents had painted him out to be, Beckel added.
“If Wright was going to be an issue, then where it would have shown up is in the ’shares their values’ question,” he said.
Undecided superdelegate Muriel Offerman, of Cary, N.C., said she had wondered if the Wright controversy could have cost Obama her state and still questions what the racial divide will mean in the fall.
“This week I wasn’t sure how this was going to shake out because of the Jeremiah Wright thing and because President Clinton had been here so much,” she said in a telephone interview from her home, where she was watching coverage of Obama’s victory on television. Former President Bill Clinton visited small towns across North Carolina in support of his wife, including nine stops on the eve of the election.
“People want change and I think North Carolina is like some of the other states, that it’s just time for a change,” Offerman said. But she said Obama’s racially lopsided victory “is certainly a concern. And I think we all have our work cut out for us.”

How can you say Obama cut into Clinton’s lead in Indiana? She was leading in what a couple of polls? No they had been neck and neck for weeks. Shame on the MSM for making this look like Obama won two states. In NC where he was due to win by 20% she cut it to 14% and was outspent dramatically, and she was never due to win NC demographics were against her 110%. In Indiana they told Obama he had to win, he didn’t. And you bone heads out there are saying she should drop out? Get over yourself a squeaker or not like Obama said even a 1% victory is a victory. I’m not surprised he’s crying now.
CLINTON OUT OF MATH, MONEY AND MOMENTUM = McCain/Bush LOSE GENERAL ELECTION IN NOVEMBER!!!
There is a huge racial divide in this primary election. There is bound to be some backlash by whites against Obama in the general election.
Many Hillary supporters will not vote for Obama & it is not temporary anger. McCain will get a high percentage of Democratic voters in the fall.
Now that they claim the wright deal took a hit on Obama. Now it is high time that Hillarys minister will be in jail for child molestation. And hope it takes a hit on her. No but the News Media will never do that, cause hillary can always pay them off not too. She is the almighty and has the power, they all seem to think
Obama is all for socialist programs which will make my taxes sky rocket. Obama is for change alright. Change in that my taxes will raise to pay for his social programs.
Also Reverand Wright issue is a concern to me. I know Obama has denounced him, but after 20+ years of listening to his sermons this man’s influence does not go away overnight. I feel he denounced him only to save his presidential run.
I will be voting for McCain.
Obama will beat Mccain because the Dem party will be backing him!!. the Dem’s will be in the White house!!…. Race will play a roll, but i believe OBAMA will have “all races voting”and coming together for him vs Mccain will only have the White rich republican race behind him.
I supported Hillary from day one. Moveon.org rail roaded the Democratic nomination process and if Obama is the nominee - McCain is the next president.
It’s the blacks that gave Obama lead in NC.. 90% to Obama and 10% to Clinton??
If you were to split the black votes in same fashion, i.e., 60% to Obama instead of 90% like in NC, Clinton is the clear winner in every possible election. If you are to tally the wins by counties, Clinton has 80% over Obama’s 20%. Ofcourse, that 20% counties is where blacks are thickly populated. Does it not say something about Black community?? Shame on every Black leader out there and they are totally color blind in this race and they keep hinting that race is playing big time against Obama.. C’MON, it is utterly unfair for Clintons -they gave Blacks due respect all along.
By the way, you Fox News will be laughed at if you try to play the victory down to race again. Well then what about Clinton? She only pulled in 9% margin victory in PA where nearly everybody is white. If we follow your logic, shouldn’t she have won that state by may be 20-20% margin?
Stop this type of no-brainer issues. Of course race helped Obama just like it helped Clinton in Ohio, PA, New Hampshire and now Indiana. If it didn’t, she would have been forced out long ago. And the reason why whites loving Fox News is cheering for her is also because of her race. If there is anybody who benefits well from her/his race, it’s Clinton. It is a double edged sword. It works both way, if you understand what I mean.
Now, people call for Hillary Clinton to drop out. She has been nothing but a shameless distraction. Get her out of the race now and let the real contest begin between two great men.
