Ellen DeGeneres Squares Off With McCain On Gay Marriage
WASHINGTON — Republican John McCain says same-sex couples should be allowed to enter into legal agreements for insurance and other purposes, but he opposes gay marriage and believes in “the unique status of marriage between a man and a woman.”
“And I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue,” the likely Republican presidential nominee said in an interview to air Thursday on “The Ellen DeGeneres show.”
McCain, who also opposes an amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex unions, said people should be encouraged to enter into legal agreements, particularly for insurance and other areas where decisions need to be made.
DeGeneres needled McCain on the issue, arguing that she and the senator from Arizona aren’t different.
Last week, after the California Supreme Court cleared the way for gay marriage in that state, DeGeneres announced on her program her engagement to longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi.
“We are all the same people, all of us. You’re no different than I am. Our love is the same,” she said. “When someone says, ‘You can have a contract, and you’ll still have insurance, and you’ll get all that,’ it sounds to me like saying, ‘Well, you can sit there, you just can’t sit there.’
“It feels like we are not, you know, we aren’t owed the same things and the same wording,” DeGeneres said.
McCain said he’s heard her “articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion. We just have a disagreement. And I, along with many, many others, wish you every happiness.”
DeGeneres steered the conversation back toward the humor she’s known for.
“So, you’ll walk me down the aisle? Is that what you’re saying?” she asked.
“Touche,” McCain said.

How did I know that you were too afraid to list my original post!!! No guts, huh? or is it that you are afraid of retaliation regarding “Instead of saying OMG, how about using Oh My Buddah, or Oh my Allah, etc. Chicken, chicken………Way too afraid of the Taliban.
ellen, so i guess it’s ok for women who want to marry their dogs (canines, not ugly guys), lol…
The word marriage comes from the latin word for “joining of households”. It originally was a business venture between the heads of two houses, who would pair their children with the children of another house/band/tribe/village in order to gain economically and in status. Therefore, to use the word literally, it isnt a religious term, it is a communal one. Thus, the argument over the word used to describe any loved ones union is moot. If the religious community is allowed to refashion the noun for the purpose of describing the holy matrimony between man and woman, why shouldn’t contemporary standards of union be able to describe the religious, nonreligious, hetero and gay unions of today by applying the word ‘marriage’? People are arguing over semantics here. I respect a persons religious affiliation and the interpretations they gather from their holy scriptures, but disagree with the semantics over the word ‘marriage’.
Man, as a Christian, I am truly disappointed in some of the responses on this site. Some of you false Christians really need to take a look in the mirror (and, aparently, another look at Jesus’ teachings…) God gives each of us a free will… What gives another person (or a Government) the right to impede on that?
To make abortion illegal is wrong, because, in some cases it’s necessary (the woman’s health is at risk/rape has occured) It’s the woman’s choice… I believe we should do all we can to make it the LAST option…. We should provide the best alternatives, counselling, education we can… but, abortions ARE going to take place…. Better by a Doctor than in some back alley, with a clothes hanger…
By the same token, what right do those of us that are straight have to block gay people from being happy… Is a monogamous gay person somehow worse than a straight person who sleeps around? I think not…
To the guy who says “God never changes…” you may want to go back and re-examine the Bible’s description of God pre and POST the New Covenant that God put into place through Jesus’ sacrifice…
No wonder people have a bad view of Christians… You phoneys talk to loud and run your mouths too much…
Live & let live…. worry about the logs in your OWN eyes before you try to pluck the splinter from someone elses…
All people have bad or hurtful thoughts .For many people the word of God is the standard used to measure ones behavior. People are measured by what they do not by what they say.Marriage is holy in the sight of God given to a man and a women. In the old days it was never even thought of as having to define MARRIAGE .Thats probably why it feels like an attack. Honestly I dont know of any religion in the world that approves of Gay anything sorry you guys but these convictions are held deeply by people all over the world trying to do the right thing .The country was founded by people with deeply held convictions about God. Right & wrong, moral & immoral. In our way of thinking its not just allowing but approving of protections under the law for gays is moral. Everyone should have this typ of protection under the law. But not with the word marriage in it. Sorry but you gays can call it what you would like it to be but it will never ever be considered marriage ever. And one other thing the gays should lose Rosie she is just flat MEAN spirited.
Why is it that people who are independent thinkers can justify anything under the sun including gay marriage as though it is co equal to normal marriages. They claim to be a part of any religious denomination but they throw “judge not, lest you be judge” verse which is taken out of context. The verse states do not condemn people to hell are you be be condemned to hell. Gotta read the word and live it out. But now we are intolerant who disagree with the homosexual lifestyle. leave to those who are guided by emotions and not principles to set the premise of the debate.
In the US we have Separation of Church and State! I agree that churches have the right to sanction or not sanction Gay Marriage, but the in the eyes of the US Constitution we are all supposed to have the same rights! Therefore the government has an obligation to make sure all of our rights are upheld not just religious people!
The bigger issue here is that 4 justices felt that they know better than the millions of Californians that have already voiced their opinion on the subject. 61% of voting Californians stated that they wanted the definition of marriage to be between a man and a woman.
When the judicial branch decides to over rule the will of the people, contempt for government can’t be far behind…
How does anyone marrying someone have an affect on a straight couple marrying? Since most religions are based on guilt and making one feel bad for everything they do I can see why some are against it. Luckily Einstein was right, the bible was written over silly superstitions. A gay couple marrying has nothing to do with belittling a straight couple marrying. It has no affect on anyone else’s life.
WOW, I had no idea our nation was filled with so much HATE. I am ashamed to read most of these comments. What is wrong with you people?
